“Liver-first” approach with ALPPS: The natural combination of two new concepts in liver surgery
Modern colorectal liver metastasis (CRLM) surgery has undergone a very impressive development over the last ten years due to the evolution of methods, techniques and extension of surgical indications. The main limits of surgical CRLM treatment were extension of liver disease, volume and quality of future liver remnant and foreseeable hypertrophy induced by portal vein embolisation or ligation (PVE/PVL) for a possible two-staged hepatectomy. In 2007 Dr. Schlitt, performing the first associated liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy (ALPPS) [1], unconsciously opened Pandora ’s box; leading to inten...

Letter-to-the-Editor “Laparoscopic treatment of early-stage endometrial cancer with and without uterine manipulator: Our experience and review of literature” by Tinelli R et al. (Surgical Oncology 25 (2016) 98–103)
We read with great interest the results of the study performed by Tinelli et  al. “Laparoscopic treatment of early-stage endometrial cancer with and without uterine manipulator: Our experience and review of literature” in the recent edition of Surgical Oncology [1]. The authors present data of a retrospective case control study of 110 patients who underwent laparoscopic surgery with or without the use of a uterine manipulator for clinical early stage endometrial cancer. They conclude that the use of a uterine manipulator does not increase the rate of positive peritoneal cytology, LVSI and recurrence. (Source: Surgical Oncology)

Down-regulation of let-7a-5p predicts lymph node metastasis and prognosis in colorectal cancer: Implications for chemotherapy
In this study, one hundred and ninety-two CRC patients were enrolled. The expression of let-7a-5p and HMGA2 in serum and tumour tissues were analysed by real-time PCR and immunohistochemistry. (Source: Surgical Oncology)

Tamoxifen enhances the cytotoxicity of conventional chemotherapy in esophageal adenocarcinoma cells
Esophageal adenocarcinoma is a lethal malignancy which is increasing in incidence, and many patients receive chemotherapy as part of their treatment. We have previously demonstrated that esophageal adenocarcinoma-derived cell lines respond to treatment with estrogen receptor modulators, such as tamoxifen. Reports from breast cancer suggest that tamoxifen may attenuate the efficacy of other chemotherapeutic agents. We have therefore assessed the response of esophageal adenocarcinoma cell lines to tamoxifen therapy when given in combination with conventional agents. (Source: Surgical Oncology)

Prognostic factors for disease relapse in patients with neuroendocrine tumours who underwent curative surgery
Surgery is the only modality of cure in patients diagnosed with neuroendocrine tumours (NETs). The aim of this study was to identify prognostic factors associated with disease relapse in patients with NETs treated by potentially-curative surgery. (Source: Surgical Oncology)
