Prognostic significance of TBL1XR1 in predicting liver metastasis for early stage colorectal cancer
Liver metastasis is the leading cause of lethal colorectal cancer (CRC). For patients with early stage CRC, metachronous liver metastasis is the primary risk for poor prognosis. Accordingly, identification of prospective biomarkers for metachronous liver metastasis would be invaluable in evaluating patients' clinical outcomes and developing personal treatment therapy. Applicability of endoscopic submucosal dissection for undifferentiated early gastric cancer: Mixed histology of poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma and signet ring cell carcinoma is a worse predictive factor of nodal metastasis
Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is not considered an appropriate treatment for undifferentiated early gastric cancer (UEGC) due to the higher risk of nodal metastases. We aimed to investigate predictive factors for nodal metastases in UEGCs, determine whether the tumor histology is an independent factor for it, and explore whether ESD is applicable for UEGC. Comment on: Prognostic factors and adjuvant therapy on survival in early-stage cervical adenocarcinoma/adenosquamous carcinoma after primary radical surgery: A Taiwanese Gynecologic Oncology Group (TGOG) study
The standardization of risk groups based on prognostic criteria for patients with cervical cancer (adenocarcinoma/adenosquamous) in early stages submitted to surgical treatment, mainly if they can be used as a parameter for the indication of adjuvant treatment need, can contribute a lot in the treatment of oncological patients. In these settings, we have read with great interest the recently article published by Nae-Fang Twu et  al. in the Surgical Oncology [1]. Prognostic factors and adjuvant therapy on survival in early-stage cervical adenocarcinoma/adenosquamous carcinoma after primary radical surgery: A Taiwanese Gyne...

Management of para-aortic lymph node metastasis in colorectal patients: A systemic review
Para-aortic lymph node (PALN) involvement occurs in up to 2% of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. While resection for isolated hepatic and pulmonary metastases in colorectal cancer is standard practice, the role of PALN dissection (PALND) in CRC has not been established and remains a controversy. We aim to perform a systematic review of the literature to determine if extensive lymphadenectomy improves survival, and is an acceptable strategy for PALN metastasis (PALNM). Reply: Prognostic factors and impact of adjuvant therapy on survival in early-stage cervical adenocacinoma and adenosquamous carcinoma after primary radical hysterectomy and pelvic lymphadenectomy
The comments conveyed by Dr. Carneiro [1] in reference to our article [2] regarding prognostic factors and impact of adjuvant therapy on survival in early-stage cervical adenocacinoma and adenosquamous carcinoma after primary radical hysterectomy and pelvic lymphadenectomy are highly appreciated. He pointed out that details related to type of adjuvant treatment have not been analyzed detailed form, and that we did not provide the information about positive and/or close parametrial or vaginal margins, which factor that might be associated with both, cancer specific survival and recurrence free survival. Neck dissection versus “watchful-waiting” in early squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue our experience on 127 cases
Early oral squamous cell carcinoma (EOSCC) represents about 90% of the oral cancers especially in older males. The etiology is multifactorial, strongly related to tobacco and alcohol abuse, but also infective agents, Human papillomaviruses (HPV16-18), genetic factors and pre-neoplastic lesions seem to be implicated. There is no consensus in the literature for the treatment of early squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue (stages I –II); both an elective neck dissection policy and a watchful-waiting policy have their proponents in the different centers. The surgical management of esophago-gastric junctional cancer
The best available surgical strategy in the treatment of resectable esophago-gastric junctional (EGJ) cancer is a controversial topic. In this review we evaluate the current literature and scientific evidence examining the surgical treatment of locally advanced EGJ cancer by comparing esophagectomy with gastrectomy, transhiatal with transthoracic esophagectomy, minimally invasive with open esophagectomy, and less extensive with more extensive lymphadenectomy. We also assess endoscopic procedures increasingly used for early EGJ cancer. (Source: Surgical Oncology)

Cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) in elderly patients. A systematic literature review
The objective of this review was to evaluate morbidity, mortality and survival outcomes of elderly patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis. A systematic literature search and standardized data collection of primary research publications until June 2016 on morbidity, mortality and survival outcomes in adults aged 65 and older with peritoneal carcinomatosis treated with cytoreduction and HIPEC was performed, using PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, ClinicalTrials.gov and Cochrane. Bibliographies of relevant reports were also hand-searched to identify all potentially eligible studies. (Source: Surgical Oncology)

Comparison of oncologic outcomes between partial and radical nephrectomy for localized renal cell carcinoma: A systematic review and meta-analysis
To date, there remain uncertainties over the oncological outcomes for partial and radical nephrectomy of localized renal cell carcinoma (RCC). A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed. Eligible studies were retrieved from PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library and Web of Science databases. The endpoints of oncologic outcomes included overall survival (OS), cancer-specific survival (CSS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS). Multivariable adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) were used to evaluate each endpoint. (Source: Surgical Oncology)

Recurrence after surgery in esophago-gastric junction adenocarcinoma: Current management and future perspectives
Recurrent esophago-gastric junction adenocarcinoma is not a rare event and its correct management is still debated. Many approaches for the treatment of these patients exist, but only few studies compare the different techniques. Most of the studies are retrospectives series and describe the experiences of single institutions in the treatment of recurrent esophageal and esophago-gastric junction cancers. Nowadays surgery is still the main and only curative treatment. Other alternative palliative therapies could be endoscopic stent placement and balloon dilation, photodynamic therapy, thermal tumor ablation (laser photoabla...

Post-resection recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma in cirrhotic patients: Is thrombocytopenia a risk factor for recurrence?
Liver resection is the main treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients with sufficient liver reserve. However, the long-term outcomes are dismal because the recurrence rate is high, especially in cirrhotic patients. The role of platelets as a predictive factor for HCC recurrence is still controversial. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of the preoperative platelet count on HCC recurrence after liver resection in patients with liver cirrhosis. (Source: Surgical Oncology)

Preoperative diagnosis of tumor grade and type in endometrial cancer by pipelle sampling and hysteroscopy: Results of a French study
No data are available to establish whether operative hysteroscopy is superior to standard pipelle sampling to determine histological and grade status in endometrial cancer (EC). The aim of this study was to evaluate whether pipelle device sampling or operative hysteroscopy had an impact on preoperative determination of histological and grade status in EC and consequently on surgical management.
