Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT): A retrospective analysis and a proposal of treatment on behalf of the Grupo Espa ñol De Trasplante de Medula Osea en Niños (GETMON) and the Grupo Español de Trasplante Hematopoyetico (GETH)
Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) is a complication of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) associated with poor outcome. However, an optimal therapeutic approach is lacking.Between 2000 and 2015, 4099 allogeneic HSCT were performed in eight pediatric centers of the Grupo Espa ñol De Trasplante de Medula Osea en Niños (GETMON) and six adult centers of the Grupo Español de Trasplante Hematopoyetico (GETH). Sixty cases of AIHA were registered with a cumulative incidence of 1.5% occurring at a median of 6 months after HSCT. (Source: Transfusion Medicine Reviews)

The Gerbich blood group system: old knowledge, new importance
Antigens of the Gerbich blood group system are expressed on glycophorin C (GPC) and glycophorin D (GPD), minor sialoglycoproteins of human erythrocytes. GPC and GPD help maintain erythrocyte shape of and contributes to the stability of its membrane. There are six high-prevalence Gerbich antigens: Ge2, Ge3, Ge4, GEPL (GE10), GEAT (GE11), GETI (GE12) and five low-prevalence Gerbich antigens: Wb (GE5), Lsa (GE6), Ana (GE7), Dha (GE8), GEIS (GE9). Some Gerbich antigens (Ge4, Wb, Dha, GEAT) are expressed only on GPC, two (Ge2, Ana) are expressed only on GPD, while others (Ge3, Lsa, GEIS, GEPL, GETI) are expressed on both GPC an...

The efficacy and safety of topical tranexamic acid: A systematic review and meta-analysis
The objective of our review is to investigate the efficacy and safety of topically applied tranexamic acid compared to both placebo, and the intravenous administration. (Source: Transfusion Medicine Reviews)

Effect of age of red cells for transfusion on patient outcomes: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Longer storage duration of red blood cell (RBC) units prior to transfusion has been associated with worse outcomes in observational studies. We performed a systematic review, including recently published randomized trials, to determine if storage age of RBCs is associated with mortality, morbidity or adverse events in patients. Searches were performed up to 21st July 2017 in Medline (OvidSP), 20 July in EMBASE (OvidSP) and June 2017 in Cochrane Library. Eligible studies were randomized controlled trials comparing transfusion of fresher or freshest available with older or standard issue RBCs. (Source: Transfusion Medicine Reviews)

Simulation-based Transfusion Education for Medical Students
We were interested to read the work by Konia et al [1] that compared three different methods for teaching transfusion medicine to medical students. At our institution, we developed a mixed methods Transfusion Medicine curriculum which uses a simulation component. We implemented this approach as a mandatory component for second-year medical students in 2017. All members of the second-year medical student class present on the day of the activity (N = 50) participated. Students were divided into working groups of 5-6 students. An Observational Study of 3 Different Transfusion Medicine Teaching Methods for Medical Students
Knowledge deficits of transfusion medicine are prevalent among learners and practicing physicians. In the past, the transfusion medicine community has thoughtfully defined the content of transfusion medicine curriculums through Transfusion Medicine Academic Award Group and The Academy of Clinical Laboratory Physicians and Scientists. The manner in which the curriculum should be delivered has been less carefully examined and defined. We completed an observational study in which we analyzed 3 different teaching techniques: in-person faculty-led simulation curriculum consisting of didactic session and simulation ( “Simulati...
