Patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea Have Cardiac Repolarization Disturbances when Travelling to Altitude: Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Trial of Acetazolamide
Conclusions:At 2590 m OSA patients experienced cardiac repolarization disturbances in association with hypoxemia. Prolongation of meanQTc at altitude was prevented and hypoxemia was improved by acetazolamide, whereas maxQTc remained increased suggesting imperfect protection from repolarization disturbances.Clinical Trial Registration:ClinicalTrials.gov ID: NTC-00714740. Age-Related Reduction of Recovery Sleep and Arousal Threshold in Drosophila
Conclusions: < /h3 > < p id="d7e155" > Further studies are certainly needed, but we suggest that the lower homeostatic sleep drive of older flies causes their decreased arousal threshold. < /p > < /div > < div class="section" > < a name="d7e157" > < !-- named anchor -- > < /a > < h3 class="section-title" > Citation: < /h3 > < p id="d7e160" > Vienne J, Spann R, Guo F, Rosbash M. Intermittent Short Sleep Results in Lasting Sleep Wake Disturbances and Degeneration of Locus Coeruleus and Orexinergic Neurons
Conclusions: < /h3 > < p id="d7e149" > Collectively these findings demonstrate for the first time that ISS imparts significant lasting disturbances in sleep/wake activity, degeneration of wake-activated LC and orexinergic neurons, and lasting metabolic changes in remaining neurons most consistent with premature senescence. < /p > < /div > < div class="section" > < a name="d7e151" > < !-- named anchor -- > < /a > < h3 class="section-title" > Citation: < /h3 > < p id="d7e154" > Zhu Y, Fenik P, Zhan G, Somach R, Xin R, Veasey S. Effect of Slow Wave Sleep Disruption on Metabolic Parameters in Adolescents
Conclusion: < /h3 > < p id="d7e236" > Pubertal children across a range of body mass indices may be resistant to the adverse metabolic effects of acute SWS disruption. Only those subjects with high SI (i.e., having the greatest & #8220;metabolic reserve & #8221;) demonstrated a consistent decrease in SI. These results suggest that adolescents may have a unique ability to adapt to metabolic stressors, such as acute SWS disruption, to maintain euglycemia. Additional studies are necessary to confirm that this resiliency is maintained in settings of chronic SWS disruption. < /p > < /div > < div class="section" > < a name="d7e23...

Cost-Effectiveness of Group and Internet Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia in Adolescents: Results from a Randomized Controlled Trial

Sleep Duration Associated with the Lowest Risk of Depression/Anxiety in Adolescents
Conclusions: < /h3 > < p id="d7e166" > Sleep duration of & #8805; 8.5 h on school nights may be associated with the lowest risk of depression/anxiety on average in male adolescents. Although the duration was estimated to be shorter in females ( & #8805; 7.5 h) than males, this should be interpreted carefully. Most adolescents may currently be sleeping less than the optimal duration. < /p > < /div > < div class="section" > < a name="d7e168" > < !-- named anchor -- > < /a > < h3 class="section-title" > Commentary: < /h3 > < p id="d7e171" > A commentary on this article appears in this issue on page 1491. < /p > < /div > < div...

Mortality and Its Risk Factors in Patients with Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Behavior Disorder
Conclusions: < /h3 > < p id="d7e243" > Patients with RBD have a higher mortality rate than the general population only if neurodegenerative diseases develop. Sleep and Cognitive Function in Multiple Sclerosis
Conclusions: < /h3 > < p id="d7e166" > Among patients with MS, obstructive sleep apnea and sleep disturbance are significantly associated with diminished visual memory, verbal memory, executive function (as reflected by response inhibition), attention, processing speed, and working memory. If sleep disorders degrade these cognitive functions, effective treatment could offer new opportunities to improve cognitive functioning in patients with MS. < /p > < /div > < div class="section" > < a name="d7e168" > < !-- named anchor -- > < /a > < h3 class="section-title" > Commentary: < /h3 > < p id="d7e171" > A commentary on this ar...

Comparison of Sleep Disorders between Real and Simulated 3,450-m Altitude
Conclusions: < /h3 > < p id="d7e221" > Our results suggest that HH has a greater effect on nocturnal breathing and sleep structure than NH.
