Thresholds of Central Systolic Blood Pressure in a Normotensive Chinese Middle-Aged Population
An increasing body of evidence has emerged showing that the central systolic blood pressure (CSBP) is more relevant to the risk of cardiovascular (CV) diseases than brachial blood pressure. However, there are no agreed CSBP threshold values above which the risk of CV disease is increased. The aim of our study was to define the threshold values of the CSBP in a normotensive Chinese population; 10 012 adults 35 to 65 years of age were eligible for analysis. We excluded 3765 participants with hypertension, and the final normotensive reference sample consisted of 6247 participants. We defined abnormally high CSBP as exceeding ...

Management and Outcomes Among Chinese Hospitalized Patients With Established Cardiovascular Disease or Multiple Risk Factors
We assessed the management and outcomes among hospitalized patients with coronary artery disease (CAD), stroke, peripheral artery disease (PAD), or with multiple (≥2) cardiovascular (CV) risk factors (multiple risk factors [MRFs]). We retrospectively studied 3732 hospitalized patients of either CV disease or ≥2 risk factors for atherothrombosis from October 2004 to January 2005. Outcomes included CV death, myocardial infarction (MI), stroke, and hospitalization for atherothrombotic events. About one-third had disease involving ≥1 vascular bed. Medication was more intense in patients with CAD than in others. The lo...

Reducing Vascular Calcification by Anti-IL-1{beta} Monoclonal Antibody in a Mouse Model of Familial Hypercholesterolemia
Conclusions: Herein, we demonstrate that aortic calcifications can be inhibited by an IL-1β mAb in LDLR-deficient mice. These results have a translational component to prevent vascular calcification in human and represent new evidence to rationalize targeting inflammation in cardiovascular disease. (Source: Angiology)

Effect of Hematologic Parameters on Microvascular Reperfusion in Patients With ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction Treated With Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention
Conclusion: Our results suggest that higher WBC count and MPV at admission are independent predictors of impaired microvascular perfusion in patients with STEMI. On the other hand, a negative correlation was found between lymphocyte count and impaired microvascular perfusion. Specifically, elevated lymphocyte count seemed to indicate the presence of impaired microvascular reperfusion in patients with STEMI. (Source: Angiology)

Increased Mean Platelet Volume in Familial Hypercholesterolemia
Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a genetic disorder of lipoprotein metabolism and increases the risk of premature cardiovascular diseases. In patients with FH, platelet function may be activated; however, the extent of this activation and its etiology are unclear. We aimed to evaluate the mean platelet volume (MPV), a marker of platelet activation, in patients with FH. The study group consisted of 164 patients with FH and 160 control patients. Controls were matched for age, gender, hypertension, and smoking. The MPV was significantly higher in patients with FH than in controls (9.2 ± 0.4 vs 7.9 ± 0.6 fL,...

Insulin Resistance Increases the Risk of Contrast-Induced Nephropathy in Patients Undergoing Elective Coronary Intervention
We assessed the influence of insulin resistance (IR) on the development of contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) in patients (n = 719) undergoing elective percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Patients were divided into diabetes mellitus (DM = 242), nondiabetic IR (IR = 120), and nondiabetic insulin sensitivity (IS = 357) groups according to medical history and homeostasis model assessment insulin resistance index. Serum creatinine (SCr) and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) were measured before and 72 hours after PCI. There were no differences in SCr and eGFR among the groups before PCI; SCr increased and eGFR ...

Association Between Platelet to Lymphocyte Ratio and Saphenous Vein Graft Disease
Atherosclerosis plays an important role in saphenous vein graft disease (SVGD). Previous trials showed that inflammatory blood cells play a role in this process. The platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) has been proposed as a novel predictor for cardiovascular risk and indicator of atherosclerosis. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between SVGD and PLR. A total of 220 patients with SVG were enrolled (n = 87 with SVGD and n = 133 with patent SVG). A ≥50% stenosis within the SVG was defined as clinically significant. Median PLR (P < .001) and mean platelet volume (MPV; P = .043) were significantly high...

Endoscopic Versus "No-Touch" Saphenous Vein Harvesting for Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting: A Trade-Off Between Wound Healing and Graft Patency
The advantage in terms of wound infection, wound healing, and scarring has resulted in the recent adoption of endoscopic vein harvesting (EVH) as a standard of care for coronary artery bypass grafting in some centers. However, concerns regarding the quality of these grafts have been raised after recent evidence of decreased graft patency, increased reoperation rate, and myocardial infarct, problems that are associated with vascular trauma caused when using this technique. Simultaneously, an atraumatic, "no-touch" technique for harvesting the saphenous vein was developed producing grafts with improved patency comparable to ...

Rosuvastatin Decreases Mean Platelet Volume in Patients With Diabetes Mellitus
Statins have multiple effects (also known as pleiotropic effects) on inflammation, plaque stabilization, endothelial function, and hemostasis. We evaluated the effects of rosuvastatin on mean platelet volume (MPV)—a marker for platelet activity—in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) on rosuvastatin medication. Patients (n = 178) who were to be prescribed high-intensity rosuvastatin were retrospectively enrolled according to their medical records. Baseline and 6-month biochemical tests, automated blood count, cell-volume analysis, and their cardiovascular risk factors were recorded. Rosuvastatin significantly r...
