Occult coronary artery disease in middle-aged sportsmen with a low cardiovascular risk score: The Measuring Athletes Risk of Cardiovascular Events (MARC) study
Conclusions Coronary CT detects occult CAD in almost one in five asymptomatic sportsmen aged ≥45 years after a normal SME that included resting and bicycle exercise ECG. CACS reveals most of the relevant CAD with limited additional value of contrast-enhanced CCTA. The NNS in order to prevent one cardiovascular event compares favourably to that of other screening tests. (Source: European Journal of Preventive Cardiology)

Prospective association between a dietary quality index based on a nutrient profiling system and cardiovascular disease risk
Conclusions Our results suggest that poorer food choices, as reflected by a higher FSA-NPS DI, may be associated with a significant increase in cardiovascular risk, especially in at-risk individuals (smokers and physically inactive persons). This score could be a useful tool for public health prevention strategies. Clinical trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT00272428. (Source: European Journal of Preventive Cardiology)

The telephone lifestyle intervention 'Hartcoach has modest impact on coronary risk factors: A randomised multicentre trial
Conclusions Hartcoach has modest impact on BMI, waist circumference, physical activity, intake of vegetables, self-management and anxiety. Therefore, it may be a useful maintenance programme in addition to usual care, to support patients with recent coronary events to improve self-management and reduce risk factors. Cystatin C-based glomerular filtration rate associates more closely with mortality than creatinine-based or combined glomerular filtration rate equations in unselected patients
Conclusions In routine clinical care, cystatin C-based eGFR was more closely associated with mortality compared with both creatinine-based eGFR and creatinine/cystatin C-based eGFR. (Source: European Journal of Preventive Cardiology)

Infections in early life and premature acute coronary syndrome: A case-control study
Conclusion Infections in early life may partly explain premature coronary heart disease in adulthood and may potentiate traditional cardiovascular risk factor effects. (Source: European Journal of Preventive Cardiology)

ST segment/heart rate hysteresis improves the diagnostic accuracy of ECG stress test for coronary artery disease in patients with left ventricular hypertrophy
Conclusions Among currently available ExET diagnostic variables, ST-segment depression/heart rate hysteresis offers a substantially better diagnostic accuracy for coronary artery disease than conventional criteria in patients with hypertension-related left ventricular hypertrophy. Lifestyle and risk factor management in people at high cardiovascular risk from Bulgaria, Croatia, Poland, Romania and the United Kingdom who participated in both the EUROASPIRE III and IV primary care surveys
Conclusions The results from EUROASPIRE III and IV clearly demonstrate that the control of modifiable risk factors in people at high cardiovascular disease risk remains poor. (Source: European Journal of Preventive Cardiology)

Five-year hospitalisations and survival in patients admitted to inpatient cardiac rehabilitation after cardiac surgery
Conclusions The reduction in all-cause mortality at follow-up documented in those patients with severe disability post-surgery who improved after rehabilitation underscores the effectiveness of a comprehensive inpatient cardiac rehabilitation programme and should encourage a more widespread use of rehabilitation early after an acute cardiac event. Muscle electrical stimulation improves neurovascular control and exercise tolerance in hospitalised advanced heart failure patients
Conclusion Functional electrical stimulation improves muscle sympathetic nerve activity and vasoconstriction and increases exercise tolerance, muscle strength and quality of life in hospitalised heart failure patients. These findings suggest that functional electrical stimulation may be useful to hospitalised patients with decompensated chronic heart failure. (Source: European Journal of Preventive Cardiology)

Cost-effectiveness analysis of different systolic blood pressure targets for people with a history of stroke or transient ischaemic attack: Economic analysis of the PAST-BP study
Conclusion Aiming for a systolic blood pressure target of <130 mmHg or lower is cost effective in people who have had a stroke/transient ischaemic attack in the community, but it is difficult to separate out the impact of the lower target from the impact of more active management of blood pressure. Translational and emerging clinical applications of metabolomics in cardiovascular disease diagnosis and treatment
Numerous molecular screening strategies have recently been developed to measure the chemical diversity of a population’s biofluids with the ultimate aim to provide clinicians, medical scientists and epidemiologists with a clearer picture of the presence and severity of cardiovascular disease; prognosis; and response to treatment. Current cardiology practice integrates clinical history and examination with state-of-the-art imaging, invasive measures, and electrical interrogation. Biomarkers in common clinical use are relatively limited to troponin and brain natriuretic peptide, dependent on damage to heart muscle, or ...
