Defining Ewing and Ewing-like small round cell tumors (SRCT): the need for molecular techniques in their categorization and differential diagnosis. A study of 200 cases
Differentiation of Ewing sarcoma family of tumors (ESFT) and Ewing-like tumors remains problematic. Certain ESFT with morphological and immunohistochemical (IHC) profiles lack the EWSR1-ETS transcript. To improve diagnostic accuracy we investigated the presence of several specific transcripts in 200 small round cell tumors (SRCT) displaying ESFT morphology and immunophenotype in which EWSR1 FISH analysis was non-informative or negative. Myoepithelial differentiation in cribriform, tubular and solid pattern of adenoid cystic carcinoma: a potential involvement in histological grading and prognosis
Adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC) is known as a biphasic tumor composed of ductal and myoepithelial cells. The present study aimed to evaluate the amount and distribution of the myoepithelial cells in cribriform, tubular and solid subtypes of AdCC and analyze their relationship with histological grading and prognosis. A panel of myoepithelial markers including CK5/6, p63, p40, D2-40, calponin, α-SMA, S-100, and vimentin, together with a luminal cell marker CK7, and Ki-67 were used for immunohistochemical study in 109 AdCCs that included 38 cribriform, 36 tubular and 35 solid subtypes. Cytokeratin 5/6 and P63 immunophenotype of thyroid lymphoepithelial complexes
Thyroid lymphoepithelial complexes (LECos) are rare, being reported in lymphoma, Graves-Basedow disease, Hashimoto thyroiditis, pericarcinomatous thyroid or in the context of branchial cleft-like cysts. Here we report immunohistochemical expression of cytokeratin 5/6, P63 and TTF1 in 6 cases of thyroid LECos.Two cases had carbimazole treatment for hyperthyroidia and Graves disease. Anti-thyroglobulin,-thyroperoxidase or -TSH antibodies were detected in 4 cases. NSAID or poviodone iodine allergy were present in 2 cases. (Source: Annals of Diagnostic Pathology)

Malakoplakia associated with prostatic adenocarcinoma
We describe the clinical features and the associated pathology in 4 patients who demonstrated malakoplakia of the prostate in association with prostatic adenocarcinoma. Prostatic malakoplakia presenting in association with prostatic adenocarcinoma was identified in 4 patients through a search from the records of 3 institutional databases with large in-house and consult uropathology practices. Histopathological review of 667 cases of oral mucoceles with emphasis on uncommon histopathological variations
In this study, we aimed to histologically reevaluate cases of oral mucoceles to identify possible variants. A total of 667 slides containing tissue sections stained with hematoxylin and eosin diagnosed as a phenomenon of mucus extravasation were analyzed under light microscopy by 4 previously trained examiners. Prognostic Implications of Epithelial to Mesenchymal Transition Related Proteins (E-cadherin, Snail) and Hypoxia Inducible Factor 1α in Endometroid Endometrial Carcinoma
The epithelial-mesenchymal-transition (EMT) is an important step in the invasion and metastasis of cancer. E-cadherin downregulation, which is essentially controlled by EMT mediated proteins such as Snail, is a main molecular feature of this process. Tumor hypoxia is one of the essential biological phenomena that are associated with the development and progression of various solid tumors. Recently, hypoxia and hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF-1α) signaling pathway are identified to have an essential role in the regulation of EMT phenotype. (Source: Annals of Diagnostic Pathology)

Comparison of margin status and lesional size between radioactive seed localized vs conventional wire localized breast lumpectomy specimens
Despite the known benefits of the use of radioactive seed localization (RSL), few studies have looked at the resultant pathologic marginal status of these lumpectomy specimens, especially in regard to different definitions of close/positive margins. We compared the marginal status of lumpectomy specimens removed by either RSL or conventional wire localization (CWL) techniques. A total of 106 lumpectomy specimens including 62 by CWL and 44 by RSL for invasive ductal and lobular carcinomas were compared. (Source: Annals of Diagnostic Pathology)

Preleukemic phase of chronic myelogenous leukemia: morphologic and immunohistochemical characterization of 7 cases
Patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) present typically with an elevated white blood cell count (WBC) and cytogenetic or molecular genetic evidence of t(9;22)/BCR-ABL1 fusion gene. Rarely, CML patients may present with a normal or mildly elevated WBC and are asymptomatic, and we describe 7 patients in this study. The WBC in these patients ranged from 3.6 to 14.3 K/mm3 with 50% to 73% granulocytes and 0% blasts. In all patients, t(9;22)(q34;q11.2) was detected by conventional cytogenetics, and BCR-ABL1 fusion was shown, supporting the diagnosis of preleukemic CML (pre-CML). Pre-leukemic Phase of Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia: Morphologic, and Immunohistochemical Characterization of Seven Cases
Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) is a myeloproliferative neoplasm that originates from a pluripotent bone marrow stem cell. The small derivative of chromosome 22, known as the Philadelphia chromosome (Ph), is generated by the t(9;22)(q34;q11.2) and produces a BCR-ABL1 fusion gene. This abnormality is disease-defining for CML in the context of a myeloproliferative neoplasm [1]. (See Figs. 1– 3.) (See Tables 1–3.) (Source: Annals of Diagnostic Pathology)

Osteoclast-rich, proximal-type epithelioid sarcoma: clinicopathologic features of 3 unusual cases expanding the histomorphological spectrum
Epithelioid sarcoma (ES) displays a wide clinicopathologic spectrum. On histopathology, osteoclast-like giant cells have been rarely described in these tumors. A 45-year-old gentleman presented with a perineal swelling of 6-month duration. Radiologic imaging disclosed a large, highly vascular tumor mass in his perineal region that was diagnosed elsewhere as pigmented villonodular synovitis. A 58-year-old lady presented with a recurrent tumor in her right inguinolabial region for which she underwent multiple tumor resections in the past. (Source: Annals of Diagnostic Pathology)

Clear cell papillary renal cell carcinoma, renal angiomyoadenomatous tumor, and renal cell carcinoma with leiomyomatous stroma relationship of 3 types of renal tumors: a review
Discussions about possible relationship of both tumors were published since their description. The main differential diagnostic feature was considered presence/absence of fibroleiomyomatous stroma-relationship of renal angiomyoadenomatous tumor in stroma-rich tumors. However, it was shown that stroma is reactive and nonneoplastic by its nature and that all other histologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular-genetic features of both entities are identical.
