HPV Vaccines: their pathology-based discovery, benefits, and adverse effects
The discovery of the HPV vaccine illustrates the power of in situ based pathologic analysis in better understanding and curing diseases. The two available HPV vaccines have markedly reduced the incidence of CINs, genital warts, and cervical cancer throughout the world. Concerns about HPV vaccine safety have led some physicians, healthcare officials, and parents to refuse providing the recommended vaccination to the target population. Aims: discuss the discovery of HPV vaccine; review scientific data related to measurable outcomes from the use of HPV vaccines. (Source: Annals of Diagnostic Pathology)

Microvessel density and Ki-67 labeling index in esthesioneuroblastoma: is there a prognostic role?
Esthesioneuroblastoma (ENB) is a malignant neuroectodermal tumor. Hyams grading has an established role in its prognostication. The importance of microvessel density (MVD) and Ki-67 labeling index (Ki-67 LI) is well studied in various tumors, but the same remains understated in ENB. The aims of the study were to estimate proliferation index and MVD in ENB and to correlate them with Hyams grade. Twenty-six ENB cases diagnosed over a period of 5 years were included. Hyams grade, MVD, and Ki-67 LI were evaluated for each of them. (Source: Annals of Diagnostic Pathology)

A quality initiative of postoperative radiographic imaging performed on mastectomy specimens to reduce histology cost and pathology report turnaround time
Breast pathology relies on gross dissection for accurate diagnostic work, but challenges can necessitate submission of high tissue volumes resulting in excess labor, laboratory costs, and delays. To address these issues, a quality initiative was created through implementation of the Faxitron PathVision specimen radiography system as part of the breast gross dissection protocol; this report documents its impact on workflow and clinical care. Retrospective data from 459 patients who underwent simple or modified radical mastectomy at our institution between May 2012 and December 2014 were collected. (Source: Annals of Diagnostic Pathology)

Distinct patterns of peritumoral histological findings in subtypes of intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms of the pancreas
Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs) of the pancreas are primary pancreatic neoplasms that can act as precursors to invasive adenocarcinoma of the pancreas. The peritumoral stroma has been increasingly recognized to play an important role in many types of tumors. Therefore, to investigate the clinicopathological significance of the peritumoral stroma in IPMNs, we examined the histological features of the peritumoral stroma in each subtype and histological grade of IPMNs. Eighty-two patients with IPMN, who underwent surgical resection, were reviewed clinicopathologically. (Source: Annals of Diagnostic Pathology)

Clinicopathological spectrum of a series of merkel cell carcinomas diagnosed at a tertiary cancer referral centre in India, with current concepts
Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare, clinically aggressive primary cutaneous neuroendocrine carcinoma. The present series describes clinicopathological features of 16 MCCs diagnosed at a tertiary cancer referral centre. Sixteen MCCs occurred in 10 males and 6 females (M: F=1.6:1), between the ages 37 and 74 years (mean, 58.3, median, 58.6), commonly in lower extremities (7) (43.7%) and head and neck sites (5) (31.2%), followed by upper extremities (3) (18.7%) and abdominal wall (1). Tumor size varied from 0.5-9.9cm. (Source: Annals of Diagnostic Pathology)

Aberrant expressions of c-KIT and DOG-1 in mucinous and nonmucinous colorectal carcinomas and relation to clinicopathologic features and prognosis
This study aims to investigate expressions of c-KIT and DOG-1 in colorectal mucinous carcinoma and nonmucinous carcinoma using manual tissue microarray technique. In this work, we studied tumor tissue specimens from 150 patients with colorectal mucinous (MA) and nonmucinous adenocarcinoma (NMA). High-density manual tissue microarrays were constructed using modified mechanical pencil tip technique, and immunohistochemistry for c-KIT and DOG-1 was done. (Source: Annals of Diagnostic Pathology)

Frozen Section: Guiding the Hands of Surgeons?
Frozen section (FS) analysis is a powerful tool that can provide a rapid diagnosis, directing operative management. However, frozen sections (FSs) can also be misused. We consider a FS to be “inappropriate” when it does not influence operative management or immediate patient care. Not only can inappropriate FSs compromise diagnostic material, they can impact turn-around-time of other FSs. We evaluated the utilization of FSs at our institution and assessed influence on intraoperative management. (Source: Annals of Diagnostic Pathology)

Thoracic endometriosis: clinicopathologic updates and issues about 18 cases from a tertiary referring center
Thoracic endometriosis is defined as the ectopic presence of endometrial glands and stroma in lung or pleura and constitutes an uncommon cause of spontaneous pneumothorax in nonsmoker women in childbearing age. From 2000 to 2014, 18 women out of 246 (7.3%) had a histologically proven endometriosis-related pneumothorax. The examination of thoracic samples was performed on formalin fixed paraffin embedded hematoxylin&eosin stained slides. Immunohistochemistry was carried out on all samples. The pathologic findings included endometriosis foci appearing as a triad of endometrial glands, stroma and hemosiderin laden macrophages...

Urothelial Carcinoma with shadow cell, lipid cell and sebaceous (skin adnexal) differentiation: Clinicopathological and immunohistochemical study of 10 cases
We discuss the histological and immunohistochemical features of 6 cases of urothelial carcinomas of lipid cell variant and 4 cases with shadow cell differentiation, one of which showed additionally sebaceous differentiation, one of which shows additional sebaceous differentiation, from our archive cases from the last 15 years. Conventional urothelial carcinoma (UC) was seen in all lipid cell variant cases, and micropapillary carcinoma was seen in 3. The ratio of the lipid cell component was between 10% and 40% in these 6 cases. (Source: Annals of Diagnostic Pathology)
