Validation of Fitbit-Flex as a measure of free-living physical activity in a community-based phase III cardiac rehabilitation population
Conclusion Fitbit-Flex is accurate in assessing attainment of physical activity guideline recommendations and is useful for monitoring physical activity in cardiac patients. The device does, however, slightly over-estimate step counts and MVPA. (Source: European Journal of Preventive Cardiology)

Screening for obstructive sleep apnoea in cardiac rehabilitation: A position statement from the Australian Centre for Heart Health and the Australian Cardiovascular Health and Rehabilitation Association
Obstructive sleep apnoea is highly prevalent in acute coronary syndrome patients eligible for enrolment in cardiac rehabilitation programmes. This condition is an independent predictor of increased morbidity and comorbid conditions in the general population and can lead to an increase in major adverse cardiac events such as revascularization, heart failure and hospital readmission in cardiac patients. There is convincing evidence that treatments such as continuous positive airway pressure or mandibular advancement devices can successfully treat obstructive sleep apnoea and these conditions can be improved or negated result...

High-grade carotid artery stenosis: A forgotten area in cardiovascular risk management
Conclusions The clinical event rate was high in patients with high-grade CAS and the management of cardiovascular risk was deficient in all aspects. (Source: European Journal of Preventive Cardiology)

Long term impact of one daily unit of physical exercise at school on cardiovascular risk factors in school children
Conclusion Over a period of 1–2 years, additional physical exercise lessons at school resulted in an improvement of fitness. However, long-term follow-up failed to demonstrate ongoing improvement of performance in the intervention compared with the control group. Nevertheless, the intervention group had lower rates of body mass index above the 90th percentile throughout the entire follow-up. Therefore more physical exercise units at school seem justified. Treatment with oral anticoagulant drugs restrained from patients with atrial fibrillation: An assessment in a geographically well-defined catchment area
Conclusions This is, to our knowledge, the first study to assess the reasons for restraining the use of OAC drugs in a geographically well-defined population including all hospital-based and non-hospital-based healthcare. Applying CHA2DS2-VASc and new strategies for OAC drugs to our study data indicated that between 72 and 88% of all patients with AF are eligible for treatment with OAC drugs. The relationship between resting heart rate and peak VO2: A comparison of atrial fibrillation and sinus rhythm
Conclusions The impact of resting heart rate on exercise capacity differed completely between atrial fibrillation and sinus rhythm, suggesting that heart rate control may need to be managed differently for atrial fibrillation and sinus rhythm, in light of exercise capacity that is related to quality of life and prognosis. Long-term prescription of beta-blocker delays the progression of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction in patients with hypertension: A retrospective observational cohort study
Conclusions Long-term beta-blocker exposure was associated with protective effects in terms of the incidence of new-onset symptomatic HFpEF, LV diastolic dysfunction and LVH, which might be beneficial for the delay of HFpEF progression. (Source: European Journal of Preventive Cardiology)

Management of stable angina: A commentary on the European Society of Cardiology guidelines
In 2013 the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) released new guidelines on the management of stable coronary artery disease. These guidelines update and replace the previous ESC guidelines on the management of stable angina pectoris, issued in 2006. There are several new aspects in the 2013 ESC guidelines compared with the 2006 version. This opinion paper provides an in-depth interpretation of the ESC guidelines with regard to these issues, to help physicians in making evidence-based therapeutic choices in their routine clinical practice. The first new element is the definition of stable coronary artery disease itself, wh...

Do polypills lead to neglect of lifestyle risk factors? Findings from an individual participant data meta-analysis among 3140 patients at high risk of cardiovascular disease
Discussion This analysis allays concern that polypill-based care may lead to neglect of lifestyle risk factors, at least among high-risk patients. Maximally effective preventive approaches should address lifestyle factors alongside pharmaceutical interventions, as recommended by major international guidelines. Does exercise training impact clock genes in patients with coronary artery disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus?
Conclusion This is the first study to analyse clock gene expression in skeletal muscles of patients with CAD and T2DM participating in a long-lasting exercise intervention. ET, as one of the cornerstones in prevention and rehabilitation of CAD and T2DM, exerts no effects on CLOCK genes but meaningful effects on the clock-associated gene ALAS1. Prognostic value of the post-training oxygen uptake efficiency slope in patients with coronary artery disease
Conclusion Post-training OUES has stronger prognostic value compared to baseline OUES. The lack of improvement in exercise capacity expressed by OUES after an exercise training program relates to a worse prognosis and can help distinguish patients with favorable and unfavorable prognoses.
