Comparison of Serum Uric Acid, Bilirubin, and C-Reactive Protein as Prognostic Biomarkers of In-Hospital MACE Between Women and Men With ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction
This study demonstrated that high CRP and TB serum levels have a prognostic association with in-hospital MACE in male patients with STEMI. (Source: Angiology)

Arterial Stiffness as a Biomarker of Radiation-Induced Carotid Atherosclerosis
Arterial stiffness is thought to be a precursor to atherosclerosis. Conventional arterial stiffness parameters as potential biomarkers of radiation-induced damage were investigated. Patients with head and neck cancer treated with radiotherapy ≥2 years previously to one side of the neck were included. The unirradiated side was the internal control. Beta stiffness index (B) and elastic modulus (Ep) were used to assess arterial stiffness and were measured in proximal, mid, and distal common carotid artery (CCA) and compared with the corresponding unirradiated segments. Fifty patients (68% male; median age 58 years; interqu...

IGF-1 and Insulin Resistance Are Major Determinants of Common Carotid Artery Thickness in Morbidly Obese Young Patients
In conclusion, in morbidly obese young adults, insulin resistance and IGF-1 z-score are significantly associated with CC-IMT, independent of other major cardiovascular risk factors. (Source: Angiology)

Association Between Kidney Dysfunction and Carotid Atherosclerosis in Community-Based Older Adults in China
This study consisted of 1257 participants, aged 55 years and older and free of cardiovascular disease. Kidney dysfunction was classified as mild, moderate, and severe (estimated glomerular filtration rate, 45-59, 30-44, and <30 mL/min/1.73 m2, respectively). We found that the mean common carotid artery intima–media thickness (CCA-IMT) progressively increased with decrement in kidney function (P < .001). Even mild kidney dysfunction was significantly associated with CCA-IMT thickening (CCA-IMT ≥1.0 mm; odds ratio [OR] 1.52; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.16-1.99) compared to normal kidney function. A signific...

Testing Clinical Scores to Diagnose Incident Deep Vein Thrombosis in Patients Hospitalized in a Department of Medicine: Can Biomarkers Improve Accuracy?
Shifting the context from the emergency department to the department of medicine, we compared different scores to diagnose deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in patients with several comorbidities, hospitalized in a department of internal medicine. We prospectively recruited 178 consecutive hospitalized patients in whom clinical suspicion of DVT was assessed by Wells modified score for DVT, Hamilton, Kahn, and St Andrè Hospital scores. Deep vein thrombosis was confirmed in 85 (48%) patients by both echocolor Doppler and angiocomputed tomography scan. The use of risk scores based on symptoms and clinical signs was weakly use...

Effect of Glycemic Regulation on Endocan Levels in Patients With Diabetes: A Preliminary Study
Endothelial-specific molecule 1 (endocan) is expressed by endothelial cells and may have a major role in the regulation of cell adhesion and in the pathogenesis of inflammatory disorders. We aimed to assess change in endocan levels after 3 months of lifestyle change recommendations and guideline-based treatment. Diabetic patients (n = 77) who had neither chronic kidney disease nor chronic inflammatory disease were included. After baseline evaluation, the patients were advised lifestyle changes, and their medical treatment was determined individually according to recommendations of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) gu...

Optimal Duration of Dual Antiplatelet Therapy After DES Implantation: A Meta-Analysis of 11 Randomized Trials
Despite new-generations of drug-eluting stents (DESs), the optimal duration of dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) remains controversial. We performed a meta-analysis of randomized trials (RTs) evaluating the effectiveness and safety of shorter versus longer DAPT duration strategies in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary interventions with DES. Literature and main scientific session abstracts were searched. The primary end point was mortality. Secondary end points were (1) cardiovascular mortality, (2) nonfatal myocardial infarction, (3) definite/probable stent thrombosis (ST), and (4) major bleedings. We included 11 RT...

Management of Coronary Artery Disease in South Asian Populations: Why and How to Prevent and Treat Differently
The South Asian (SA) population constitutes one of the largest ethnic groups in the world. Several studies that compared host and migrant populations around the world indicate that SAs have a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) than their native-born counterparts. Herein, we review the literature to address the role of the screening tools, scoring systems, and guidelines for primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention in these populations. Management based on screening for the CVD risk factors in a high-risk population such as SAs can improve health care outcomes. There are many scoring tools for calcula...
