Gnathic and peripheral ameloblastomas lack human papillomavirus DNA
Human papillomavirus (HPV) has been associated with a variety of head and neck neoplasms, including squamous cell carcinomas and Schneiderian papillomas. Ameloblastomas can arise from either the gnathic bones or peripheral soft tissues. Peripheral sinonasal ameloblastomas share clinical features with Schneiderian papillomas. A small number of reports have described detection of HPV DNA within ameloblastomas. However, the majority of these cases was reported in the 1990s, used the PCR technique, and only examined gnathic tumors. (Source: Annals of Diagnostic Pathology)

Promoter Mutations in Glandular Lesions of the Urinary Bladder
Glandular lesions of the urinary bladder include a broad spectrum of entities ranging from completely benign to primary and secondary malignancies. The accurate diagnosis of these lesions is both important and challenging. Recently, studies suggest that TERT promoter mutations could be a biomarker for urothelial carcinoma (UC). We hypothesized that these mutations can distinguish UC with glandular differentiation from nephrogenic adenoma, primary adenocarcinoma of the urinary bladder (PAUB) or secondary malignancies. PEComa: morphology and genetics of a complex tumor family
Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors or PEComas are mesenchymal neoplasms composed of histologically and immunohistochemically distinctive epithelioid or spindle cells, which are immunoreactive for both smooth muscle and melanocytic markers. The cells in PEComas are typically arranged around blood vessels and appear to form the vessel wall, often infiltrating the smooth muscle of small to medium-sized vessels. Periluminal cells are usually epithelioid, and the more peripheral cells spindle-shaped. (Source: Annals of Diagnostic Pathology)

Recommendations for gross examination and sampling of surgical specimens of the spleen
This review examines handling and processing of spleen biopsies and splenectomy specimens with the aim of providing the pathologist with guidance in optimizing examination and diagnosis of splenic disorders. It also offers recommendations as to relevant reporting factors in gross examination which may guide diagnostic work up. The role of splenic needle biopsies is discussed. The International Spleen Consortium (ISC) is a group dedicated to promoting education and research on the anatomy, physiology and pathology of the spleen. (Source: Annals of Diagnostic Pathology)

Liver pathology in severe multidrug resistant 3 protein deficiency: a series of 10 pediatric cases
Multidrug resistance protein 3 (MDR3) is a hepatocyte canalicular membrane protein encoded by the ABCB4/MDR3 gene located on chromosome 7. Several liver diseases are known to be associated with MDR3 deficiency. The basic defect is reduced secretion of biliary phospholipid causing disturbance in the primary bile composition, leading to injury to biliary epithelium inducing cell death and inflammation. Severe MDR3 deficiency typically presents during the first year of life or early childhood, often progressing to chronic liver disease with cirrhosis and portal hypertension, requiring liver transplantation. SMARCA4-deficient Undifferentiated Carcinoma of the Ovary (Small Cell Carcinoma, Hypercalcemic Type): Clinicopathologic and Immunohistochemical Study of Three Cases
Small cell carcinoma of the ovary, hypercalcemic type (SCCOHT) is a very rare aggressive neoplasm of unknown histogenesis, affecting mainly girls and young women. Recently, inactivating mutations in SMARCA4 (BRG1), a member of the SWI/SNF chromatin remodelling complex, have been identified as driver events in the majority of cases. We herein describe three cases in 34, 34 and 37 years old women. Symptoms were mainly abdominal pain and mass. One patient was normocalcemic and the other two had no preoperative serum calcium values available. (Source: Annals of Diagnostic Pathology)

Pseudohyperplastic prostate carcinoma: histologic patterns and differential diagnosis
The similarity between some carcinomas and many benign glandular proliferations has been mentioned in the literature for decades. The description of the main histologic features of pseudohyperplastic carcinoma has been very useful in avoiding errors of interpretation, particularly false-negative results. In recent years, we have found some histologic variants of this neoplasm that have not been mentioned previously. In order to classify the different histologic growth patterns and comment on their differential diagnosis, we reviewed the architectural and cytologic features of 34 cases of pseudohyperplastic adenocarcinoma i...

The Value of SATB2 in the Differential Diagnosis of Intestinal-Type Mucinous Tumors of the Ovary: Primary versus Metastatic
Mucinous ovarian neoplasms are a challenge for pathologists in daily practice. When mostly well-differentiated neoplasms are observed, the possibility of a metastatic tumor is frequently overlooked. An example of this dilemma is the work of Zaino et al. [1], in which 70% of the cases that were initially diagnosed as primary tumors could be re-classified as metastatic mucinous carcinomas with extra-ovarian disease. (See Figs. 1 and 2.) (See Table 1.)
