The value of androgen receptor, cytokeratin 20, and cytokeratin 7 expression in differentiating basal cell carcinoma from trichoepithelioma
Background: Trichoepithelioma (TE) is a benign neoplasm that shares both clinical and histological features with basal cell carcinoma (BCC). It is important to distinguish these neoplasms because they require different therapeutic planning. Many studies have addressed the use of immunohistochemistry to improve the differential diagnosis of these tumors. Evaluation of androgen receptor (AR), cytokeratin 20 (CK20), and CK7 expression may aid in distinguishing the two tumors. Materials and methods: Immunohistochemical expression of AR, CK20, and CK7 was studied in 30 cases of TE and BCC. Results: AR was expressed in 11 of 15 ...

Diagnostic role of fine needle aspiration cytology in mediastinal lymphadenopathy, with emphasis on subcarinal lymph nodes
Conclusion: FNAC under CT guidance is a highly sensitive and specific technique for the diagnosis of mediastinal lymphadenopathy, including less accessible sites such as the subcarinal group. Results are markedly improved when FNAC is used in conjunction with ancillary techniques such as immunocytochemistry, microbiological, biochemical, and clinicoradiological studies. Study of the diagnostic utility of fascin and PU.1 in Hodgkin’s lymphoma, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, and anaplastic large cell lymphoma
Conclusion: Positive staining for fascin is not useful for distinguishing ALCL from HD. In some cases, fascin negativity may help rule out classic HD. PU.1 is superior to fascin in differentiating NLPHL from T-cell-rich variant of DLBCL. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Pathology)

Immunohistochemical expression of stem cell markers CD133 and Oct4 in colorectal adenocarcinoma
In conclusion, we show that Oct4 may play a role in colorectal adenocarcinoma development and progression, and we suggest its utilization as a significant prognostic marker in colorectal carcinoma patients. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Pathology)

NY-BR-1 can be better than mammaglobin as a differentiation antigen if metastasis from breast carcinoma is suspected
Conclusion: NY-BR-1 can aid the identification of mammary origin of metastatic carcinoma and it could be more useful than mammaglobin as a differentiation antigen. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Pathology)

Her2/neu expression in urothelial dysplasia, carcinoma in situ, and superficial urothelial carcinoma and its value in assessing the response to BCG therapy
Conclusion: Evaluation of Her2/neu overexpression as well as histopathologic features may help in differentiating high-grade urothelial dysplasia from urothelial carcinoma, both carcinoma in situ and superficially invasive urothelial carcinomas of the urinary bladder (Ta–T1). Her2/neu overexpression increased with increase in tumor grade. Thus the assessment of Her2/neu status can be helpful in identifying patients at high risk of disease progression. The reduction in expression of Her2/neu after BCG adjuvant therapy in superficial urothelial carcinoma cases supports the role of BCG as a targeted therapy for these tumors...

The prognostic significance of vascular endothelial growth factor expression in Wilms’ tumor and its relevance to WT1 expression
Conclusion: VEGF expression appears to have no prognostic influence on Wilms’ tumor. WT1 expression, advanced tumor stage, and the high-risk pathological group are poor prognostic factors in Wilms’ tumor. The high expression of VEGF and WT1 and their significant positive correlation implicate them in tumorogenesis and further support the postulated regulatory influence of VEGF over WT1 expression. This points toward the potential role of targeted therapy in Wilms’ tumor. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Pathology)

Effect of hypoxic microenvironment on expression of stem cell marker (nestin) in astrocytic tumors
Introduction: Gliomas account for 40% of the primary central nervous system tumors in western countries, and for about one-third (37.3%) in Egypt. Identification of the cellular origin of gliomas presents an opportunity for improving the treatment strategies. It has been postulated that astrocytomas may be originated from neural stem cells. Hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) is considered one of the key hypoxia regulatory factors. Hypoxia may be a critical component of a stem cell niche and contributes to the tumor initiation and maintenance of cancer stem cells (CSCs). In the present study, we hypothesized that the ex...

Histological patterns and differential diagnosis of common inflammatory dermatoses
Inflammatory disorders of the skin can often be diagnostic dilemmas as the skin can show protean morphological reaction patterns, many of which may have overlapping histological appearances. An accurate diagnosis may be difficult to make under these circumstances, if histology is interpreted in isolation. The key to accurate diagnosis lies in the identification of the predominant histological pattern, formulating a list of differential diagnoses based on the pattern and correlating the pattern with the clinical scenario and distribution of lesions. Ancillary methods including special stains and direct immunofluorescence ar...
