Adaptation to Life in the High Andes: Nocturnal Oxyhemoglobin Saturation in Early Development
Conclusions:Physiological adaptation to high-altitude living in native Andeans is unlikely to compensate for the significant differences we observed between diurnal and nocturnal oxyhemoglobin saturation, most marked in infancy. This vulnerability to sleep-related hypoxia in early childhood has potential lifespan implications. Future studies should characterize the sleep- related respiratory physiology underpinning our observations.Citation:Hill CM, Baya A, Gavlak J, Carroll A, Heathcote K, Dimitriou D, L'Esperance V, Webster R, Holloway J, Virues-Ortega J, Kirkham FJ, Bucks RS, Hogan AM. Aberrant Insular Functional Network Integrity in Patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Conclusions:Brain functional connections from insular sites to other brain regions in OSA subjects represent abnormal autonomic, affective, sensorimotor, and cognitive control networks that may affect both impaired parasympathetic and sympathetic interactions, as well as abnormal sensorimotor integration, affected in the condition. The functional changes likely result from the previously reported structural changes in OSA subjects, as demonstrated by diverse neuroimaging studies.Citation:Park B, Palomares JA, Woo MA, Kang DW, Macey PM, Yan-Go FL, Harper RM, Kumar R. An Examination of Methodological Paradigms for Calculating Upper Airway Critical Pressures during Sleep
Conclusions: Observed Pcrit provides a reliable descriptor of hypotonic upper airway collapsibility. Different methods for determining Pcrit were able to distinguish subjects with and without OSA. Nonadherence with Employer-Mandated Sleep Apnea Treatment and Increased Risk of Serious Truck Crashes
Conclusions:Nontreatment-adherent OSA-positive drivers had a fivefold greater risk of serious preventable crashes, but were discharged or quit rapidly, being retained only one-third as long as other subjects. Thus, the mandated program removed risky nontreatment-adherent drivers and retained adherent drivers at the study firm. Current regulations allow nonadherent OSA cases to drive at another firm by keeping their diagnosis private.Commentary:A commentary on this article appears in this issue on page 961.Citation:Burks SV, Anderson JE, Bombyk M, Haider R, Ganzhorn D, Jiao X, Lewis C, Lexvold A, Liu H, Ning J, Toll A, Hick...

Sleep Characteristics in Early Stages of Chronic Kidney Disease in the HypnoLaus Cohort
Conclusions:Patients with early stages of CKD have impaired SQ, use more hypnotic drugs, and have an increased prevalence of SDB and PLM. After controlling for confounders, objective SQ and PLMI were still independently associated with declining kidney function.Citation:Ogna A, Forni Ogna V, Haba Rubio J, Tobback N, Andries D, Preisig M, Tafti M, Vollenweider P, Waeber G, Marques-Vidal P, Heinzer R. Subjective but Not Actigraphy-Defined Sleep Predicts Next-Day Fatigue in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: A Prospective Daily Diary Study
Conclusions:For the first time we show that nightly subjective sleep predicts next-day fatigue in CFS and identify important factors driving this relationship. Our data suggest that sleep specific interventions, targeting presleep arousal, perceptions of sleep and negative mood on waking, may improve fatigue in CFS.Citation:Russell C, Wearden AJ, Fairclough G, Emsley RA, Kyle SD. Sleep Disturbances and Depression in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis
Conclusions:Sleep disturbances are associated with depression among middle-aged and older adults; these associations may be modified by education and sex. Future research should further test these hypotheses, evaluate whether early detection or treatment of sleep disturbances ameliorate depression, and explore subpopulation differences.Citation:Alcántara C, Biggs ML, Davidson KW, Delaney JA, Jackson CL, Zee PC, Shea SJ, Redline S. Delta Activity at Sleep Onset and Cognitive Performance in Community-Dwelling Older Adults
Conclusions:DASO was relatively common in our sample of community-dwelling, older adults without dementia. DASO was not associated with poorer performance on any cognitive domain. Instead, individuals with DASO demonstrated better performance on a simple reading task. Although these findings suggest that an abnormal EEG activity may represent normal variation, our work underscores the importance of distinguishing DASO from FIRDA when examining sleep in older adults.Commentary:A commentary on this article appears in this issue on page 725.Citation:Kawai M, Beaudreau SA, Gould CE, Hantke NC, Jordan JT, O'Hara R. Association of Anterior Cingulate Glutathione with Sleep Apnea in Older Adults At-Risk for Dementia
Conclusions:Markers of nocturnal hypoxemia and SDB are associated with cerebral oxidative stress in older people at-risk for dementia, suggesting a potential mechanism by which SDB may contribute to brain degeneration, cognitive decline, and dementia. Further work focused on utilizing this biomarker for the early identification and treatment of this possible modifiable risk factor in older persons is now warranted.Citation:Duffy SL, Lagopoulos J, Terpening Z, Lewis SJG, Grunstein R, Mowszowski L, Cross N, Hermens DF, Hickie IB, Naismith SL.
