The diagnostic utility of antibodies to smoothelin and desmin in staging of urothelial carcinoma
Conclusion: The relatively distinct immunohistochemical staining pattern of smoothelin between MP and MM (including its hyperplastic forms) makes it a robust and attractive marker to be incorporated into the contemporary diagnostic armamentarium for the sometimes difficult area of staging bladder urothelial carcinoma. It also confirmed the use of desmin to differentiate between smooth muscle cells (whether MM or MP) and proliferating myofibroblasts. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Pathology)

An ultrastructural study of the association between Helicobacter pylori and the gastric mucosa
Conclusion: This study confirmed the existence of intracellular H. pylori, both coccoid and bacillary forms, in gastric endoscopic biopsies. The more prominent cell injury associated with internalization of H. pylori and the higher incidence of intracellular organisms in ulcer patients suggest that internalization of H. pylori does play a role in the pathogenesis of peptic ulcers. A multifactorial study of some markers involved in the pathogenesis and the prognosis of schistosomal versus nonschistosomal bladder cancer
Conclusion: COX-2, iNOS, p53, and VEGF were highly expressed and positively correlated in SBC compared with NSBC. Thus, their expression and correlation may be of value in further understanding the more aggressive biological behavior of SBC and might provide selective targets for anticancer therapy. Role of E-cadherin in psoriasis
Background: Psoriasis is a common chronic autoimmune and inflammatory skin disease whose etiology and pathogenesis remain unclear. It is characterized by hyperproliferation and incomplete differentiation of epidermal keratinocytes, but the exact factors causing these changes are still unknown. E-cadherin is a cell adhesion transmembrane molecule that is required for the adhesive properties of keratinocytes and skin differentiation. Objective: The aim of the present work was to investigate the possible role of E-cadherin in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. Patients and methods: The expression of E-cadherin was analyzed on ski...

Immunohistochemical expression of the high-mobility group box-1 protein in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma: the significance of its overexpression and subcellular localization
Aim of the work: The aim of the present study was to investigate high-mobility group box-1 (HMGB1) expression and subcellular distribution in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) tissue. Materials and methods: Using immunohistochemistry, HMGB1 protein expression in 72 HNSCC specimens and its association with the clinicopathological characteristics were investigated. Tumour proliferation indices (PIs) were also assessed using Ki-67 immunoreactivity and examined for the presence of a possible correlation with HMGB1 expression. Results: Nuclear HMGB1 expression was detected in 84.8% of the tumours, and among them, 39...

HER2/neu estimation in breast cancer: a comparative study between quantitative real-time PCR and immunohistochemistry
Conclusion: The study showed an overall moderate agreement between IHC and qRT-PCR. The low agreement between IHC and qRT-PCR in the positive cases was masked by the high agreement between both techniques in the negative cases. Together, our results support the unsuitable sole use of qRT-PCR as an alternative method for the detection of HER2/neu gene amplification in breast cancer. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Pathology)

Filaggrin expression in atopic dermatitis and ichthyosis vulgaris
Conclusion: A significant deficiency of FLG expression in AD and IV may point toward a structural and functional pathway in explaining disease initiation, with important implications for therapy and prevention. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Pathology)

The axillary lymph nodes in breast carcinoma: their anatomic distribution and metastatic burden by levels
This study included 110 patients. In all operations, axillary dissection was complete including the three levels of nodes. The total series (110 patients) was used to study the anatomic distribution of axillary nodes at different levels as well as to study the rate of metastases at different levels. However, cases with positive nodes (56 patients) were used to determine the metastatic burden. Results: The total number of lymph nodes removed in the 110 cases was 2463 nodes. There were 1196 (48.6%) nodes at level I, 919 (37.3%) at level II, and 348 (14.1%) at level III (PT1 and 50.9% have positive nodes). Anatomically, axill...

Expression and significance of PTEN and GLUT-1 in proliferative endometrium, endometrial hyperplasia, and endometrioid adenocarcinoma
Conclusion: Lack of PTEN expression and overexpression of GLUT-1 may be early events in the tumorigenesis of endometrioid adenocarcinoma. The combination of PTEN-negative/GLUT-1-positive results may be useful in distinguishing benign hyperplasia from endometrial intraepithelial neoplasia and endometrioid adenocarcinoma. The diagnostic role of fine-needle aspiration cytology combined with ultrasonography in cystic breast lesions
Conclusion: The accuracy of sonography and fine-needle aspiration in detecting and allowing the correct diagnosis of cysts has been reported to be almost 100%. The use of sonography has reduced the number of biopsies performed for benign breast cysts. Aspiration should be followed by excisional biopsy when (a) blood or green fluid is aspirated or (b) the mass does not disappear completely. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Pathology)

Immunohistochemical expression of cyclooxygenase-2 and CD44 (stem cell marker) in urinary bladder cancer
Conclusion: There was a strong association between urinary bladder schistosomiasis infection and increased risks of developing TCC and SCC of the urinary bladder. We found that there was a significant positive association between CD44 (stem cell marker) and COX-2 expression in schistosomal-associated lesions of the urinary bladder (P (Source: Egyptian Journal of Pathology)

The reliability of digital image analysis and immunohistochemistry in the estimation of liver fibrosis in hepatitis C virus-related chronic hepatitis
Conclusion: We found that the fibrosis ratio of liver biopsy specimens calculated by digital IA is not always reflective of fibrosis in chronic hepatitis as indicated by subjective scoring classifications. This applies particularly to livers that are normal or show early fibrosis (stage 0–2). (Source: Egyptian Journal of Pathology)

A comparative study of immunohistochemical expression of DOG1 compared with CD117 in the diagnosis of gastrointestinal stromal tumors
Conclusion: A combination of DOG1 and C-KIT immunostaining is sufficient to confirm the diagnosis in histologically suspected GIST cases in order not to miss patients who could benefit from therapy. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Pathology)

The significance of stem cell marker LGR5 and VEGF expression in esophageal carcinoma
Objective: Evaluation of the expression of the intestinal stem cell marker (LGR5) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in esophageal adenocarcinomas (EAC) with and without Barrett esophagus (BE) and in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and to correlate them with clinicopathological data. Materials and methods: Expression of the putative intestinal stem cell markers LgR5 and VEGF was analyzed immunohistochemically in 12 cases of BE, 12 cases of BE with dysplasia, 12 cases of EAC with BE, 18 cases of EAC without BE, and 20 cases of ESCCs. Results: LgR5 was overexpressed in 50% of BE without dysplasia, in 82....
