Chemotherapy ‐induced nausea and vomiting is less controlled at delayed phase in patients with esophageal cancer: a prospective registration study by the CINV Study Group of Japan
Summary Chemotherapy is an indispensable therapeutic approach for esophageal cancer. Although chemotherapy‐induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) is one of the most crucial adverse events, the current state of CINV in patients with esophageal cancer remains unclear. This multicenter prospective observational study analyzed data for 192 patents with esophageal cancer who underwent moderately emetogenic chemotherapy (MEC) or highly emetogenic chemotherapy (HEC). The patients recorded their CINV incidence and severity daily for 7 days after receiving chemotherapy, using visual analog scales (VAS). Of the 192 patients, 181 recei...

Prediction of disease ‐free survival using relative change in FDG‐uptake early during neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy for potentially curable esophageal cancer: A prospective cohort study
Summary 18F‐Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG‐PET) has been investigated as a tool for monitoring response to neoadjuvant chemo‐ and chemoradiotherapy (CT and CRT, respectively) and as a predictor for survival in patients with esophageal cancer. In contrast to patients who undergo neoadjuvant CT, it is not known whether patients who are clinically identified as responders after neoadjuvant CRT show better disease‐free survival (DFS) than patients identified as nonresponders. The aim of the study was to determine the predictive value of FDG‐uptake measured prior to and early during neoadjuvant C...

Assessment of the incidence of squamous cell papilloma of the esophagus and the presence of high ‐risk human papilloma virus
Conclusions: The incidence of esophageal papilloma has increased by fourfolds over the past 14 years. About half of the tested patients demonstrated high risk HPV. This may suggest a potential growing risk for esophageal squamous cell cancer in the future. (Source: Diseases of the Esophagus)

Simultaneous esophagectomy and off ‐pump coronary artery bypass grafting: a practicable approach with good survival
We reported, here, the first case series of esophageal cancer patients treated with simultaneous esophagectomy and off‐pump coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). From August 2010 to August 2012, 2154 esophageal or esophageal gastric junction (EGJ) cancer patients underwent surgical treatment in Tangdu Hospital, Xi'an, China. Among them, six patients with esophageal or EGJ esophageal gastric junction cancer complicated with CAD were given simultaneous esophagectomy and off‐pump CABG, and were followed up until August 2014. Four patients were operated through left lateral thoracotomy and two patients were operated thro...

Early‐stage adenocarcinoma of the esophagus with mid to deep submucosal invasion (pT1b sm2‐3): the frequency of lymph‐node metastasis depends on macroscopic and histological risk patterns
Summary The rate of lymph‐node (LN) metastasis in early adenocarcinoma (EAC) of the esophagus with mid to deep submucosal invasion (pT1b sm2/3) has not yet been precisely defined. The aim of the this study was to evaluate the rate of LN metastasis in pT1b sm2/3 EAC depending on macroscopic and histological risk patterns to find out whether there may also be options for endoscopic therapy as in cancers limited to the mucosa and the upper third of the submucosa. A total of 1.718 pt with suspicion of EAC were referred for endoscopic treatment (ET) to the Dept. of Internal Medicine II at HSK Wiesbaden 1996–2010. In 230/1.7...

Current status of laparoscopic transhiatal esophagectomy for esophageal cancer patients: a systematic review of the literature
Summary Minimally invasive techniques in transhiatal esophagectomy (THE) were introduced to reduce morbidity and enhance postoperative recovery. Aim of this study was to systematically review the current status and possible beneficial effects of the minimally invasive approach in THE. A systematic search was performed in PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and Embase to identify English articles published on laparoscopic THE. Comparative cohort studies were included for critical appraisal. Data describing perioperative and oncological outcomes were analyzed. A total of four comparative cohort studies that compared laparoscopic T...

Variation in palliative care of esophageal cancer in clinical practice: factors associated with treatment decisions
In conclusion, the initial palliative approach of patients with inoperable esophageal cancer varies widely and is not only associated with patient‐ and disease‐related factors, but also with hospital of diagnosis. These findings suggest a lack of therapeutic guidance and highlight the need for more evidence on palliative care strategies for esophageal cancer. (Source: Diseases of the Esophagus)

Management and outcome of cervical versus intrathoracic manifestation of cervical anastomotic leakage after transthoracic esophagectomy for cancer
Summary The aim of this study was to evaluate management strategies and related outcomes for cervical versus intrathoracic manifestation of cervical anastomotic leakage after transthoracic esophagectomy for cancer with gastric conduit reconstruction. Patients with esophageal cancer undergoing transthoracic esophagectomy with cervical anastomosis from October 2003 to December 2014 were identified from a prospectively acquired database. Management strategies and related outcomes among patients with anastomotic leakage confined to the neck were compared to patients with intrathoracic manifestation of anastomotic leakage. From...

Comparison of neoadjuvant chemotherapy versus upfront surgery with or without chemotherapy for patients with clinical stage III esophageal squamous cell carcinoma
Summary Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) and chemoradiotherapy have been shown to extend postoperative survival, and preoperative therapy followed by esophagectomy has become the standard treatment worldwide for patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). The Japan Clinical Oncology Group 9907 study showed that NAC significantly extended survival in advanced ESCC, but the survival benefit for patients with clinical stage III disease remains to be elucidated. We compared the survival rates of NAC and upfront surgery in patients with clinical stage III ESCC. Consecutive patients histologically diagnosed as clinica...

Preoperative functional status is not associated with postoperative surgical complications in low risk patients undergoing esophagectomty
Summary Preoperative functional status is a risk factor for developing postoperative complications (POC) in major abdominal and thoracic surgery, but this has hardly been evaluated in esophageal cancer patients undergoing esophagectomy. The aim of this prospective cohort study was to determine if preoperative functional status in esophageal cancer patients is associated with POC. From March 2012 to October 2014, esophageal cancer patients scheduled for esophagectomy at the outpatient clinic of a large tertiary referral center were eligible for the study. We measured inspiratory muscle strength, hand grip strength, physical...

Updated incidence rates and risk factors of esophageal cancer in Nan'ao Island, a coastal high‐risk area in southern China
Summary Esophageal cancer (EC) is one of the most common cancers in China. The purpose of this study was to investigate the updated incidence rates and risk factors of EC in Nan'ao Island, where the EC incidence rate was chronically the highest in southern China. To calculate the annual incidence rate, data on 338 EC cases from Nan'ao Cancer Registry system diagnosed during 2005–2011 were collected. A case‐control study was conducted to explore the EC risk factors. One hundred twenty‐five alive EC patients diagnosed during 2005–2011 and 250 controls were enrolled into the case‐control study. A pre‐test question...
