Study on novel, superparamagnetic and biocompatible PEG/KFeO2 nanocomposite
Publication date: Available online 2 June 2014 Source:Journal of Applied Biomedicine Author(s): Lavanya Khanna , Narendra Kumar Verma The present study reports the synthesis of polyethylene glycol (PEG) coated potassium ferrite nanoparticles. X-ray diffraction pattern revealed the formation of orthorhombic structure of KFeO2 nanoparticles, along with additional characteristic peaks of PEG at 2θ ∼19° and 23°. The characteristic IR bands of PEG confirmed its coating thereby making the nanocomposite feasible for bio-conjugation. The coating of PEG on KFeO2 nanoparticles, spherical formation, and reduced agglomerati...

Evaluation of antibacterial activity of hexanedioic acid isolated from Hermetia illucens larvae
This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of a new substance causing antibacterial activity against various pathogenic bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The antibacterial activity of hexanedioic acid was determined using different antimicrobial indicators such as turbidometric assay, resazurin assay, and agar disk diffusion. Hexanedioic acid showed the selective-growth inhibitory effects against the growth and proliferation of Staphylococcus aureus, MRSA, Klebsiella pneumonia, and Shigella dysenteriae in a concentration dependent manner. The growth inhibitory zones of bacteria ...

Identification and characterisation of different proteases in Lucilia sericata medicinal maggots involved in maggot debridement therapy
In conclusion, we identified five novel putative proteases of medicinal maggots and demonstrated that they could be secreted into the wound during the MDT. (Source: Journal of Applied Biomedicine)

Interaction of free radicals of DOPA-melanin-streptomycin complexes with paramagnetic oxygen O2
Publication date: July 2014 Source:Journal of Applied Biomedicine, Volume 12, Issue 3 Author(s): Barbara K. Wiernek , Barbara Pilawa , Magdalena Zdybel , Ewa Buszman , Dorota Wrześniok Oxygen plays an important role in the metabolism of all tissues. The level of oxygen in the environment of melanin biopolymer in human body may change toxic effects resulted from free radicals formation in melanin–drug complexes. Using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy we measured the effect of molecular oxygen on concentration and properties of free radicals in 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine–melanin (DOPA–melani...
