Treatment ‐related changes after short‐term exposure of SD rats to Aloe vera whole‐leaf freeze‐dried powder
Summary Aloe vera is a widely used natural herb from which many sorts of commercial products have been derived using different preparation technologies. Aloe whole‐leaf powder is one of the most popular subtypes. The long‐term impact of aloe products has already been reported; however, there have been few studies about short‐term exposure, and especially about the relative impact of Aloe vera whole‐leaf freeze‐dried powder (AWFP). To provide more toxicological data and to document the early changes induced by AWFP, in this study 120 SD rats were divided into four groups (control and 400/1200/2000 mg/kg treatment...

Effect of tamoxifen on fibrosis, collagen content and transforming growth factor ‐β1, ‐β2 and ‐β3 expression in common bile duct anastomosis of pigs
Summary End‐to‐end anastomosis in the treatment for bile duct injury during laparoscopic cholecystectomy has been associated with stricture formation. The aim of this study was to experimentally investigate the effect of oral tamoxifen (tmx) treatment on fibrosis, collagen content and transforming growth factor‐β1, ‐β2 and ‐β3 expression in common bile duct anastomosis of pigs. Twenty‐six pigs were divided into three groups [sham (n = 8), control (n = 9) and tmx (n = 9)]. The common bile ducts were transected and anastomosed in the control and tmx groups. Tmx (40 mg/day) was administered orally to the...

CXXC5 expression in prostate cancer: implications for cancer progression
Summary Identification of genes specifically deregulated in prostate adenocarcinoma may lead to discovery of new oncogenes/tumour suppressors with clinical relevance for diagnosis, prognosis and/or therapy. CXXC5 is a gene encoding a retinoid‐inducible nuclear factor, whose overexpression in breast tumours, metastatic malignant melanomas and papillary thyroid carcinoma has been recently reported. We previously found differential expression of CXXC5 transcripts in metastatic prostate cancer cell lines of both rat and human origin. However, knowledge on the expression of this gene in benign or malignant human prostate tiss...

Polychlorinated dibenzo ‐p‐dioxins and dibenzofurans levels in piglet liver with various diseases
This study deals with the levels of toxic polychlorinated dibenzo‐p‐dioxin and furan congeners (PCDD/Fs) in the livers of piglets affected by infectious diseases using isotope dilution high‐resolution gas chromatography/high‐resolution mass spectrometry (HRGC/HRMS). Seventeen toxic congeners in the liver samples infected with bacterial and viral diseases were compared. For porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) samples, the North American‐ and European‐type PRRS diseases were observed. This study shows that there are significantly different levels of PCDD/Fs, present, which vary according t...
