Prognostic value of the oxygen uptake efficiency slope and other exercise variables in patients with coronary artery disease
Conclusion The oxygen uptake efficiency slope is an independent predictor for all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in patients with coronary artery disease, irrespective of a truly maximal effort during cardiopulmonary exercise tests. Furthermore, the oxygen uptake efficiency slope provides prognostic information, complementary to the minute ventilation/carbon dioxide production slope and peak exercise capacity. Central systolic blood pressure is associated with ethnicity and cardiovascular disease risk factors in Chinese middle-aged population
Conclusions CSBP estimated using the BPro device correlates with various cardiovascular risk factors. Our results may help establish future reference values in the Chinese middle-aged population. (Source: European Journal of Preventive Cardiology)

An updated prediction model of the global risk of cardiovascular disease in HIV-positive persons: The Data-collection on Adverse Effects of Anti-HIV Drugs (D:A:D) study
Conclusions An updated, easily recalibrated, global CVD-risk equation tailored to HIV-positive persons was developed using routinely collected CVD risk parameters and incorporating markers on immune function (CD4 lymphocyte count), and exposure to antiretroviral therapies. The estimated CVD risk can be used to quantify risk and to guide preventive care. (Source: European Journal of Preventive Cardiology)

The predictive role of renal function and systemic inflammation on the onset of de novo atrial fibrillation after cardiac surgery
Conclusions Age and eGFR were identified as the strongest predictors of POAF in a population largely composed of valve surgery patients. Renal function, even from early stage, is independently associated with the increasing risk of developing POAF. (Source: European Journal of Preventive Cardiology)

Inflammatory markers and extent and progression of early atherosclerosis: Meta-analysis of individual-participant-data from 20 prospective studies of the PROG-IMT collaboration
Conclusion Inflammation was independently associated with CCA-IMT cross-sectionally. The lack of clear associations with CCA-IMT progression may be explained by imprecision in its assessment within a limited time period. Our findings for ‘inflammatory load’ suggest important combined effects of the three inflammatory markers on early atherosclerosis. (Source: European Journal of Preventive Cardiology)

Cardiovascular disease risk in women with premature ovarian insufficiency: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusion POI is an independent though modest risk factor of IHD and overall CVD but not of stroke. Because of the limited impact of POI on CVD risk compared to classical cardiovascular risk factors, it is unlikely that POI will be implemented as modifier of cardiovascular risk classification. Shifts in the age distribution and from acute to chronic coronary heart disease hospitalizations
Conclusions An increasing proportion of Dutch CHD hospital admissions was for chronic forms of CHD. The age at hospitalization was pushed towards older age: premature CHD admission declined over time and admission rates at very old age increased. (Source: European Journal of Preventive Cardiology)

Cause-specific mortality and years of life lost in patients with different manifestations of vascular disease
Conclusions Patients with manifest vascular disease are at increased risk of both cardiovascular and cancer mortality, particularly patients with PAD or polyvascular disease. On average, patients with vascular disease of ≥50 years die 7.8 years younger than the general population. (Source: European Journal of Preventive Cardiology)

Coronary calcification among 3477 asymptomatic and symptomatic individuals
Conclusion No difference in the presence or severity of coronary calcifications was observed between asymptomatic and symptomatic middle-aged individuals. Transgenerational effects of parental cardiovascular disease and risk factors on offspring mortality: family-linkage data from the HUNT Study, Norway
Background Cardiovascular risk factors are known to be associated between parents and offspring. However, whether these associations are reflected in increased offspring mortality has not been extensively studied. Design This was a family study of 32,536 father-offspring and 39,614 mother-offspring pairs who participated in the HUNT Study, Norway. Methods Adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) for offspring total and cardiovascular mortality associated with parental levels of cardiovascular disease risk factors were estimated using Cox regression. Results and conclusions Fathers' and mothers' reporting of cardiovascular disease (...

Altered core and skin temperature responses to endurance exercise in heart failure patients and healthy controls
Conclusion Heart failure patients and controls show comparable exercise-induced increase in Tcore, whilst heart failure patients demonstrate altered Tskin responses to exercise and attenuated elevation in Tskin per increase in Tcore. These impaired thermoregulatory responses to exercise are, at least partly, explained by the lower absolute workload and lower physical fitness level in heart failure patients.
