A study of the prognostic and predictive role of HER-2 expression in bladder urothelial carcinoma

Background: Human epidermal growth factor receptor type 2 (HER-2) is implicated in cellular transformation in a variety of solid tumors. However, its prognostic role in bladder cancer remains controversial. Our aim was to clarify the immunohistochemical HER-2 expression and its relationship with clinicopathological outcomes and prognosis. Patients and methods: The present study included 90 urinary bladder urothelial carcinoma and 15 non-neoplastic cases. The samples were collected from the Pathology Department, Faculty of Medicine, Menoufia University, between 2010 and 2015. In all, 68 patients were males, with a mean age of 60.86±8.3 years. Overall survival time was available for 57 patients. Results: A total of 51 urothelial carcinoma cases were positive, whereas 39 were negative for HER-2 expression.
