Inhibition of Binding of {beta}2-Glycoprotein 1 to Phosphatidylserine by Polymyxin B, a Lupus-Like Anticoagulant
Polymyxin B is a cationic peptide that inhibits phospholipid-dependent coagulation tests including activated partial thromboplastin time and to a lesser degree prothrombin time. Thrombin clotting time is insensitive to polymyxin B. β2-glycoprotein 1 (β2GP1) is a cofactor of antiphospholipid antibodies. Antiphospholipid autoantibodies also poses lupus anticoagulant activity through interactions with β2GP1. Using affinity chromatography, polymyxin B can effectively decrease the binding of β2GP1 to immobilize phosphatidylserine. Since then, anticoagulant effect of polymyxin B is most likely due to the bind...

Prevalence of JAK2V617F mutation in deep venous thrombosis patients and its clinical significance as a thrombophilic risk factor: Indian perspective
Venous thromboembolism is known to be a complex interaction of genetic and acquired factors leading to thrombosis. JAK2V617F mutation is believed to contribute to a thrombophilic phenotype, possibly through enhanced leukocyte–platelet interactions in myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs). Several studies have focused on the importance of screening for JAK2V617F mutation in patients with splanchnic venous thrombosis (VT) for the detection of nonovert MPNs. The role of JAK2V617F mutation in VT outside the splanchnic region is still widely unsettled. The primary aim of this study was to find out the prevalence of JAK2V617...

Association of Meteorological Variables and Coronary Blood Flow
We aimed to assess the impact of meteorological variables on coronary blood flow (CBF). Coronary blood flow was evaluated using the thrombolysis in myocardial infarction frame count (TFC). The association of CBF with meteorological parameters such as temperature, relative humidity, total solar radiation, atmospheric pressure, wind velocity, and total sunshine duration were investigated as well as demographic, clinical, and laboratory characteristics. Assessment of 1206 patients (median age = 53 years, 723 females) revealed the presence of slow coronary flow (SCF) in 196 patients. Daily maximum temperature [odds ratio = 0.9...

Evaluation of Pediatric Bleeding Questionnaire in Turkish Children With Von Willebrand Disease and Platelet Function Disorders
The diagnosis of mild bleeding disorders is not easy as most of the "healthy" individuals also report bleeding symptoms. In order to get a precise bleeding history, Pediatric Bleeding Questionnaire (PBQ) has been developed. In our study, Turkish children diagnosed with Von Willebrand disease (VWD), platelet function defect (PFD), and healthy children without any symptoms (control group 1) and healthy children with symptoms but found hemostatically normal (control group 2) were analyzed with PBQ. The cut off level for "positive bleeding score" was found to be ≥2 (area under the curve [AUC]: 0.785, 95% confidence interval...

Thromboelastometric Monitoring of the Hemostatic Effect of Platelet Concentrates Transfusion in Thrombocytopenic Children Undergoing Chemotherapy
Prophylactic platelet concentrates transfusion represents a therapeutic choice in patients with chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia. This prospective, non-interventional study evaluated the effects of platelet concentrates transfusion on thromboelastometric parameters of platelet function in 36 transfusion occasions for 11 thrombocytopenic children undergoing chemotherapy. Pre- and posttransfusion (1-2 hours) blood samples were analyzed using standard coagulation tests and thromboelastometry (ROTEM) measurements (EXTEM and FIBTEM tests). Platelet component of the clot was calculated based on the EXTEM and FIBTEM maximum ...

Evaluation of Lymphocyte Subgroups in Children With Down Syndrome
In conclusion, we would like to emphasize that blood CD3, CD4, and CD19 levels were found to be decreased in children with DS. Based on these finding, we think that these decreased lymphocyte subgroups might be responsible for increased susceptibility to infections in children with DS. ADAMTS13 Levels in Young Patients With {beta}-Thalassemia Major: Relation to Hepatitis C Virus Infection, Liver Cirrhosis, and Iron Overload
Conclusion: Patients with β-thalassemia major infected with HCV have low ADAMTS13 levels, and a marked reduction was observed among patients with liver cirrhosis and, therefore, may be liable to thromboembolic manifestations. (Source: Clinical and Applied Thrombosis/Hemostasis)

Hereditary and Acquired Thrombophilia in Splanchnic Vein Thrombosis: A Single-Center Experience
The purpose of this study was to characterize differences in the prevalence of hereditary and acquired thrombophilia in patients with splanchnic vein thrombosis (SVT). A total of 88 consecutive patients with SVT, including Budd Chiari Syndrome (n = 47) and portal extrahepatic portal vein obstruction (n = 41), underwent comprehensive thrombophilia testing, including testing for heritable and acquired causes. In 33 (37.5%) patients, etiology could be explained by at least 1 of the heritable etiologic factors, and 31 (35.2%) patients could be explained by at least 1 of the acquired causes studied. The combination of multiple ...

Evaluation and Pharmacokinetics of Treatment Dose Enoxaparin in Hospitalized Patients With Morbid Obesity
Conclusion: Patients with morbid obesity required less than the recommended 1 mg/kg enoxaparin dose to achieve therapeutic peak anti-Xa levels; therefore, initiation with lower dosages is prudent and anti-Xa monitoring should guide dosage adjustments. Thromboelastographic Study of Psychophysiological Stress: A Review
Thromboelastography (TEG) is drawing more attention for clinical and laboratory studies of hemostasis. It has been applied to evaluate the effects of both psychological and physiological stress on whole blood coagulation from the onset of the coagulation cascade through clot formation, to the end with fibrinolysis. We conducted a comprehensive review on the applications of TEG for assessment of different stressors, ranging from physical exercise to emotional situations. The methodology is unique in terms of instrumentation, the methods to activate blood coagulation, the type of blood (citrated vs fresh blood), and study se...
