An Analysis of the Factors Influencing the Residual Refractive Astigmatism After Cataract Surgery With Toric Intraocular Lenses [Cornea]
Conclusions. Posterior corneal astigmatism exerts the highest influence on the ERA after toric IOL implantation. Basing calculations on total corneal astigmatism rather than keratometric astigmatism improves the prediction of the residual refractive astigmatism. (Source: Investigative Ophthalmology)

Knockout of {alpha}A-Crystallin Inhibits Ocular Neovascularization [Retina]
Conclusions. Knockout of αA-crystallin inhibited pathologic neovascularization through the VEGF and VEGFR2 signaling pathways both in vitro and in vivo. These results suggest that αA-crystallin could be a novel pharmaceutical target for the prevention of ocular neovascularization. (Source: Investigative Ophthalmology)

Subfoveal Choroidal Thickness and Cataract: The Beijing Eye Study 2011 [Lens]
Conclusions. Although nuclear cataract was not significantly associated with an abnormal SFCT, the association between thin SFCT and subcapsular cataract or cortical cataract may have clinical importance, because thin SFCT is associated with low vision. (Source: Investigative Ophthalmology)

Adaptive Optics Microperimetry and OCT Images Show Preserved Function and Recovery of Cone Visibility in Macular Telangiectasia Type 2 Retinal Lesions [Retina]
Conclusions. Visual sensitivity and recovery of cone visibility in areas of apparent focal cone loss suggests that MacTel type 2 lesions with a preserved ELM may contain functioning cones with abnormal scattering and/or waveguiding characteristics. Quality of Life of Caregivers of Children With Congenital Glaucoma: Development and Validation of a Novel Questionnaire (CarCGQoL) [Glaucoma]
Conclusions. We have developed a psychometrically robust 20-item caregiver derived questionnaire, the CarCGQoL, that is a valid and reliable measure of QoL of caregivers of children with PCG. Given its brevity, it is quick and easy to administer in the clinic, and has potential for use as an outcome measure in clinical trials of treatment of PCG. (Source: Investigative Ophthalmology)

Involvement of Intracellular Calcium Mobilization in IL-8 Activation in Human Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cells [Biochemistry and Molecular Biology]
Conclusions. Collectively, our findings highlight the important role of intracellular calcium mobilization in the activation of IL-8. These findings may be helpful for the clinical applications in the age-related macular degeneration (AMD) prevention and treatment. (Source: Investigative Ophthalmology)

Oxytocin Expression and Function in the Posterior Retina: A Novel Signaling Pathway [Retinal Cell Biology]
Conclusions. Oxytocin and OXTR are present in the posterior retina, and OXT induces an increase in hfRPE [Ca2+]i. These results suggest that the OXT-OXTR signaling pathway is active in the retina. We propose that OXT activation of the OXTR occurs in the posterior retina and that this may serve as a paracrine signaling pathway that contributes to communication between the cone photoreceptor and the RPE. Elevated Expression of Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 and Inflammatory Cytokines in Keratoconus Patients Is Inhibited by Cyclosporine A [Cornea]
Conclusions. The data indicate that corneal epithelium contributes to elevated MMP9 and inflammatory cytokine expression in tears of KC patients. Cyclosporine A treatment reduced MMP9 and inflammatory cytokine levels in an in vitro inflammation model system. In KC patients, CyA treatment reduced MMP9 levels measured in tears with concomitant arrest of disease progression. Therefore, CyA might be a novel treatment strategy in KC patients but requires additional evaluation in larger cohorts. (ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT01746823.) (Source: Investigative Ophthalmology)

Evaluation of 12 Myopia-Associated Genes in Chinese Patients With High Myopia [Biochemistry and Molecular Biology]
Conclusions. We did not find evidence to support the association of myopia with rare variants in these genes, probably due to our limited sample size. Additional studies are expected to validate these results. (Source: Investigative Ophthalmology)

Loss of Citron Kinase Affects a Subset of Progenitor Cells That Alters Late but Not Early Neurogenesis in the Developing Rat Retina [Retinal Cell Biology]
Conclusions. Our study showed that CitK is not required for a subset of RPCs before E14, but is necessary for RPC survival post E14. This in turn results in normal early embryonic neurogenesis, but severely compromised later embryonic and postnatal neurogenesis. (Source: Investigative Ophthalmology)

Association Between Body Composition and Retinal Vascular Caliber in Children and Adolescents [Clinical and Epidemiologic Research]
Conclusions. In adolescents, greater body fat deposition is related to narrower retinal arterioles and wider retinal venules, and higher body water proportion is associated with retinal arterioles widening and retinal venules narrowing. Even during childhood, body composition might have an association with systemic microvasculature. (Source: Investigative Ophthalmology)
