Reduced toxicity with three‐dimensional conformal radiotherapy or intensity‐modulated radiotherapy compared with conventional two‐dimensional radiotherapy for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma: a secondary analysis of data from four prospective clinical trials
Summary We conducted a retrospective analysis to assess the toxicity and long‐term survival of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma patients treated with three‐dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3DCRT) or intensity‐modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) versus conventional two‐dimensional radiotherapy (2DRT). All data in the present study were based on four prospective clinical trials conducted at our institution from 1996 to 2004 and included 308 esophageal squamous cell carcinoma patients treated with 2DRT or 3DCRT/IMRT. Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 254 patients were included in the analysis. Of these pat...

Aspirin prevents atrophy of esophageal nitrergic myenteric neurons in a mouse model of chronic Chagas disease
This study evaluated the effects of treatment of Chagas disease with ASA on the esophageal nitrergic myenteric neuron population and esophageal wall in mice. We observed that treatment of chagasic infection with ASA protects the esophageal myenteric neurons from the atrophy caused by the Trypanosoma cruzi infection. The mice were infected with 1300 trypomastigotes of Y strain T. cruzi intraperitoneally. Part of infected mice was treated with ASA from fifth to twelfth day after inoculation. Our data support the hypothesis that eicosanoids given during the acute phase of the chagasic infection may act as immunomodulators aid...

Laparoscopic alternatives to fundoplication for gastroesophageal reflux: the role of magnetic augmentation and electrical stimulation of the lower esophageal sphincter
Summary Reflux symptoms are very common, and despite modern medication they are a major cause of disease burden and loss of quality of life worldwide. Laparoscopic anti‐reflux surgery is the only current effective alternative but suffers from the risks of long‐term side effects. Surgery also suffers variation in standards and outcomes. Magnetic augmentation and electrical stimulation of the lower esophageal sphincter represent promising innovative procedures in the field. (Source: Diseases of the Esophagus)

Adjuvant sunitinib following chemoradiotherapy and surgery for locally advanced esophageal cancer: a phase II trial
Summary The prognosis for locally advanced esophageal cancer is poor despite the use of trimodality therapy. In this phase II study, we report the feasibility, tolerability and efficacy of adjuvant sunitinib. Included were patients with stage IIa, IIB or III cancer of the thoracic esophagus or gastroesophageal junction. Neoadjuvant therapy involved Irinotecan (65 mg/m2) + Cisplatin (30 mg/m2) on weeks 1 and 2, 4 and 5, 7 and 8 with concurrent radiation (50Gy/25 fractions) on weeks 4–8. Sunitinib was commenced 4–13 weeks after surgery and continued for one year. Sixty‐one patients were included in the final analys...
