Predictors of exercise capacity following exercise-based rehabilitation in patients with coronary heart disease and heart failure: A meta-regression analysis
Conclusions We found considerable heterogeneity across randomized controlled trials in the magnitude of improvement in exercise capacity following exercise-based rehabilitation compared to control among patients with coronary heart disease or heart failure. Whilst higher exercise intensities were associated with a greater level of post-rehabilitation exercise capacity, there was no strong evidence to support other intervention, patient or trial factors to be predictive. Effect of comprehensive cardiac telerehabilitation on one-year cardiovascular rehospitalization rate, medical costs and quality of life: A cost-effectiveness analysis
Conclusions This paper shows the addition of cardiac telerehabilitation to conventional centre-based cardiac rehabilitation to be more effective and efficient than centre-based cardiac rehabilitation alone. These results are useful for policy makers charged with deciding how limited health care resources should best be allocated in the era of exploding need. Sudden cardiac arrest in sports - need for uniform registration: A Position Paper from the Sport Cardiology Section of the European Association for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation
There are large variations in the incidence, registration methods and reported causes of sudden cardiac arrest/sudden cardiac death (SCA/SCD) in competitive and recreational athletes. A crucial question is to which degree these variations are genuine or partly due to methodological incongruities. This paper discusses the uncertainties about available data and provides comprehensive suggestions for standard definitions and a guide for uniform registration parameters of SCA/SCD. The parameters include a definition of what constitutes an ‘athlete’, incidence calculations, enrolment of cases, the importance of gend...

Data from a nationwide registry on sports-related sudden cardiac deaths in Germany
Conclusions In Germany, the largest proportion of SrSCDs occurs in middle-aged men during recreational sports or non-elite competitive sports. The distribution of cardiac diseases responsible for SrSCD seems to vary among European countries. Our findings may indicate the need for a larger focus on myocarditis prevention in the young as well as widening the screening scope to younger athletes below the ‘elite’ level and to senior athletes. EUROASPIRE IV: A European Society of Cardiology survey on the lifestyle, risk factor and therapeutic management of coronary patients from 24 European countries
Conclusion A large majority of coronary patients do not achieve the guideline standards for secondary prevention with high prevalences of persistent smoking, unhealthy diets, physical inactivity and consequently most patients are overweight or obese with a high prevalence of diabetes. Risk factor control is inadequate despite high reported use of medications and there are large variations in secondary prevention practice between centres. Less than one-half of the coronary patients access cardiac prevention and rehabilitation programmes. All coronary and vascular patients require a modern preventive cardiology programme, ap...

Utility of repeat serum cholesterol measurements for assessment of cardiovascular risk in primary prevention
Conclusions We observed only minor changes of total cholesterol over time. SCORE-estimates using 5- or 10-year-old total cholesterol had a high sensitivity, specificity and test accuracy to identify subjects at high cardiovascular disease risk and resulted in low misclassification rates. Risk of atrial fibrillation in diabetes mellitus: A nationwide cohort study
Conclusion Diabetes is an independent risk factor for developing atrial fibrillation/flutter, most pronounced in young diabetes patients. Routine screening for atrial fibrillation/flutter in diabetes patients might be beneficial and have therapeutic implications, especially in younger diabetes patients. Translational perspective Diabetes increases the risk of developing atrial fibrillation and especially young diabetes patients have a high relative risk. Increased focus on detecting atrial fibrillation in young diabetes patients might prove beneficial, and both anticoagulation treatment and anti-arrhythmic treatment strat...

Interaction of maternal smoking and preterm birth on future risk of maternal cardiovascular disease: A population-based record linkage study
Conclusion Maternal smoking and PTB interact on the additive scale to synergistically increase maternal CVD risks. The interaction was dose-dependent according to both the severity and number of PTBs. (Source: European Journal of Preventive Cardiology)

Association between fine particulate matter exposure and subclinical atherosclerosis: A meta-analysis
Conclusion Our meta-analysis supports a relationship between PM2.5 and subclinical atherosclerosis measured by carotid intima media thickness. We did not find a similar relationship between PM2.5 and arterial calcification or ankle-brachial index, although the number of studies was small. (Source: European Journal of Preventive Cardiology)

Acute effects of Finnish sauna and cold-water immersion on haemodynamic variables and autonomic nervous system activity in patients with heart failure
Conclusions Acute exposure to Finnish sauna and cold-water immersion causes haemodynamic alterations in chronic heart failure patients similarly to control subjects and in particular did not provoke an excessive increase in adrenergic activity or complex arrhythmias. Disability after cardiac surgery is the major predictor of infections occurring in the rehabilitation phase
Conclusions In a large cohort of patients, residual disability after cardiac surgery was the strongest independent predictor of infections. Disability is readily accessible, and can be used to recognize patients at higher risk of infections. The 10.9% rate of major infections observed after discharge from the surgical department confirms the importance of prolonging infection surveillance after discharge from the cardiac surgery department. Validation of a new method for non-invasive assessment of vasomotor function
Conclusions FMS is a reproducible technique, which is able to detect differences in vasomotor function both in a condition associated with endothelial dysfunction and following an acute intervention known to improve endothelial function. This simple technique has potential for accessible assessment of vasomotor function in clinical studies. (Source: European Journal of Preventive Cardiology)

Is an exaggerated blood pressure response to exercise in hypertensive patients a benign phenomenon or a dangerous alarm?
Conclusion Hypertensive response to exercise in patients with untreated stage I essential hypertension is associated with endothelial dysfunction and increased carotid IMT. It seems that this phenomenon is not a benign one but rather a dangerous alarm. (Source: European Journal of Preventive Cardiology)

Comparison of application of different methods to estimate lifetime cardiovascular risk
Conclusions Application of lifetime cardiovascular risk engages greater numbers of individuals at high risk with substantial differences between the different methods available. These differences can have important clinical implications specifically in the percentage of candidates for lifestyle changes and eventually lipid lowering drugs.
