Aspirin Half Maximal Inhibitory Concentration Value on Platelet Cyclooxygenase1 in Severe Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus is not Significantly Different from that of Healthy Individuals
It is implicated that diabetic patients are more resistant to aspirin therapy than patients with other diseases or healthy individuals. We evaluated the inhibitory effects of aspirin on aggregation and the cyclooxygenase activity of platelets of 10 patients with severe type-2 diabetes mellitis (DM) and compared the results with those of healthy individuals. Although platelet aggregation had a tendency to be more resistant to aspirin with the DM group, there was no significant difference in half maximal inhibitory concentration 50 values of aspirin on the cyclooxygenase activity between the patients with DM and healthy indi...

Cost-Effectiveness Analysis of Plasma Versus Recombinant Factor VIIa for Placing Intracranial Pressure Monitors in Pretransplant Patients With Acute Liver Failure
Both plasma- and recombinant activated factor VII (rFVIIa)-based algorithms can be used to correct coagulopathy in preliver transplant patients with acute liver failure requiring intracranial pressure monitor (ICPM) placement. A decision model was created to compare the cost-effectiveness of these methods. A 70-kg patient could receive either 1 round of plasma followed by coagulation testing or 2 units of plasma and 40 μg/kg rFVIIa. Intracranial pressure monitor is placed without coagulation testing after rFVIIa administration. In the plasma algorithm, the probability of ICPM placement was estimated based on expected in...

Venous Thromboembolism in Patients With Myeloma: Incidence and Risk Factors in a "Real-World" Population
Myeloma has a well-described association with venous thromboembolism (VTE). There are few dedicated studies investigating the incidence and risk factors. Many assessment scores have been suggested to estimate the risk of VTE in patients with cancer but these have been validated in solid organ tumors. The records of patients with myeloma attending a university hospital between January 2007 and December 2012 were reviewed to investigate the incidence of VTE and the associated risk factors. In all, 217 patients with a mean (standard deviation) age at diagnosis of 65 (12) years were included. Of 217 patients, 12% had an episod...

Thrombophilia in Patients With Lower Limb Deep Veins Thrombosis (LDVT) Results of a Monocentric Survey on 103 Consecutive Outpatients
A debate concerns the utility of large screening for acquired or inherited thrombophilia. The study concerns relationship between inherited thrombophilic status and lower limb deep vein thrombosis (LDVT) and highlights the possible use of extensive thrombophilia screening to determine an emerging risk of LDVT. From January 2010 to January 2012, 103 consecutive patients with LDVT were considered. In all, 57 (55.3%) patients with LDVT showed inherited thrombophilia. The most frequent trombophilic alterations were deficiency of protein S (33 patients, 32.0%), methylentethrafolate reductase (MTHFR) gene C677T variant (22 patie...

Relationship Between Red Cell Distribution Width and the GRACE Risk Score With In-Hospital Death in Patients With Acute Coronary Syndrome
The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between red cell distribution width (RDW) and Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events (GRACE) risk score in patients with unstable angina pectoris (UAP) and non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). We retrospectively enrolled 193 patients with UAP/NSTEMI (mean age 63.6 ± 12.6 years; men 57%) in this study. Higher RDW values were associated with increased in-hospital mortality (P = .001). There is a significant correlation between RDW and GRACE score (P < .001). In multivariate logistic regression analysis, RDW was found to be an independent predictor...
