Nilotinib Does Not Alter the Secretory Functions of Carotid Artery Endothelial Cells in a Prothrombotic or Antithrombotic Fashion
Conclusion: Considering the results obtained in our study, nilotinib does not affect the functions of endothelial cells either in a prothrombotic or an antithrombotic fashion, despite a dose-dependent decline in cell viability. (Source: Clinical and Applied Thrombosis/Hemostasis)

Risk Factors and Treatment Strategies in Patients With Retinal Vascular Occlusions
Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) and retinal artery occlusion (RAO) cause significant visual impairment. The role of thrombophilia and cardiovascular testing is uncertain, and optimal treatment strategies have not been determined. We reviewed medical records of 39 patients with RVO and RAO (23 women and 16 men). Thrombophilia and cardiovascular evaluations were performed and outcomes were reviewed. In all, 24 (61.5%) patients had at least 1 thrombophilia. Elevated factor VIII levels were found in RVO (n = 5) but not in RAO. There are no other significant differences in thrombophilias in RVO compared to those in RAO. Most patie...

Comparison of Simultaneous and Alternate Bilateral Pneumatic Compression in Hemodynamic Effects and Thromboprophylaxis After Total Knee Arthroplasty
In conclusion, group SF showed superior hemodynamic efficacy, but this superiority may not be a surrogate for better thromboprophylaxis. (Source: Clinical and Applied Thrombosis/Hemostasis)

The Pathophysiology and Management of Acute Traumatic Coagulopathy
Acute traumatic coagulopathy (ATC) is commonly seen among patients with severe injury and will lead to uncontrolled bleeding diathesis, which is an important contributor to trauma death. During the past 10 years, the understanding of the mechanism causing ATC has changed rapidly. The mechanisms for ATC are complicated. To date, the possible mechanisms include activation of protein C, shedding of endothelial glycocalyx, catecholamine release, platelet dysfunction, primary, and secondary fibrinolysis, with tissue injury and hypoperfusion as the triggers. Classic factors such as dilution, acidosis, and hypothermia can further...

Congenital Factor VII Deficiency in Children at Tertiary Health Care Facility in Pakistan
This study presents the demographics, clinical spectrum, and outcome of patients with congenital factor VII (FVII) deficiency at a tertiary care center over a period of 12 years. Of the 49 patients, 27 (55%) patients were males. Consanguinity was found in 92% of the patients. The median age of symptom onset was 2.4 (interquartile range [IQR]: 1.1-6.5) years with a median age of 5.8 (IQR: 3.1-10) years at diagnosis. Life-threatening complications like intracranial bleeding (ICB) and intra-abdominal bleeding (IAB) were observed in 8 (16.4%) patients. We found that 11 (55%) of the 20 patients with FVII coagulant activity (FVI...

Recurrence of Venous Thromboembolism in Patients With Cancer Treated With Warfarin
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a common complication in patients with cancer. Previous randomized studies have demonstrated that the rates of recurrent VTE are lower in patients treated with low-molecular-weight heparin compared to warfarin. We performed a retrospective analysis of 236 patients with cancer managed by a dedicated oncology anticoagulation management service to compare "real-world" rates of recurrent VTE and bleeding in patients treated with warfarin versus parenteral anticoagulants. Initial anticoagulant regimen included a parenteral agent with transition to warfarin in 132 (55.9%) patients, enoxaparin in 5...

Heparin Reexposure in Patients With a History of Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia
Conclusion: Intraoperative heparin reexposure in patients with a history of HIT has a small risk of developing HIT recurrence. The use of preexposure plasma exchange in patients with positive antiplatelet factor 4/heparin antibody and postexposure nonheparin anticoagulants arguably may have reduced the risk of recurrence of HIT. Efficacy of Change to New P2Y12 Receptor Antagonists in Patients High on Treatment Platelet Reactivity Undergoing Percutaneous Coronary Intervention
Selective intensification of platelet inhibition may improve high on treatment platelet reactivity (HPR). We evaluated the efficacy of dual-antiplatelet therapy, including clopidogrel (CPG), compared to new P2Y12-receptor antagonists in patients with HPR undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention, regarding the outcome of composite major adverse cardiac events (MACEs, including death, acute coronary syndrome [ACS], and stent restenosis). The presence of HPR (71 of 181 patients) almost doubled the risk of MACEs. The new antiplatelet agent reduced MACEs (45.8%, 26%, and 16.7% for CPG, prasugrel, and ticagrelor [TGL]; RR 0...

Increased Epicardial Adipose Tissue Thickness is Associated With Angiographic Thrombus Burden in the Patients With Non-ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction
We aimed to evaluate the relation among epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) thickness, angiographic presence of thrombus, and the no-reflow in the patients with non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention. The study population consisted of 229 patients. The EAT thickness and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) were significantly higher in the patients with coronary thrombus than in those without coronary thrombus (6.1 ± 1.1 vs 5.1 ± 1.3 mm, P < .001 and 3.4 ± 0.9 vs 2.5 ± 0.7, P < .001, respectively) and in the patients with no-reflow c...

Reduced Effect of Aspirin and Clopidogrel Following Hybrid Coronary Revascularization
Conclusions: A transient reduction in the antiplatelet effect of aspirin and clopidogrel was observed after hybrid coronary revascularization despite limited surgical trauma and off-pump technique. Neither baseline platelet aggregation nor postoperatively increased platelet turnover and acute-phase response could explain this finding. ClinicalTrials.gov identifier, NCT02293928. Factoring in Factor VIII With Acute Ischemic Stroke
There is growing research interest into the etiologies of cryptogenic stroke, in particular as it relates to hypercoagulable states. An elevation in serum levels of the procoagulant factor VIII is recognized as one such culprit of occult cerebral infarctions. It is the objective of the present review to summarize the molecular role of factor VIII in thrombogenesis and its clinical use in the diagnosis and prognosis of acute ischemic stroke. We also discuss the utility of screening for serum factor VIII levels among patients at risk for, or those who have experienced, ischemic stroke. (Source: Clinical and Applied Thrombosis/Hemostasis)
