Prognostic value of serial six-minute walk tests using tele-accelerometry in patients with chronic heart failure: A pre-specified sub-study of the TIM-HF-Trial
Conclusion Tele-6MWT has a high predictive value with respect to hospitalization as a result of HF or death from any cause and the results were comparable with the prognostic impact of a conventional 6MWT. Therefore Tele-6MWT may be used as alternative test method in the home environment. However, there is no added prognostic value of repeating Tele-6MWTs on a monthly basis. Screening for atrial fibrillation during influenza vaccinations by primary care nurses using a smartphone electrocardiograph (iECG): A feasibility study
Conclusions Screening with iECG during influenza vaccination by primary care nurses is feasible and well accepted by practice staff. Addressing barriers is likely to increase uptake. (Source: European Journal of Preventive Cardiology)

eHealth in cardiovascular medicine: A clinical update
This article describes opportunities and challenges of eHealth and telemedicine in the framework of our health systems and, in particular, in the context of today’s cardiology services. The most promising applications of eHealth and telemedicine include: (a) prevention and lifestyle interventions; (b) chronic disease management including hypertension, diabetes and heart failure; (c) arrhythmia detection including early detection of atrial fibrillation and telemonitoring of devices such as pacemaker, internal cardioverter defibrillators and implantable rhythm monitoring devices; (d) telerehabilitation. Major obstacles...

Acute myocardial infarction in a young bodybuilder taking anabolic androgenic steroids: A case report and critical review of the literature
We describe a case report of a 30-year-old bodybuilder suffering acute myocardial infarction (AMI). He had been taking stanozolol and testosterone for two months. The coronary angiogram showed high thrombotic burden in the left anterior descending artery without underlying atherosclerosis. Few case reports of AMI in athletes taking anabolic androgenic steroids (AASs) have been reported so far. AAS-related AMI is possibly underreported in the medical literature due to the desire of the affected individuals to hide AAS use. Physicians should always consider the possibility of AAS abuse in the context of a young athlete suffe...

Disease burden of ischaemic heart disease from short-term outdoor air pollution exposure in Tianjin, 2002-2006
Conclusions Short-term exposure to air pollution has a significant impact on ischaemic heart disease years of life lost and mortality in Tianjin, particularly among women. Air quality improvement has become necessary to protect public health. (Source: European Journal of Preventive Cardiology)

A comparison of the prevalence and clustering of major cardiovascular risk factors in the Netherlands and China
Conclusions Cardiovascular risk profiles and clustering patterns differ between the Dutch and the Chinese and seem to differ between men and women. This calls for race and sex-specific targeted prevention programmes. (Source: European Journal of Preventive Cardiology)

Parity, breastfeeding and risk of coronary heart disease: A pan-European case-cohort study
Conclusion Having more children was associated with a higher risk of CHD later in life, whereas breastfeeding was associated with a lower CHD risk. Women who both had children and breastfed did have a non-significantly higher risk of CHD. (Source: European Journal of Preventive Cardiology)

Higher education is associated with reduced risk of heart failure among patients with acute myocardial infarction: A nationwide analysis using data from the CVDNOR project
Conclusions We observed an inverse association between educational level and risk of HF. More efforts in preventing this severe complication of AMI among less educated patients may help to reduce the socioeconomic gap in survival following coronary events. Energy expenditure estimation in beta-blocker-medicated cardiac patients by combining heart rate and body movement data
Conclusions Our results show that combining HR and body movement data improves the accuracy of energy expenditure prediction models in cardiac patients, similar to methods that have been developed for healthy subjects. The proposed methodology does not require individual calibration and is based on the data that are available in clinical practice. (Source: European Journal of Preventive Cardiology)

A review of guidelines for cardiac rehabilitation exercise programmes: Is there an international consensus?
Conclusion Higher-intensity aerobic training programmes, supplemented by resistance training, have been recommended and deemed safe for cardiac rehabilitation patients by many authorities. Based on research evidence, this may also provide superior outcomes for patients and should therefore be considered when developing an international consensus for exercise prescription in cardiac rehabilitation. The blood pressure-lowering effect of a single bout of resistance exercise: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials
Conclusion A single bout of resistance exercise can have a BP-lowering effect that last for up to 24 hours. Supine recovery and the use of larger muscle groups resulted in greater BP reductions after resistance exercise. (Source: European Journal of Preventive Cardiology)

Attenuated IGF-1 predicts all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in a Black population: A five-year prospective study
Conclusion In a Black South African population with low socio-economic status and harmful health behaviours, we found a protective independent association between IGF-1 and hypertension, cardiovascular and all-cause mortality, with no association with carotid wall thickness.
