Biomarkers for Prediction of Central Venous Catheter Related-Thrombosis in Patients With Hematological Malignancies
Conclusion: Elevated leukocyte count, high PAI-1, and high FVIII were associated with an increased incidence of symptomatic CVC-related thrombosis. We hope in future that simple, easy to determine laboratory tests that reflect the hemostatic and fibrinolytic activity in combination with clinical parameters may help to identify hematological patients at highest risk of CVC-related thrombosis and help to tailor the management of thromboprophylaxis in hematological patients undergoing CVC placement. Rediscussing Anticoagulation in Distal Deep Venous Thrombosis
Conclusion: Distal DVT is associated with a high incidence of PE compared to proximal DVT. Distal DVT and ICVT can provoke PE with involvement of proximal vessels in the pulmonary arterial tree, even in asymptomatic patients. Our study arises discussion in the controversial debate regarding the need for routine anticoagulation in distal DVT. (Source: Clinical and Applied Thrombosis/Hemostasis)

Effects of Fibrinogen Concentrate on Thrombin Generation, Thromboelastometry Parameters, and Laboratory Coagulation Testing in a 24-Hour Porcine Trauma Model
Conclusion: This study suggests that, in trauma, fibrinogen supplementation may shorten some measurements of the speed of coagulation initiation and produce a short-lived increase in endogenous thrombin potential, potentially through increased clotting substrate availability. Approximately 12 and 24 hours after starting fibrinogen concentrate/saline infusion, all parameters measured in this study were comparable in the 2 study groups. Increased Level of Thrombotic Biomarkers in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation Despite Traditional and New Anticoagulant Therapy
The aim of this study was to examine the effect of the traditional oral anticoagulant, warfarin (W), and new anticoagulants, apixaban (A) and rivaroxaban (R), on the level of thrombotic biomarkers in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Circulating plasma levels of von Willebrand factor (vWF), prothrombin fragment 1.2 (F1.2), microparticle tissue factor (MP-TF), and plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI-1) were analyzed as potential markers of clot formation in 30 patients with AF prior to ablation surgery. Patients with AF were divided into 2 groups based on their usage (n = 21) and nonusage (n = 9) of any oral anticoag...

Antiphospholipid Antibodies and Procoagulant Profile in Tunisians With Inflammatory Bowel Diseases
The hypercoagulable state accompanying inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) is still poorly understood. The aim of this study was to assess antiphospholipid antibodies (APAs) and a large panel of inherited and acquired thrombotic markers simultaneously in a sample of Tunisian patients with IBD. In total, 89 consecutive patients with IBD (mean age 38 ± 15 years; 48 with Crohn disease and 41 with ulcerative colitis) and 129 controls were prospectively evaluated for immunoglobulin (Ig) G, IgM, and IgA antibodies against cardiolipin (aCL), β2glycoprotein I (aβ2GPI), and prothrombin (aPT); IgG and IgM antibodies ...

Serum and Urinary Orosomucoid in Young Patients With Type 1 Diabetes: A Link Between Inflammation, Microvascular Complications, and Subclinical Atherosclerosis
Orosomucoid is an acute-phase serum protein that is upregulated in urine samples of patients with diabetic nephropathy. We assessed serum and urinary orosomucoid levels in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes and their relation to microvascular complications and carotid intima–media thickness (CIMT). Sixty patients with type 1 diabetes were divided into 2 groups according to the presence of microvascular complications and compared with 60 healthy controls. High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), urinary albumin–creatinine ratio (UACR), serum and urinary orosomucoid, and CI...

Acquired Isolated FVII Deficiency: An Underestimated and Potentially Important Laboratory Finding
Conclusions: Isolated FVII deficiency is a rare defect, which appears to be a finding associated with several morbid conditions, especially sepsis and tumors. This indicates the need for a careful investigation of even a mild prolongation of prothrombin time, especially when fibrinogen and partial thromboplastin time are normal. Thromboelastography as a Surrogate Marker of Perisurgical Hemostasis in Gaucher Disease
Thromboelastography (TEG) has long been available for routine monitoring of perisurgical and postpartum hemostasis, especially at point of care. The purpose of this study is to retrospectively compare TEG parameters to concomitant standard clotting test results in an unselected cohort of patients with Gaucher disease to ascertain whether TEG values are specific and sensitive enough to substitute for classic coagulation tests for decision making. This remains a cogent concern because of high incidence of thrombocytopenia in patients with Gaucher disease. Thromboelastography values were compared to concomitant platelet count...

Plasma Concentrations of Protein Z and Protein Z-Dependent Protease Inhibitor in Patients With Essential Thrombocythemia
The pathological consequences of decreased protein Z (PZ) and/or Z-dependent protease inhibitor (ZPI) levels remain as yet unclear, despite a growing body of evidence which supports their involvement in an increased thrombotic risk. The purpose of the present study was 2-fold: to evaluate plasma concentrations of protein Z and ZPI in patients with essential thrombocythemia (ET) and to determine their significance in thrombotic complications. The median (range) plasma concentrations of PZ in our patients with ET were lower, but not significantly, than in healthy individuals: PZ (1.42 µg/mL, 0.36-3.14 µg/mL vs 1....
