Acute resection versus bridge to surgery with diverting colostomy for patients with acute malignant left sided colonic obstruction: systematic review and meta-analysis
Currently, no consensus exists on the best treatment strategy for acute malignant left-sided colonic obstruction. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to compare the outcomes following the two surgical treatment options; primary resection versus colostomy creation as bridge to surgery. Increased Visceral to Subcutaneous Fat Ratio is Associated with Decreased Overall Survival in Patients with Metastatic Melanoma Receiving Anti-Angiogenic Therapy
Body fat distribution is an emerging prognostic indicator in patients treated with anti-angiogenic (AA) therapy. We sought to evaluate the association of visceral and subcutaneous fat with progression free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) in patients with metastatic melanoma treated with AA therapy. Rising incidence and aggressive nature of cutaneous malignancies after transplantation: An update on epidemiology, risk factors, management and surveillance
Although immunosuppression has been a key component to the success of solid-organ transplantation, the morbidity associated with long-term immunosuppression remains a substantial burden, particularly as recipients of transplants live longer. Indeed, malignancy is one of the most common reasons for mortality following transplantation and the most common of these cancers are cutaneous in origin. Recently, the incidence of these malignancies has been on the rise, partly due to the fact that recipients of these transplants are living longer as a result of improvements in surgical technique, immunosuppression and perioperative ...

Prophylactic salpingectomy and prophylactic salpingoophorectomy for adnexal high-grade serous epithelial carcinoma: A reappraisal
At present, there is no effective screening of ovarian cancer. Primary prevention may be the only strategy to decrease the mortality from ovarian cancer, not only in women at high risk but also at low risk.Several recent studies have identified the distal fimbriae end of the fallopian tubes as primary precursor of High-grade serous carcinoma. Serous tubal intraepithelial carcinomas and occult invasive serous carcinomas have been identified in 2-17% of the fallopian tubes of BRCA 1/2 positive women undergoing risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy. The isoattenuating pancreatic adenocarcinoma: Review of the literature and critical analysis
Dynamic CT has a reported sensitivity of as high as 97% in the detection of pancreatic cancer. Consequently, a substantial number of pancreatic tumors can still escape detection. The isoattenuating pancreatic adenocarcinoma is defined as a mass not directly visible on dynamic CT as its attenuation is indistinguishable from the attenuation of the pancreatic parenchyma. 88% and 100% of the isoattenuating adenocarcinomas 20 mm respectively are recognized only by the presence of secondary imaging findings highly suggestive of malignancy. Prognostic value of survivin expression in stage III non-small cell lung cancer patients treated with platinum-based therapy
This study examines the correlation between tumor survivin expression before and after chemoradiation therapy, therapeutic response, and prognosis in stage III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients who were treated with platinum-based chemoradiation therapy and surgery. Predictive value of nodule size and differentiation in HCC recurrence after liver transplantation
In this study, we evaluate the survival and recurrence in a cohort of patients undergoing LT for HCC fulfilling “Milan Criteria” (MC) pre-LT. In this study, we propose the development of a new prognostic score which could improve the accuracy in predicting recurrence post-LT. (Source: Surgical Oncology)

Survival Rate Comparisons Amongst Cervical Cancer Patients Treated with an Open, Robotic-Assisted or Laparoscopic Radical Hysterectomy: A Five Year Experience
The purpose of this retrospective study was to assess the 5-year survival outcomes of cervical cancer patients who underwent an open, laparoscopic or robotic-assisted radical hysterectomy for the treatment of their disease. (Source: Surgical Oncology)

Prognostic implications of extranodal extension in node-positive squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the vulva is the fourth most common gynecological cancer, usually staged with the TNM or FIGO systems. Since 2009, FIGO staging has taken the extranodal extension (ENE) of lymph node metastases into account.ENE is defined as the spread of a lymph node metastasis into surrounding soft tissue. Although the TNM and FIGO systems acknowledge the importance of ENE in SCC, no comprehensive studies have analyzed the prognostic impact of this parameter. We therefore queried the PubMed and SCOPUS databases from their inception up until 04/01/2015, adopting no language restrictions: all prospective st...

Update for ASCO 2015 Sarcoma Sessions
There were over 75 oral or poster presentations in last Spring's American Society for Clinical Oncology (ASCO) sarcoma sessions. These presentations included investigations studying new medical therapy regimens for soft tissue sarcoma (STS) patients with advanced disease, research studies on the relative value of aggressive local therapies for certain histologies of STS, and innovative investigations evaluating prognostic (and potentially therapeutic) implications of next generation sequencing of tumors and circulating tumor DNA.
