Dendritic cells and macrophages in bladder tumor microenvironment as predictors of response to bacillus Calmette–Guérin immunotherapy
Conclusion: The pretreatment level and location of TAMs and TIDCs in NMIUC influence the BCG treatment outcome. Patients with low infiltration experienced significantly lower rates of BCG treatment failure. These observations present new predictor biomarkers of the response to BCG immunotherapy that could affect the choice of treatment after validation in larger cohorts. A study of the prognostic and predictive role of HER-2 expression in bladder urothelial carcinoma
Background: Human epidermal growth factor receptor type 2 (HER-2) is implicated in cellular transformation in a variety of solid tumors. However, its prognostic role in bladder cancer remains controversial. Our aim was to clarify the immunohistochemical HER-2 expression and its relationship with clinicopathological outcomes and prognosis. Patients and methods: The present study included 90 urinary bladder urothelial carcinoma and 15 non-neoplastic cases. The samples were collected from the Pathology Department, Faculty of Medicine, Menoufia University, between 2010 and 2015. In all, 68 patients were males, with a mean age...

Immunohistochemical study of CD44 and CD24 as cancer stem cell markers and their prognostic role in invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast
Conclusion: CD44 expression was significantly higher in grade III and triple-negative tumors, indicating poor prognosis. CD24 expression was decreased in grade III and triple-negative tumors. CD44+/CD24− phenotype was higher among grade III and triple-negative tumors. Thus, CD44/CD24 status can be useful for identifying subgroups of breast cancer patients with different clinical behavior. Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 and vascular endothelial growth factor expression in psoriasis, an immunohistochemical study
Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in psoriatic skin and compare them with normal epidermis, and to explore the role of STAT3 and VEGF in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. Patients and methods: Immunohistochemical expression of STAT3 and VEGF was evaluated in skin biopsies from 30 psoriatic patients and from 15 healthy participants as a control group. Results: STAT3 was significantly overexpressed in psoriasis in comparison with the control group (P (Source: Egyptian Journal of Pathology)

Evaluation of mucosal mast cell density in pediatric eosinophilic gastroenteritis
Conclusion: Our findings suggest that mast cells may play a possible role in pediatric EG as demonstrated by their increased density, activation, and their significant correlation with mucosal eosinophilic infiltration. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Pathology)

Value of E-cadherin and desmin immunohistochemistry in distinguishing metastatic adenocarcinoma from reactive mesothelial hyperplasia in serous effusion
Conclusion: The use of this short panel can be helpful for better differentiation of adenocarcinoma and reactive mesothelial hyperplasia in serous effusions, and it helps avoid overdiagnosis of metastatic adenocarcinoma because of the high sensitivity of ECAD. Immunohistochemical study of macrophage density as a predictive parameter in classic Hodgkin lymphoma
Conclusion: A predictive role for TAM can be suggested in classic HL based on the results of the present study. Moreover, a significant association between macrophages and angiogenesis can be proposed. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Pathology)

Immunohistochemical detection of α-methylacyl coenzyme A racemase in gastric adenocarcinoma and its precursor lesions: a comparative study with the proliferative index of the tumor
Conclusion: As a new studied marker in gastric lesions, AMACR% is not expressed in normal gastric tissue and it significantly diagnoses dysplastic lesions and carcinomas, but still Ki-67% is superior to AMACR% as a diagnostic test differentiating benign, dysplastic, and malignant gastric lesions. Value of TWIST expression in the prognosis of mammary invasive duct carcinoma
Conclusion: We conclude that TWIST is a reliable prognostic marker in breast carcinoma as it correlates with different well-known factors of prognosis in breast carcinoma, which makes it an excellent molecular target for future therapy. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Pathology)

Implications of OCT4 in breast carcinoma from initiation to lymph node metastasis: an immunohistochemical study
This study aimed to delineate the role and the clinicopathological implications of OCT4 expression in the development, progression, and lymph nodal metastatic potential of breast carcinoma. This study was conducted on a total number of 60 breast specimens. OCT4 immunohistochemical expression was assessed in 12 benign epithelial hyperplasia cases and 48 breast carcinoma cases with their adjacent carcinoma in-situ component and their corresponding metastatic lymph nodes (MLNs). OCT4 expression in breast carcinomas was significantly higher than that in hyperplastic lesions. Moderate agreement was found between OCT4 expression...

Mismatch repair protein expression status in Egyptian colorectal carcinoma: a single-centre study
Conclusion: HNPCC is not uncommon in Egypt. Immunohistochemistry can detect MMR-deficient CRCs and can specify the defective gene. Thus, routine testing of all newly diagnosed CRCs for MMR protein expression is recommended to identify suspected cases of HNPCC and accordingly direct their future management. Impact of thyroid transcription factor-1 on clinicopathological parameters and outcome of patients with pulmonary adenocarcinoma
Background: Lung cancer is the most lethal cancer worldwide. Search for prognostic markers that allow identification of patient’s risk and selection of new therapy with better response, low recurrence, and improved survival is highly recommended. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between thyroid transcription factor-1 (TTF-1) immunohistochemical expression and clinicopathological parameters and patients’ survival. Materials and methods: We analyzed a total of 97 patients with primary pulmonary adenocarcinoma diagnosed between January 2005 and December 2011. Patients’ clinicopathological ch...

Are tumor necrosis factor-α and matrix metalloproteinase-9 able to induce basal cell degeneration and enhance tissue destruction in cutaneous lichen planus?
Conclusion: In CLP, TNF-α and MMP-9 are produced by active lymphocytes and altered keratinocytes. They may act in cyclical mechanism and are responsible for tissue destruction mainly in the active stage of this disease. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Pathology)

Diagnostic role of CD44 and desmoglein 3 in sinonasal inverted papilloma and associated squamous cell carcinoma
Conclusion: The current study reports for the first time the combined use of CD44 and DSG3 immunohistochemical expression in normal sinonasal mucosa, IP, and SCC on top of IP. CD44 is more sensitive for IP compared with DSG3, which is more sensitive in the detection of SCC on top of IP. Therefore, the combined use of both markers is of diagnostic value in these tumors. Significance of silent mating type information regulation 2 homolog 1 and claudin 4 expression in gastric carcinoma and precursor lesions: an immunohistochemical study
Conclusion: The results suggested that both SIRT1 and claudin 4 might be involved in gastric carcinogenesis. The more advanced the TNM GC stage, the higher the expression of SIRT1 and claudin 4. This suggests their possible role in GC progression. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Pathology)
