Role of GATA3, CK7, CK20 and CK14 in distinguishing urinary bladder squamous cell carcinoma and urothelial carcinoma with squamous differentiation
Urothelial carcinomas (UC) can demonstrate a broad spectrum of morphology and frequently demonstrate squamous differentiation. Urothelial neoplasms with squamous morphology raise the differential diagnosis between pure primary squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and UC with squamous differentiation. Accurate identification between these entities is critical due to differing prognosis and therapeutic strategies. GATA3-binding protein 3 (GATA3) is a novel immunohistochemical marker for UC; however, few studies have investigated the role of GATA3 as a marker for urinary bladder SCC. The purpose of this study was to investigate the ...

Differentiation of benign from malignant follicular-cell-derived thyroid lesions: an immunohistochemical study
Conclusion: Combined use of markers such as galectin-3 and CK-19 and IMP-3 did not markedly increase the sensitivity or specificity over using a single marker. Each studied marker has sensitivity and specificity for certain thyroid lesion. Immunohistochemical stains of galectin-3, CK-19, and IMP-3, especially when used in combination, can be a useful adjunct in the histopathological diagnoses of thyroid lesions. Exploring the pathological changes in mastectomies for breast cancer
Conclusion: The high percentage of MF/MC in situ or invasive cancer in this study is an evidence of the wide intramammary distribution of breast cancer disease. The high frequency of columnar cell lesions in breasts removed for cancer adds plausibility to the premalignant potential of these lesions. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Pathology)

Immunohistochemical study of β-catenin and HER2/neu in colorectal carcinoma
Conclusion: The evaluation of β-catenin expression combined with other pathologic parameters may yield more accurate information about the prognosis of colonic adenocarcinoma, whereas no such information may be obtained with HER2/neu expression. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Pathology)

Thyroid transcription factor-1, Napsin-A, and p63 expression in small cell carcinoma versus adenocarcinoma of the lung
Conclusion: TTF-1+/Nap−/p63− is highly characteristic for the diagnosis of SCCL, whereas TTF-1+/Nap+/p63− is highly definite for the diagnosis of lung AdC, followed to a lesser extent by TTF-1−/Nap+/p63− and minimally TTF-1+/Nap+/p63+. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Pathology)

Immunohistochemical expression of p16 and p53 in oral and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma: a pilot study in Egyptian patients
This study aims at exploring the expression of p16 and p53 in oral and oropharyngeal SCC in Egyptian patients and correlating their expression with the relevant clinicopathological parameters. Materials and methods: Forty-four paraffin blocks of oral and oropharyngeal SCC were collected with their clinicopathological data and immunostained for p16 and p53. Results: p16 was overexpressed in 27/44 cases (61.4%) and was related to a lower tumor grade (P (Source: Egyptian Journal of Pathology)

A comparative study of immunohistochemical markers in the detection of early myocardial infarction (an autopsy study)
Immunohistochemical techniques have proven effective in forensic pathology use as they can be applied to tissue samples fixed in formalin and embedded in paraffin. In this work, we selected a panel of antibodies, desmin, troponin T (cTnT), and myoglobin (MB), for the detection of early myocardial infarction in human autopsy hearts with suspected sudden cardiac death to compare the sensitivity and the reliability of these markers and to study the potential effect of autolysis on their sensitivity. Histologic sections from the myocardium from 20 autopsy cases were studied by immunohistochemistry with the three different anti...

Histopathological predictors of virological response in chronic hepatitis C patients
Conclusion: We conclude that lower Metavir stage and lower degree of steatosis are good histopathological predictors for SVR. There is significant association between grade of inflammation and iron content and SVR in chronic hepatitis C patients. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Pathology)

The potential role of fascin and HER2/neu in predicting invasion in urothelial carcinoma
Conclusion: Our results showed an association between fascin immunostaining and urothelial carcinoma invasiveness and suggest that fascin overexpression may be a marker of aggressive urothelial carcinomas. High levels of HER2/neu protein overexpression were also observed in pTa/T1 and pT2, with no significant difference (P=0.06), suggesting that high-level protein overexpression occurs before tumor progression. Significance of the expression of EMMPRIN, CD24 and p16INK4a promoter methylation in gastric carcinoma
Introduction: A lot of effort has been made to investigate the prognostic biomarkers, including epigenetic markers, in cancers, helping to identify high-risk cancer patients who might need adjuvant treatment after surgery. Studies suggest complex genetic and epigenetic profiles of the gastric carcinoma patients, indicating the need for the identification of molecular markers for this tumour type. Aim: The aim of the study was to clarify the role of extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer (EMMPRIN) (CD147), CD24 and methylation of p16 promoter in the genesis and progression of gastric carcinoma. Materials and methods...

Stem cell markers nestin and CD133 are markers of aggressive behavior in astrocytic tumors: an immunohistochemical study in an Egyptian population
Conclusion: Nestin and CD133 are markers of aggressive behavior of astrocytomas in Egyptian patients. This may be used as an ancillary method for grading and/or directing the therapeutic decision. The high expression in these two cancer stem cell markers in aggressive astrocytomas supports the role of glioma stem cells in the aggressiveness of astrocytomas. Diagnostic value of galectin-3 and HBME-1 expression in follicular thyroid tumors
This study was carried out to evaluate the role of immunohistochemical markers, including galectin-3 (Gal-3) and Hector Battifora mesothelial cell-1 (HBME-1), in the differential diagnosis of benign and malignant thyroid lesions. Materials and methods: The expressions of Gal-3 and HBME-1 were tested in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues from 58 surgically resected thyroid lesions, including 28 benign (16 nodular hyperplasia and 12 thyroid adenoma) and 30 malignant lesions (14 papillary carcinoma and 16 follicular carcinoma). Immunostaining with the standard avidin–biotin complex technique was performed using monocl...

Study of immunohistochemical expression of prostate stem cell antigen in prostatic carcinoma
Conclusion: PSCA expression levels increase from BPH through LGPIN and HGPIN to Pca. Thus, PSCA might represent an ideal marker to discriminate between malignant and benign glands. Moreover, it may possess prognostic utility and may be a promising molecular target for the diagnosis and treatment of prostatic adenocarcinoma. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Pathology)

The frequency of epidermal growth factor receptor mutations in non-small-cell lung cancer patients from Egypt
In this study, 195 adenocarcinoma (ACA) patients with NSCLC were diagnosed and graded on the basis of histopathology using hematoxylin and eosin stain. The samples were subjected to immunohistochemistry studies and were confirmed as positive using TTF1 and as negative using P63. The positive samples were subjected to PCR amplification for EGFR mutation study. Results: On the basis of hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections, 15 of 195 ACA patients were of grade I, 160 patients (the majority) were of grade II, and 20 patients were of grade III (195 vs. 20, P (Source: Egyptian Journal of Pathology)
