Silent Cerebral Small Vessel Disease in Restless Legs Syndrome
Conclusion:RLS duration should be taken into account when analyzing the association between RLS and cerebrovascular disease; our data support the hypothesis that a long-lasting RLS and its accompanying periodic limb movements in sleep are a risk factor for silent SVD and perhaps for the development of clinical stroke.Citation:Ferri R, Cosentino FI, Moussouttas M, Lanuzza B, Aricò D, Bagai K, Wang L, McLaughlin B, Walters AS. Oxidative Stress and Inflammation Differentially Elevated in Objective Versus Habitual Subjective Reduced Sleep Duration in Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Conclusions:Even after consideration of obesity and OSA severity, inverse significant findings were observed such that reduced PSG-TST was associated with elevated MPO levels and SR-HSD with ox-LDL, suggesting differential up-regulation of oxidative stress and pathways of inflammation in acute versus chronic sleep curtailment.Clinical Trial Registration:NIH clinical trials registry number NCT00607893.Citation:DeMartino T, Ghoul RE, Wang L, Bena J, Hazen SL, Tracy R, Patel SR, Ackley D, Mehra R. Prevalence and Characteristics of Central Compared to Obstructive Sleep Apnea: Analyses from the Sleep Heart Health Study Cohort
Conclusions:This is the largest community-based study of the prevalence and characteristics of CSA to date and demonstrates a prevalence of CSA that is intermediate to those previously noted. Contrary to prior data from clinic based samples, individuals with heart failure were much more likely to have OSA than CSA.Citation:Donovan LM, Kapur VK. Sleep Apnea and Obstructive Airway Disease in Older Men: Outcomes of Sleep Disorders in Older Men Study
Conclusions:Obstructive airway disease was associated with a lower prevalence of sleep apnea in a cohort of community-dwelling elderly men, and unexplained by differences in adiposity or sleep architecture. Although uncommon in this cohort, coexisting sleep apnea and OAD was associated with increased sleep fragmentation and nocturnal oxygen desaturation compared to OAD alone.Citation:Zhao YY, Blackwell T, Ensrud KE, Stone KL, Omachi TA, Redline S, Osteoporotic Fractures in Men (MrOS) Study Group. Prevalence, Severity, and Prognostic Value of Sleep Apnea Syndromes in Cardiac Amyloidosis
Conclusions: In CA population, prevalence of SDB is high (90%) and dominated by the obstructive pattern. Bad prognosis in this population was driven by nocturnal desaturation, reflecting heart failure severity and respiratory involvement. Current Alcohol Use is Associated with Sleep Patterns in First-Year College Students
Conclusions:Later sleep timing in those with greater alcohol use, supports a connection between sleep patterns and alcohol use. Such an early appearance of this connection may herald the development of alcohol use disorder in some individuals.Citation:Van Reen E, Roane BM, Barker DH, McGeary JE, Borsari B, Carskadon MA. Artificial Outdoor Nighttime Lights Associate with Altered Sleep Behavior in the American General Population
Conclusions:Although they improve the overall safety of people and traffic, nighttime lights in our streets and cities are clearly linked with modifications in human sleep behaviors and also impinge on the daytime functioning of individuals living in areas with greater ONL.Citation:Ohayon MM, Milesi C. Individual Differences in Sleep Timing Relate to Melanopsin-Based Phototransduction in Healthy Adolescents and Young Adults
Conclusions:Trait-like individual differences in the melanopsin phototransduction circuitry contribute to individual differences in sleep timing. Blue light-sensitive young individuals are more prone to delayed sleep.Citation:van der Meijden WP, Van Someren JL; te Lindert BH, Bruijel J, van Oosterhout F, Coppens JE, Kalsbeek A, Cajochen C, Bourgin P, Van Someren EJ. Individual Differences in Animal Stress Models: Considering Resilience, Vulnerability, and the Amygdala in Mediating the Effects of Stress and Conditioned Fear on Sleep
Conclusions:Outbred Wistar rats can show significant individual differences in the effects of stress on REM that are mediated by BLA. These differences in REM can be independent of behavioral fear and the peripheral stress response, and may be an important biomarker of stress resilience and vulnerability.Citation:Wellman LL, Fitzpatrick ME, Hallum OY, Sutton AM, Williams BL, Sanford LD. Impact of Astroglial Connexins on Modafinil Pharmacological Properties
Conclusions:Our study indicates that flecainide impacts the pharmacological effects of modafinil, likely through the normalization of Cx30-dependent gap junctional coupling in astroglial networks. The enhancement of the wake-promoting, behavioral, and cognitive outcomes of modafinil demonstrated here with flecainide would open new perspectives in the management of sleep disorders such as narcolepsy.Commentary:A commentary on this article appears in this issue on page 1175.Citation:Duchêne A, Perier M, Zhao Y, Liu X, Thomasson J, Chauveau F, Piérard C, Lagarde D, Picoli C, Jeanson T, Mouthon F, Dauvilliers Y, G...
