Sleep Apnea and Cancer: Analysis of a Nationwide Population Sample
Conclusions: < /h3 > < p id="d7e142" > In a large nationally representative health insurance database, OSA appears to increase the risk for only a very selective number of cancer types, and does not appear to be associated with an increased risk of metastatic cancer or cancer-related deaths. < /p > < /div > < div class="section" > < a name="d7e144" > < !-- named anchor -- > < /a > < h3 class="section-title" > Citation: < /h3 > < p id="d7e147" > Gozal D, Ham SA, Mokhlesi B. Voluntary Sleep Loss in Rats
Conclusions:We conclude that ICSS and NCS can be used to sleep deprive rats. Changes in rebound NREM sleep EEG SWA occurring after ICSS, NCS, and GH-SDEP suggest that nonspecific effects of the SDEP procedure differentially affect recovery sleep phenotypes.Citation:Oonk M, Krueger JM, Davis CJ. Temporal Organization of the Sleep-Wake Cycle under Food Entrainment in the Rat
Conclusions:Our results support the hypothesis that under food entrainment, the sleep-wake cycle is coupled to a food-entrainable oscillator (FEO). Our findings suggest an unexpected interaction between FEO output and NREM sleep EEG delta activity generators.Citation:Castro-Faúndez J, Díaz J, Ocampo-Garcés A. The Effects of Sleep Problems on the Trajectory of Antisocial Behavior from Adolescence through Early Adulthood in Taiwan: Family Functioning as a Moderator
Conclusions:Our findings highlight the robust link between sleep problems and adolescent antisocial behavior over time. We also show for the first time that the association depends on family functioning. Prevention methods and treatment of sleep problems in youths that incorporate family functioning may yield significant benefits for decreasing antisocial behavior. Sex-specific intervention and prevention approaches should also be considered.Citation:Chang LY, Wu CC, Lin LN, Yen LL, Chang HY. Age-Related Differences in Sleep Architecture and Electroencephalogram in Adolescents in the National Consortium on Alcohol and Neurodevelopment in Adolescence Sample
Conclusions:Substantial differences in sleep architecture and EEG were evident across adolescence in this large group, with sex modifying some relationships. Establishment and follow-up of this cohort allows the investigation of sleep EEG-brain structural relationships and the effect of behaviors, such as alcohol and substance use, on sleep EEG maturation.Citation:Baker FC, Willoughby AR, de Zambotti M, Franzen PL, Prouty D, Javitz H, Hasler B, Clark DB, Colrain IM. The Contribution of Psychosocial Stressors to Sleep among African Americans in the Jackson Heart Study
Conclusions:Psychosocial stressors are associated with higher odds of short sleep, lower average sleep duration, and lower sleep quality in African Americans. Psychosocial stressors may be a point of intervention among African Americans for the improvement of sleep and downstream health outcomes.Citation:Johnson DA, Lisabeth L, Lewis TT, Sims M, Hickson DA, Samdarshi T, Taylor H, Diez Roux AV. Psychosocial Profile and Quality of Life in Children With Type 1 Narcolepsy: A Case-Control Study
Conclusions:Young NT1 patients show a discrete pattern of altered behavioral, thought, and mood profile in comparison with healthy controls and with idiopathic epilepsy patients thus suggesting a direct link with sleepiness. Further studies investigating behavior in patients with idiopathic hypersomnia or type 2 narcolepsy are needed to disentangle the role of REM sleep dysfunction and hypocretin deficiency in psychiatric disorders. Symptoms of withdrawal, depression, somatic complaints, thought problems, and aggressiveness were common, NT1 children perceived lower school competencies than healthy children, and their paren...
