Adverse tissue reactions after total hip arthroplasty
Hip arthroplasty is commonly performed on patients with debilitating hip disease to relieve symptoms and improve quality of life. Generally, long-term success rates are excellent. However, a subset of patients requires revision due to prosthesis failure. A wide array of microscopic findings can be seen in surrounding tissues and many of the findings are etiologically nonspecific. The aim of this review is to discuss the etiologies and accompanying adverse tissue reactions seen with prosthesis failure, including the findings seen in aseptic lymphocyte –dominated vasculitis-associated lesion. Trends in Extramural Consultation: Comparison between Subspecialized and General Surgical Pathology Service Models
Academic and community hospital pathology groups are increasingly adopting subspecialized service models for surgical pathology (SP) practice. Reasons cited include improvements in sign-out efficiency, quality and accuracy, enhancement of clinician-pathologist communications, and augmentation of resident training quality. However, there is a paucity of published quantitative data regarding the outcomes of transitioning from general to subspecialized SP service coverage. (Source: Annals of Diagnostic Pathology)

Key Gaps in Pathologic Reporting for Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasms: Time for Universal Synoptic Reporting?
The prognosis of appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (AMN) is directly related to their histopathology. Existing classification schemes encompass tumors with widely divergent clinical behaviors within a single diagnosis, making it difficult for clinicians to interpret pathology reports to counsel patients on optimal management. We sought to examine pathology reports generated for AMN for inclusion of essential histologic features. (Source: Annals of Diagnostic Pathology)

Intralymphatic Nevus Cells in Benign Nevi
The histogenesis of nevus cell aggregates in lymph nodes lesion is controversial and various hypotheses have been used to explain their origin. One of them is the transport of cells from cutaneous nevi or lesions to lymph nodes, called mechanical transport theory. We investigated in our cases of benign nevi to obtain evidence to substantiate this theory. 369 benign cutaneous nevi were prospectively evaluated in excisional biopsy samples. Immunohistochemical stainings for CD31 and podoplanin (D2 –40) were performed in the cases with intralymphatic nevus cell aggregate (ILNA), suspected for ILNA and/or intralymphatic nevus...

Proliferation centers in bone marrows involved by chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL/SLL): a clinicopathologic analysis
Proliferation centers (PCs) are a characteristic finding in CLL/SLL lymph nodes, and their presence and extent in this site are not currently felt to be related to clinical course. In contrast, detailed clinicopathologic analyses of bone marrow (BM) PCs have not been previously reported. (Source: Annals of Diagnostic Pathology)

Diagnostic utility of epithelial and melanocitic markers with double sequential immunohistochemical staining in differentiating melanoma in situ from invasive melanoma
Identification of melanoma in situ and its distinction from invasive melanoma is important due to its significant impact on morbidity and mortality. However, This interpretation can cause pitfalls in the diagnosis even with the use of immunohistochemistry. The aim of this study is to evaluate the diagnostic utility of epithelial makers (AE1/AE3, CK5/6 and p63) combined with melanocytic markers (HMB-45 S-100 or Melan A) using dual-color immunohistochemical staining, performed on a single slide by sequentially applying the antibodies. Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma of breast —evaluation for Epstein-Barr virus–encoded RNA, human papillomavirus, and markers of basal cell differentiation
This is a largest series of 5 cases of lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (LEC) of the breast attempting to look at the expression of basal cytokeratins (CKs), human papillomavirus, and Epstein-Barr virus –encoded RNAs in these tumors. Five cases were selected after stringent evaluation of all breast carcinomas showing dense lymphoid infiltration. Histologically, all these tumors showed the typical histology except 1 tumor that showed an unusual granulomatous response. All tumors were negative for estrogen and progesterone receptors and HER2 (triple negative). (Source: Annals of Diagnostic Pathology)

Differential expression of epithelial cell adhesion molecule in salivary gland neoplasms
Epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM) is the epithelial-specific molecule expressed on various epithelial cell types. The function of EpCAM involves cellular adhesion, proliferation, and signaling in both normal tissues and cancers. The purposes of this study were to investigate the EpCAM expression in salivary gland neoplasms and examine its relationship with pathologic characteristics. Forty-two cases of salivary gland neoplasms, including 20 mucoepidermoid carcinomas (MECs), 11 adenoid cystic carcinomas (ACCs), 9 pleomorphic adenomas (PAs), and 2 polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinomas (PLGAs) were enrolled. Re: Mammary analog secretory carcinoma of salivary glands: a clinicopathologic study of 11 cases
I have read, with much interest, the study of Din et al [1] on 11 cases of mammary analog secretory carcinoma (MASC) of salivary glands and would like to congratulate them on their publication. However, the authors confirmed thrice that they have reported the youngest patient ages with MASC (9 and 9.5 years old), whereas Keisling et al [2] have reported an MASC case of minor salivary glands of the right cheek associated with t(12;15)(p13;q25) ETV6-NTRK3 gene fusion in a 5-year-old female, earlier in 2014. Immunoexpression of p53 in cutaneous and subcutaneous leiomyosarcomas
In this report, we study the immunoexpression of p53 in 19 malignant smooth muscle tumors of the skin (15 cutaneous leiomyosarcomas, two subcutaneous leiomyosarcomas and two cutaneous metastases of leiomyosarcoma), as well as in one leiomyoma with cellular atypia, therefore complementing a previous study on p53 immunoexpression in leiomyomas of the skin.
