Helicobacter pylori infection and gastroesophageal reflux in children
Summary Some studies suggest that Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection would be a protective factor for the gastroesophageal reflux. The aim of this study was to explore this fact. A group of 72 children, admitted in a pediatric gastroenterology regional center in Northeast Romania, diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux by 24‐hour continuous esophageal pH monitoring (results were interpreted using the Boix‐Ochoa score), underwent upper endoscopy with gastric biopsy to detect the presence of H. pylori by the rapid urease testing and for bacteriological and histologic examination. 19 children (26.39%) had H. ...

Genotypes of CYP1A1,  SULT1A1 and SULT1A2 and risk of squamous cell carcinoma of esophagus: outcome of a case–control study from Kashmir, India
Summary Studies on associations of various polymorphism in xenobiotic metabolizing genes with different cancers including esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) are mixed and inconclusive. To evaluate the association of CYP1A1*4, SULT1A1*2 and SULT1A2*2 genotypes with ESCC risk and their modifying effects on different risk factors of ESCC, we conducted a case–control study in Kashmir, India, an area with relative high incidence of ESCC. We recruited 404 histopathologically confirmed ESCC cases, and equal number of controls, individually matched for sex, age and district of residence to respective case. Information w...

Heller's myotomy and pneumatic dilatation in the treatment of achalasia: a population‐based case–control study assessing long‐term quality of life
SummaryLong‐term health‐related quality‐of‐life (HRQL) outcomes have not been widely reported in the treatment of achalasia. The aims of this study were to examine long‐term disease‐specific and general HRQL in achalasia patients using a population‐based case–control method, and to assess HRQL between treatment interventions. Manometrically diagnosed achalasia cases (n = 120) were identified and matched with controls (n = 115) using a population‐based approach. Participants completed general (SF‐12) and disease‐specific (Achalasia Severity Questionnaire [ASQ]) HRQL questionnaires, as appropriate, in a...

Role of definitive chemoradiotherapy using docetaxel and 5‐fluorouracil in patients with unresectable locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma: a phase II study
Summary Definitive chemoradiotherapy (CRT) with docetaxel (DOC) and 5‐fluorouracil (5‐FU) is a unique regimen for esophageal cancer. In this prospective phase II study, antitumor effect and safety of CRT using DOC and 5‐FU for inoperable locally advanced esophageal cancer were evaluated. DOC 7.5 mg/m2 was infused on days 1, 8, 22, and 29. 5‐FU 250 mg/m2/day was infused continuously on days 1–5, 8–12, 15–19, 22–26, 29–33, 36–40, and 43–45. Radiotherapy was given to 66 Gy in 33 fractions. Eleven patients with thoracic and five with cervical esophageal cancer were eligible. All patients had esophag...

Toward improved survivorship: supportive care needs of esophageal cancer patients, a literature review
Summary The growing prevalence of esophageal cancer survivors represent a population typified by an extensive treatment regime, significant postsurgical long‐term effects, and a dismal prognosis. Despite this, little is known of the supportive care needs of this patient group and the extent to which these are being met in practice. This review provides a synthesis of the research evidence to date; emphasizing opportunities for clinical application and setting a future agenda with research priorities. A literature search was performed using Medline/Embase, PsycINFO, and Web of Science. Search headings used included; [esop...

Landscape of expression profiles in esophageal carcinoma by The Cancer Genome Atlas data
In this study, we explored the gene and microRNA (miRNA) expressions profile of esophageal carcinoma. The expression data for messenger RNAs and miRNAs in normal and cancerous esophageal tissues were obtained from the Cancer Genome Atlas database and then the differentially expressed genes and miRNAs were identified. As a result, we identified 2962 genes and 45 miRNAs differentially expressed in esophageal carcinoma compared with normal esophageal tissues. Subsequently, the altered gene functions and signaling pathways were investigated using gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analyses, a...
