The nonbilharzial urothelial carcinoma in Egypt: analysis of risk factors of stage progression in 530 patients
Conclusion Pathologic parameters are more important than biomarkers in determining stage progression. More research efforts are needed in early detection, validation of biomarkers by prospective clinical trials, and development of new models using multiple risk factors to increase their predictive power. Hypoxia-inducible factor-1α expression in colorectal carcinoma
Conclusion HIF-1α immunohistochemical expression is significantly correlated with tumor invasiveness (T) and modified Dukes’ classification that suggests the possible role of HIF-1α in tumor invasion, metastasis, and as a prognostic marker for prediction of the behavior of CRC cases. The diagnostic utility of cyclinD1, galactin3, and CK19 in differentiation between benign and malignant thyroid nodules: a retrospective study
Conclusion and recommendation Our findings advocate that a combination of K19/cyclinD1 markers may increase the reliability of identification of thyroid malignancy. We recommend more studies on cyclinD1 expression in wider thyroid lesions and more precise statistical results with a higher number of cases. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Pathology)

P57 and Ki-67 expression in hydropic abortion and molar pregnancy
This study was done to investigate the role of p57 and Ki-67 IHC in distinguishing between CM, PM, and hydropic abortion (HA). Patients and methods Twenty cases of molar pregnancies – 10 (CM) and 10 (PM) – and 10 HA diagnosed on histopathological criteria were studied histopathologically along with IHC using antibodies against p57 and Ki-67. The cases were collected in a retrospective manner from Pathology Lab, Faculty of Medicine, Mansoura University from January 2015 to December 2015. Results We found that CM demonstrated enlarged villi with circumferential trophoblastic hyperplasia. Villous stromal cells and c...

Prognostic roles of L1-cell adhesion molecule up-regulation in association with p53 overexpression and E-cadherin down-regulation in endometrial carcinoma patients
Background The recent guidelines for endometrial carcinoma (EC) management classify patients into low-risk, intermediate-risk, high-to-intermediate risk, and high-risk groups. A few patients in the category of low-risk disease have been found to have relapse of the tumor; this has not been explained to date. Moreover, it is essential to assess the prognosis of other risk groups of EC. Also, the identification of patients for whom the adjuvant therapy will be more beneficial than other patients who will not require additional management after surgery is an essential aim of the recent researches on EC. Thus, recent studies...

Prognostic value of CD74 and p53 expression in colorectal cancer
Conclusion CD74 and p53 could serve as poor prognostic indicators in patients with CRC. CD74 expression was inversely related to tumor infiltrating lymphocytes suggesting that CD74 is involved in immune escape process. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Pathology)

Immunohistochemical assessment of carbonic anhydrase IX and cellular proliferation in oral squamous cell carcinoma and their relation to clinicopathological parameters
Conclusion These data show that the combination of the expression of CAIX and PCNA may provide a useful prognostic marker in OSCC. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Pathology)

The impact of lymphocytic infiltrates on the progression of benign prostatic hyperplasia to prostatic carcinoma
Background and objective Although lymphocytic infiltrate (LI) has been reported in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate carcinoma (PC), its role in BPH progression to PC is still a topic of debate. The aim of this study is to investigate the role of LI in PC progression through correlation of LI to expression of nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) and cyclin D1 aiming to find a new diagnostic marker, or a potential therapeutic target that may improve PC management. Materials and methods We studied 100 BPH cases and 50% of these cases also had PC. Archived paraffin blocks were microtomed at 4–5 μm and stained w...

Prognostic value of HER-2/neu, Ki-67, MCM-2, and p21 expression in nonmuscle invasive bladder cancer
Conclusion In Ta/T1 nonmuscle invasive bladder cancer, tumor substage, tumor grade, and the Ki-67 proliferation index are associated strongly with tumor progression, whereas young age was the only predictor for recurrence. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Pathology)

Androgen receptor status in breast carcinoma subtypes and its possible prognostic role
Conclusion Our results emphasized the role of AR in breast cancer and its association with breast cancer subtypes. Multifaceted treatment is more promising for cure; hence, it is necessary to develop as many targets for therapy as possible, and AR appeared to be an eventual promising target for therapy with particular value in each breast cancer subtype. An immunohistochemical study of histone H1.5 in correlation with clinicopathologic features of invasive duct carcinoma (not otherwise specified)
Conclusion The high expression of HH1.5 was associated with poor prognostic factors, including its differential expression in the carcinoma molecular types. Further characterization of the role of HH1.5 in breast carcinomas should be performed for the development of novel targeted therapies in this type of cancer. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Pathology)

The promising role of placental growth factor in association with cyclooxygenase-2 as predictive markers for recurrent ovarian endometriosis
Objective Various risk factors, both patient dependent and surgeon dependent, have been involved in the recurrence of ovarian endometriosis. Identification of an ideal biomarker to predict the recurrence of ovarian endometriosis is essential for a proper treatment plan, as it could allow the use of targeted therapy to postpone or even prevent recurrence altogether and prevent unnecessary medication, thus attaining effectiveness and diminishing healthcare costs. Patients and methods In all, 95 suspected patients with ovarian endometriosis, who were admitted to Tanta Gynecology and Obstetrics Department for laparoscopy ...

A comparative study of HER-2 status evaluation in breast carcinoma by silver in-situ hybridization and fluorescence in-situ hybridization using ASCO/CAP guidelines
Conclusion SISH is a good comparable test to FISH in evaluation of HER-2 status in breast carcinoma. Both of them achieved high concordance rate, making any one of them the best adjunct test to validate HER-2 immunohistochemistry, aiming at proper selection of patients who are candidate for HER-2-targeted therapy.
