Lumpectomy Margins: Everything Old is New Again?
The controversy on the optimal width of tumor resection margins following breast conserving surgery is as old as the procedure itself. Even from the time of inception of this procedure, two divergent approaches emerged, the procedure of lumpectomy, as pioneered and evaluated in the US by the NSABP B-06 and subsequent clinical trials1-3 and the procedure of quadrantectomy, as pioneered and evaluated in Italy by the Milan group.4,5 These two procedures were diametrically opposed on their approach to the width of lumpectomy margins. Transumbilical Single-Access Laparoscopic Left Adrenalectomy For Giant Malignant Pheocromocytoma
Background: Malignant adrenal gland pheocromocytoma is a rare disorder and frequently the malignancy is only confirmed by pathology after surgery. Recently, single-access laparoscopy (SAL) has been reported for adrenalectomy, and its feasibilty regards overall patients with BMI (Source: Surgical Oncology)

Clinical effectiveness of neoadjuvant chemotherapy in advanced gastric cancer: an updated meta-analysis of 12 randomized controlled trials
Patients with locally advanced gastric cancer (AGC) have a poor outcome. However, the efficacy of neoadjuvant chemotherapy(NAC) for improvement of survival and prognosis is still controversial and no definite conclusion has been drawn from randomized controlled trials (RCTs).We performed an updated meta-analysis to assess the efficacy and safety of NAC in the treatment of AGC. Lentinan reduces tumor progression by enhancing gemcitabine chemotherapy in urothelial bladder cancer
It has been shown that chemotherapy has limited antitumor activity against advanced urothelial bladder cancer (UBC). Consequently, there is an urgent need to develop effective therapeutic methods for patients with advanced UBC. In the present study, the inhibitory effects of lentinan alone, gemcitabine alone, or lentinan combined with gemcitabine on the proliferation of the UBC cell line, T24, were investigated. The 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide assay, annexin V fluorescein isothiocyanate/propidium iodide staining, and flow cytometry were used to determine the proliferation and apoptosis of ...

Outcomes of gastric cancer resections performed in a high volume Community Cancer Center
Large University Hospitals are usually the referral centers for complex surgical procedures. However, the majority of cancer care takes place in the community hospital. The aim of this study was to analyze the morbidity, mortality and long-term survival of gastric cancer patients after the establishment of a multidisciplinary gastric cancer team in an academic community hospital. Outcomes after resection of leiomyosarcomas of the Inferior Vena Cava: A pooled data analysis of 377 cases
Primary leiomyosarcomas of the inferior vena cava (IVC) pose unique surgical challenges. Due to the rarity of the disease, little definitive data exists on prognosis and treatment options. (Source: Surgical Oncology)

Diagnostic accuracy of CT in assessing extra-regional lymphadenopathy in pancreatic and peri-ampullary cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Computed tomography (CT) is the most widely used method to assess resectability of pancreatic and peri-ampullary cancer. One of the contra-indications for curative resection is the presence of extra-regional lymph node metastases. This meta-analysis investigates the accuracy of CT in assessing extra-regional lymph node metastases in pancreatic and peri-ampullary cancer. (Source: Surgical Oncology)

Short-course preoperative radiotherapy with immediate surgery versus long-course chemoradiation with delayed surgery in the treatment of rectal cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Long-course chemoradiotherapy (LCRT) with delayed surgery or short-course radiotherapy (SCRT) with immediate surgery is probably the most frequent regimen in the treatment of rectal cancer. Debate is still going on whether SCRT or LCRT is more effective. So we performed this meta-analysis to evaluate the safety and efficacy of SCRT with immediate surgery versus LCRT with delayed surgery for the management of rectal cancer. (Source: Surgical Oncology)
