Utility of dysphagia grade in predicting endoscopic ultrasound T‐stage of non‐metastatic esophageal cancer
Summary Patients with non‐metastatic esophageal cancer routinely undergo endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) for loco‐regional staging. Neoadjuvant therapy is recommended for ≥T3 tumors while upfront surgery can be considered for ≤T2 lesions. The aim of this study was to determine if the degree of dysphagia can predict the EUS T‐stage of esophageal cancer. One hundred eleven consecutive patients with non‐metastatic esophageal cancer were retrospectively reviewed from a database. Prior to EUS, patients' dysphagia grade was recorded. Correlation between dysphagia grade and EUS T‐stage, especially in reference to predic...

Clinical significance of preoperative and postoperative cytokeratin 19 messenger RNA level in peripheral blood of esophageal cancer patients
Summary The purpose of this study is to analyze the correlation between preoperative/postoperative Cytokeratin 19 (CK19) messenger RNA (mRNA) level in peripheral blood (PB) and the clinical significance in esophageal cancer patients with different clinicopathological factors. We detected the preoperative and postoperative CK19 mRNA level in the PB of 139 esophageal cancer patients who underwent complete resection and evaluated its clinical significance. We found that both the preoperative and postoperative CK19 mRNA level increased in the esophageal cancer patients with lymph node metastasis, relapse or distant metasta...

Grade of eosinophilia versus symptoms in patients with dysphagia and esophageal eosinophilia
This study included newly diagnosed (n = 58) or relapsed patients (n = 7), where 40% were diagnosed in connection with esophageal bolus impaction. The mean age was 45 years (19–88), and 74% were men. Symptoms and HRQL were recorded using the Watson Dysphagia Scale (WDS), the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire – Oesophageal Module 18 and the Short Form‐36 Questionnaire. Histological samples gathered from the proximal and distal esophageal mucosa were stained using both hematoxylin and eosin (HE) and an immunohistochemical (IHC) technique against ‘Eosinophil Major...

Simple antireflux technique for the cologastric anastomosis: complementary step in retrosternal colon interposition procedure
Summary Gastrocolic reflux is a troublesome symptom causing repeated aspiration or chocking in patients underwent retrosternal colon interposition. Various techniques were described to avoid such complication, however, they entail complicated technique that may jeopardize the viability of the graft or cause obstructing symptoms. A simple antireflux procedure is described here alleviating this problem. Over the last 7 years, 87 patients had gastrocolic antireflux procedure for cologastric anastomosis; 75 patients as a primary procedure (group 1) and 12 patients as a secondary procedure treating symptomatic reflux (group 2)....

Circumferential cryoablation in a strictured esophagus: a feasibility and dose‐finding study in a porcine model after inducing stenosis by endoscopic mucosal resection
SummaryIn the treatment of early esophageal Barrett's neoplasia, radiofrequency ablation may be hindered by stenosis due to prior endoscopic resection (ER). The flexible balloon‐based circumferential CryoBalloon Ablation System (CBAS) may overcome this problem by the conformability of the compliant balloon which might enable circumferential cryoablation in a stenosis. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the feasibility of the CBAS as well as the dose–response effect of cryoablation in a strictured esophagus model. In six pigs, a stenosis was induced by ER (3 cm in length, 75% of circumference) in the proxima...
