Alginate therapy is effective treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease symptoms: a systematic review and meta ‐analysis
Summary In patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and erosive esophagitis, treatment with proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) is highly effective. However, in some patients, especially those with non‐erosive reflux disease or atypical GERD symptoms, acid suppressive therapy with PPIs is not as successful. Alginates are medications that work through an alternative mechanism by displacing the post‐prandial gastric acid pocket. We performed a systematic review and meta‐analysis to examine the benefit of alginate‐containing compounds in the treatment of patients with symptoms of GERD.PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase and ...

Outcome and risk factors assessment for adverse events in advanced esophageal cancer patients after self ‐expanding metal stents placement
Summary Self‐expanding metal stents (SEMS) are the treatment of choice for advanced esophageal cancers. Literature is scarce on risk factors predictors for adverse events after SEMS placement. Assess risk factors for adverse events after SEMS placement in advanced esophageal cancer and evaluate survival after SEMS placement. Cross‐sectional study of patients with advanced esophageal cancer referred for SEMS placement, during a period of 3 years. Ninety‐seven patients with advanced esophageal cancer placed SEMS. Adverse events were more common when tumors were located at the level of the distal esophagus/cardia (47% v...

Complications of botulinum toxin injections for treatment of esophageal motility disorders †
Summary In achalasia and spastic esophageal motility disorders, botulinum toxin (botox) injection is considered an effective and low‐risk procedure for short‐term symptom relief. It is mainly offered to medically high‐risk patients. However, no analysis of risks of botox injections has been performed. To determine the incidence and risk factors of procedure‐related complications after esophageal botox injections, we analyzed the records of all patients undergoing botox injection therapy for esophageal motility disorders at four university hospitals in Europe and North America between 2008 and 2014. Complications we...

Long noncoding RNA H19 is up ‐regulated in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and promotes cell proliferation and metastasis
Summary Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been shown to play various roles in tumorigenesis, among which lncRNA H19 has been revealed as an ambivalent factor that acts as both an oncogene and a tumor suppressor in carcinogenesis. However, the exact biological role of H19 in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remains to be determined. The aim of this study was to examine the expression pattern of H19 in ESCC and evaluate its biological role and clinical significance in the progression of ESCC. Expression of H19 was analyzed in 64 ESCC tissues and four ESCC cell lines by quantitative reverse‐transcription polymeras...

Persistence of dysphagia and odynophagia after mediastinal radiation and chemotherapy in patients with lung cancer or lymphoma
Summary Esophageal symptoms are common during radiation and chemotherapy. It is unclear how often these symptoms persist after therapy. We retrospectively reviewed medical records of 320 adults treated for nonmetastatic breast cancer (84), lung cancer (109), or Hodgkin and non‐Hodgkin lymphoma (127) who were disease‐free at 10–14 months after therapy. Treatment included chemotherapy with or without nonmediastinal radiation therapy (150 patients), chemotherapy plus sequential mediastinal radiation therapy (MRT) (48 patients), chemotherapy plus concurrent MRT (61 patients), or non‐MRT only (61 patients). Proton pump ...

Effect of body mass index on operative outcome after robotic ‐assisted Ivor‐Lewis esophagectomy: retrospective analysis of 129 cases at a single high‐volume tertiary care center
We examined the short‐term operative outcomes in patients according to their body mass index following robotic‐assisted Ivor‐Lewis esophagectomy at a high‐volume tertiary‐care referral cancer center and evaluated the safety of robotic surgery in patients with an elevated body mass index. A retrospective review of all patients who underwent robotic‐assisted Ivor‐Lewis esophagectomy between April 2010 and June 2013 for pathologically confirmed distal esophageal cancer was conducted. Patient demographics, clinicopathologic data, and operative outcomes were collected. We stratified body mass index at admission fo...

Adenocarcinoma risk in patients registered with polish barrett's oesophagus registry
Summary Barrett's Oesophagus (BO) is a complication of chronic gastro‐oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) and is a major risk factor for oesophageal adenocarcinoma. Current guidelines are based on data showing a 0.5% annual malignancy progression rate. The Polish Barrett's Oesophagus Registry (POBOR) was established to characterize Polish patients with BO and estimate the risk of malignant progression. POBOR was established in 1999 after a dedicated training of endoscopists and histopathologists. Physicians registered patients using a dedicated registry form. After excluding patients known to have endoscopic treatment for ...

Intraoperative and postoperative risk factors for anastomotic leakage and pneumonia after esophagectomy for cancer
This study aimed to assess the relationship of intraoperative and postoperative vital parameters with anastomotic leakage and pneumonia after esophagectomy. Consecutive patients who underwent transthoracic esophagectomy with cervical anastomosis for esophageal cancer from January 2012 to December 2013 were analyzed. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to determine potential associations of hemodynamic and respiratory parameters with anastomotic leakage or pneumonia. From a total of 82 included patients, 19 (23%) developed anastomotic leakage and 31 (38%) experienced pneumonia. The single in...
