Common carotid artery end-diastolic velocity is independently associated with future cardiovascular events
Conclusions Low common carotid EDV and PSV were independently associated with future CVD, and EDV improved the prediction of future CVD. More prospective studies are required in different ethnic groups to understand the significance and implication of these findings. (Source: European Journal of Preventive Cardiology)

Muscle- and skeletal-related side-effects of statins: tip of the iceberg?
The clinical spectrum of muscle- and skeletal-related side-effects of statins includes varied myalgias and weakness, an asymptomatic increase in the concentration of creatine kinase and other biochemical parameters, myositis and rhabdomyolysis. Currently, there is no consensus on the definition of ‘statin myopathy’. Evidence suggests that deleterious effects may also be associated with the volume or dosage of structured exercise and/or the intensity of physical activity. Moreover, non-muscle adverse effects on the joints and tendons are often overlooked and underemphasized. The incidence of myopathy associated ...

Effects of drug and exercise intervention on functional capacity and quality of life in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
Conclusion Our meta-analysis indicates that exercise training may be a therapeutic option to improve functional capacity and QOL in HFpEF patients. (Source: European Journal of Preventive Cardiology)

The combined exercise stress echocardiography and cardiopulmonary exercise test for identification of masked heart failure with preserved ejection fraction in patients with hypertension
Conclusion The combined ESE-CPX test is feasible and reliable test that can unmask HFpEF and may become an important aid in the early diagnosis of HFpEF, excluding the other causes of exertional dyspnoea. (Source: European Journal of Preventive Cardiology)

Heart rate reserve predicts cardiovascular death among physically unfit but otherwise healthy middle-aged men: a 35-year follow-up study
Conclusions Low HRR was independently associated with increased risk of CV death in apparently healthy, middle-aged men. The predictive impact of HRR on CV death risk was, however, confined to unfit men. (Source: European Journal of Preventive Cardiology)

Differential effects of insulin sensitization and insulin provision treatment strategies on concentrations of circulating adipokines in patients with diabetes and coronary artery disease in the BARI 2D trial
Conclusion The IS and IP treatment strategies exerted divergent effects on adipokine and inflammatory profile in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and coronary artery disease. The IS treatment strategy-induced changes may be more favorable than the IP treatment strategy regarding cardiovascular pathophysiology. (Source: European Journal of Preventive Cardiology)

Association of high-density lipoprotein subclasses and incident coronary heart disease: The Jackson Heart and Framingham Offspring Cohort Studies
Conclusion Smaller, denser HDL3-C levels are primarily responsible for the inverse association between HDL-C and incident CHD in this diverse group of primary prevention subjects. These findings have important implications ranging from considerations of HDL biology to interpretations of clinical trials utilizing HDL-C therapeutics. Heart failure is associated with exaggerated endothelial ischaemia-reperfusion injury and attenuated effect of ischaemic preconditioning
Conclusion We found that patients with heart failure are associated with exaggerated endothelial IR-injury compared with age- and sex-matched, healthy controls, which may contribute to the poor clinical prognosis in heart failure. Furthermore, we found no protective effect of ischaemic preconditioning (3 x 5-min forearm ischaemia) against endothelial IR-injury in heart failure patients. Projected age- and sex-specific prevalence of cardiovascular diseases in Western Australian adults from 2005-2045
Conclusions Assuming no major changes in prevention and treatment of CVD, the prevalence will likely increase, with consequent increases in health care need and cost. These findings need to be confirmed by studies in which prevalence is consistently and empirically measured and monitored over time. (Source: European Journal of Preventive Cardiology)

High-intensity interval training is not superior to other forms of endurance training during cardiac rehabilitation
Conclusion Endurance training protocols assessed in this study all led to significant increases in peak work capacity of comparable magnitude. Our findings suggest that these protocols can be used interchangeably, which will lead to further individualization of exercise prescription and may therefore result in improved adherence to lifelong behavioural changes. Physical therapy in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction: A systematic review
About 50% of patients with heart failure (HF) have preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) which is especially common in elderly people with highly prevalent co-morbid conditions. HFpEF is usually defined as an ejection fraction equal to or greater than 50%, although some studies have used a limit as low as 40%. The prevalence of this syndrome is expected to increase over the next decades. The associated impact on mortality and hospital readmissions has made of this entity a major public health issue. Despite the fact that mortality and re-hospitalisation rates of HFpEF are similar to the syndrome of HF with reduced ejection f...
