Primary cutaneous natural killer/T-cell lymphoma of the nasal type: a report of 4 cases in North American patients
The “nasal” type of primary cutaneous lymphoma with natural killer/T-cell differentiation is rarely encountered outside Asia. The authors herein document 4 cases in White, North American individuals between the ages of 39 and 73 years. Their skin lesions were located on the legs in 2 cases, and they were multifocal in the other 2 patients. Microscopically, each neoplasm manifested as a dense infiltrate of cytologically aberrant lymphocytes in the dermis and subcutis. The lesional cells were angiocentric, with associated infarctive-type necrosis of the surrounding tissue. (Source: Annals of Diagnostic Pathology)

Primary cutaneous NK/T-cell lymphoma of the nasal type: a report of 4 cases in north american patients
The “nasal” type of primary cutaneous lymphoma with NK/T-cell differentiation is rarely encountered outside of Asia. The authors herein document 4 cases in Caucasian, North American individuals between the ages of 39 and 73 yrs. Their skin lesions were located on the legs in 2 cases, and they were multifocal in the other 2 patients. Microscopically, each neoplasm manifested as a dense infiltrate of cytologically-aberrant lymphocytes in the dermis and subcutis. The lesional cells were angiocentric, with associated infarctive-type necrosis of the surrounding tissue. (Source: Annals of Diagnostic Pathology)

Claudin 3, 4, and 15 expression in solid tumors of Lung Adenocarcinoma versus Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma
Epithelioid malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) can easily be confused with lung adenocarcinomas (ACA). In serous effusion, claudin (cldn) 3 is shown to be useful in the diagnosis of mesothelioma versus adenocarcinomas. Cldn15 is reported to be overexpressed in epithelioid mesothelioma and absent in human airway epithelium. (Source: Annals of Diagnostic Pathology)

Gene protein detection platform—a comparison of a new human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 assay with conventional immunohistochemistry and fluorescence in situ hybridization platforms
Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) immunohistochemistry (IHC) and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) are widely used semiquantitative assays for selecting breast cancer patients for HER2 antibody therapy. However, both techniques have been shown to have disadvantages. Our aim was to test a recent automated technique of combined IHC and brightfield dual in situ hybridization—gene protein detection platform (GPDP)—in breast cancer HER2 protein, gene, and chromosome 17 centromere status evaluations, comparing the results in accordance to the American Society of Clinical Oncology/College of American Pat...

Pattern of SMARCB1 (INI1) and SMARCA4 (BRG1) in poorly differentiated endometrioid adenocarcinoma of the uterus: analysis of a series with emphasis on a novel SMARCA4-deficient dedifferentiated rhabdoid variant
The role of the switch/sucrose nonfermenting chromatin remodeling complex in the initiation and progression of cancer is emerging. In the female genital tract, only ovarian small cell carcinoma, hypercalcemic type harbors recurrent inactivating SMARCA4 mutations. Otherwise, only rare case reports documented SMARCB1 involvement in endometrial cancer. We analyzed 24 grade 3 uterine endometrioid adenocarcinomas and 2 undifferentiated carcinomas for immunohistochemical expression of SMARCB1 and SMARCA4. (Source: Annals of Diagnostic Pathology)

Follicular helper T-cell lymphoma: a B-cell–rich variant of T-cell lymphoma
Follicular helper T-cell lymphoma is a recently described variant of T-cell lymphoma sharing the cell of origin with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma and with primary cutaneous CD4-positive small/medium T-cell lymphoma. To better characterize the morphologic and immunophenotypic features of follicular helper T-cell lymphoma, a series of 4 confidently diagnosed cases are analyzed. The overall morphologic pattern significantly overlaps with that of progressive transformation of germinal centers in 3 cases and with follicular hyperplasia in 1. Achaete-scute homolog 1 expression closely correlates with endocrine phenotype and degree of differentiation in sinonasal neuroendocrine tumors
Primary sinonasal tumors with neuroendocrine differentiation (STNDs) are uncommon, with overlapping histology. According to the amount of neuroendocrine component, they can be subcategorized into esthesioneuroblastoma, high-grade sinonasal neuroendocrine carcinoma/small cell carcinoma, and sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma. Achaete-scute homolog 1 (ASH1) is a master gene for neuroendocrine differentiation and is expressed in fetal and adult neuroendocrine tissues. Expression of ASH1 protein may be a useful marker for cancers with neuroendocrine features. (Source: Annals of Diagnostic Pathology)

Nodular fasciitis: a retrospective study of 272 cases from China with clinicopathologic and radiologic correlation
Our aim is to describe the largest series of nodular fasciitis (NF) with emphasis on the clinicopathologic and radiologic correlation. A total of 272 cases of NF were diagnosed between 2004 and 2014 at our institution. There were 160 males and 112 females with age ranging from newborn to 77 years (mean, 36 years). The upper extremity was the most common location (34%), followed by the head and neck region (24%), trunk (21%), and lower extremity (14%). By radiology, the lesion appeared as well-defined homogeneous mass with low or isodensity on computed tomography, homogenous hypointense or isointense on T1-weighted sequence...

High-grade myxoinflammatory fibroblastic sarcoma: a report of 23 cases
We describe 23 cases of high-grade myxoinflammatory fibroblastic sarcoma (MIFS). The patients were 15 women and 8 men, with the age ranging at the time of diagnosis from 39 to 93 years (mean, 64.3 years; median, 66 years). Follow-up was available for 18 patients, of whom 9 developed metastatic disease; 7 of these died. Most tumors showed a predilection for the soft tissues of the extremities, with 14 cases involving the lower limb and 5 the upper extremity. However, in both sites, the acral parts were affected in only 1 case each. (Source: Annals of Diagnostic Pathology)

Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Immunoexpression is Increased in Malignant Salivary Gland Tumors
Salivary gland tumors (SGTs) consist of a heterogeneous group of lesions accounting for 3% to 10% of all head and neck neoplasms. Little is known about their angiogenic properties and despite vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) has been previously studied in these lesions, further investigations are warranted to better determine its clinical and prognostic significance. In the current study a total of 132 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded SGTs were organized in tissue microarray blocks and submitted to immunohistochemistry against VEGF protein. Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma of minor salivary glands with major epithelial-myoepithelial component: clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical study of 3 cases
In the present study, 3 cases of very rare intraoral carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenomas showing a striking differentiation of the malignant component towards epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma were described. The tumors occurred in two men and one woman with median age of 56 years. Involved sites included palate and buccal mucosa. Two patients experienced local recurrences, of which one died of disease complications. In all cases, residual pleomorphic adenoma was present. The malignant component in all cases shared morphological aspects with epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma. (Source: Annals of Diagnostic Pathology)
