Lethal neonatal rigidity and multifocal seizure syndrome with a new mutation in BRAT1
In this report, an RMFSL case, who died in the 10th month of the life, with rigidity, drug-resistant myoclonic seizures in the face and extremities, with, significant motor delays is presented. The exon sequence was determined and a new homozygous variant (C.2230_2237dupAACATGC) was detected. This RMFSL case with a homozygous variant in the BRAT1 gene, is the fourth one in the literature and the first one being reported from a Turkish family. (Source: Epilepsy and Behavior Case Reports)

Drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome caused by valproic acid as a monotherapy for epilepsy: First case report in Asian population
Publication date: Available online 20 June 2017 Source:Epilepsy & Behavior Case Reports Author(s): X.T. Wu, P.W. Hong, D.J. Suolang, D. Zhou, H. Stefan Valproic acid (VPA) is a broad-spectrum antiseizure drug used for a variety of clinical conditions, such as epilepsy and mood disorders. Drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome (DRESS) accompanied by hyponatremia, thrombocytopenia, hypoalbuminemia and high aminotransferase has never been reported as an adverse effect of VPA monotherapy during titration for epilepsy in Asian population. Hereby, we present the case of a 73-year-old Chinese male who suffered from...

Language recovery after epilepsy surgery of the Broca's area
We present a patient with medically refractory frontal lobe epilepsy who underwent successful surgery with resection of the Broca's area, primarily involving the pars triangularis (BA 45). We document transient expressive aphasia followed by recovery of speech. This case provides new insights into the plasticity of the language network. (Source: Epilepsy and Behavior Case Reports)

A case of pure gelastic seizures due to hypothalamic hamartoma with a benign course
We report a case of gelastic seizures associated with a hypothalamic hamartoma, which followed a benign course. A 31-year-old woman with episodes of laughter was referred for diagnostic evaluation. Her initial MRI and EEG were reported as normal. However, her laughter episodes were typical of gelastic seizures from history and video. Repeat MRI revealed a small HH. She declined any medical treatment and was medication free until last follow up. This benign course of HH-associated epilepsy, not necessitating treatment, to our knowledge, has not been previously reported. (Source: Epilepsy and Behavior Case Reports)

Vertical gaze palsy due to medication error
We present a teenage boy with recent onset of seizures, who was erroneously treated with a large dose of an anti-epileptic medication as a result of drug mix-up. The ensuing drug toxicity caused vertical gaze palsy, an unusual manifestation related to overdose of the agent. Timely recognition of the error and discontinuation of the drug resulted in complete recovery to baseline. (Source: Epilepsy and Behavior Case Reports)

Efficacy of perampanel for controlling seizures and improving neurological dysfunction in a patient with dentatorubral-pallidoluysian atrophy (DRPLA)
Publication date: Available online 26 May 2017 Source:Epilepsy & Behavior Case Reports Author(s): Hideaki Shiraishi, Kiyoshi Egawa, Tomoshiro Ito, Osamu Kawano, Naoko Asahina, Shinobu Kohsaka We administered perampanel (PER) to a bedridden 13-year-old male patient with dentatorubral-pallidoluysian atrophy (DRPLA). The DRPLA diagnosis was based on the presence of a CAG trinucleotide repeat in the ATN1 gene. The patient experienced continuous myoclonic seizures and weekly generalized tonic–clonic seizures (GTCs). PER stopped the patient's myoclonic seizures and reduced the GTCs to fragmented clonic seizures...

Successful surgical management of New Onset Refractory Status Epilepticus (NORSE) presenting with gelastic seizures in a 3year old girl
Publication date: Available online 22 May 2017 Source:Epilepsy & Behavior Case Reports Author(s): Ahmad Marashly, Sean Lew, Jennifer Koop Gelastic seizures (GS) are typically associated with hypothalamic hamartomas and present in childhood. However it is now known that GS can be found in focal epilepsies arising from other regions in the brain, including mesial and neocortical frontal, temporal and parietal regions. GS have rarely been described as the presenting manifestation of New Onset Refractory Status Epilepticus (NORSE). In this article we describe a previously healthy 3year old girl who presented with ...

CASE REPORT: Epilepsy Surgical outcome for epileptic and non epileptic seizures with posttraumatic stress disorder and depression
Publication date: Available online 20 May 2017 Source:Epilepsy & Behavior Case Reports Author(s): Mazen Basheikh A 48year old male was diagnosed with both drug resistant epileptic and psychogenic nonepileptic seizures. Both diagnoses were confirmed by video-EEG monitoring. His epileptic seizures were a consequence of right mesial temporal sclerosis. He was diagnosed by a psychiatrist to have depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Following a right anterior temporal resection he became seizure free (both epileptic and nonepileptic) with a remarkable improvement in his psychiatric comorbidities leadi...

Spiders, Ladybugs and Bees: A Case of Unusual Sensations in a Child with Cingulate Epilepsy
We describe a child with cingulate epilepsy who experienced unpleasant/painful sensory phenomenon. The sensations were described as spiders crawling on his forehead/ right leg, ladybugs causing right ear pain and bees stinging his head/right extremities. Unpleasant sensory phenomenon/pain are rarely reported in cingulate epilepsy. Recognizing the role of the cingulate in producing pain/unusual sensory phenomenon is important, and may have localizing value when evaluating children for epilepsy surgery. Emotional stimuli-provoked seizures potentially misdiagnosed as psychogenic non-epileptic seizures: A case of temporal lobe epilepsy with amygdala enlargement in a middle-aged patient
Publication date: Available online 27 April 2017 Source:Epilepsy & Behavior Case Reports Author(s): Hidetaka Tamune, Go Taniguchi, Susumu Morita, Yousuke Kumakura, Shinsuke Kondo, Kiyoto Kasai The association between emotional stimuli and temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is largely unknown. Here, we report the case of a depressive, 50-year-old female complaining of episodes of a “spaced out” experience precipitated by emotional stimuli. Psychogenic non-epileptic seizures were suspected. However, video-EEG coupled with emotional stimuli-provoked procedures and MRI findings of amygdala enlargement, led to the...
