Anemia and Outcome in Outpatients With Peripheral Artery Disease
The influence of anemia on outcome in stable outpatients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) has not been consistently investigated. We used data from the Factores de Riesgo y ENfermedad Arterial (FRENA) Registry to compare ischemic events and mortality rates in stable outpatients with symptomatic PAD and anemia. Of 1663 patients with PAD, 208 (12.5%) had anemia. Over 18 months, patients with anemia had a higher rate of myocardial infarction (MI; rate ratio [RR]: 2.10; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.04-3.99), limb amputation (RR: 2.98; 95%CI: 1.70-5.05), and higher mortality (RR: 3.58; 95%CI: 2.39-5.28) than those withou...

Preprocedural Albumin Levels and Risk of In-Stent Restenosis After Coronary Stenting With Bare-Metal Stent
In-stent restenosis (ISR) remains a significant clinical problem in patients with coronary artery disease treated with percutaneous coronary intervention. Decreased serum albumin (SA) level is related to an increased risk of cardiovascular events. The aim of the present study was to assess whether SA levels at admission are an independent predictor of ISR in patients undergoing bare-metal stent (BMS) implantation. A total of 341 patients (aged 61 ± 11, 65.4% men) with a history of BMS implantation and a further control coronary angiography due to stable angina pectoris (SAP) were included. The study population was c...

Carotid Plaques Correlates in Patients With Familial Hypercholesterolemia
Patients with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) are at increased risk of premature cardiovascular disease. We compared factors associated with the presence of carotid plaques and carotid intima–media thickness (cIMT), markers of subclinical atherosclerosis, in 241 patients with FH (98, 40.7% men; mean age 41 ± 18.4 years). Patients with FH having carotid plaques (36.5%) had mean age, apolipoprotein (apo) B, glucose, apoA1, systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic BP, waist/hip ratio (WHR), and body mass index higher than patients without plaques. Logistic regression revealed that apoB (odds ratio [OR] per ...

Hematological Parameters as Predictors of Cardiovascular Disease in Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome Patients
We investigated the role of the red cell distribution width (RDW) and other parameters including platelet (PLT) count, mean platelet volume (MPV), and platelet distribution width (PDW) in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) having cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Patients (n = 142) having sleep disorders and who applied for a night polysomnography were included in this study. For statistical analysis, chi-square test, bivarite correlation, and logistic and stepwise regression tests were used. A positive correlation between RDW MPV, RDW, and body mass index as well as PLT and apnea–hypopnea index were...

Ischemia-Modified Albumin and Atherosclerosis in Patients With Familial Mediterranean Fever
The constriction of vessels due to atherosclerotic lesions causes hypoxia/ischemia and oxidative changes resulting in transformation of free albumin to ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) in the circulation and increased carotid intima–media thickness (cIMT). We investigated the reliability of IMA increase in evaluating atherosclerosis in patients with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) compared with cIMT. Patients with FMF (n = 58) diagnosed by the Tel-Hashomer criteria in attack-free period and 38 healthy people were included in the study. Patient demographics as well as the clinical and laboratory characteristics of t...

Cell Therapy for Critical Limb Ischemia: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials
Early-phase trials showed the feasibility and potential efficacy of cell therapy in patients with critical limb ischemia (CLI). For systematic review, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of cell therapy versus no cell therapy in CLI were searched from PubMed and the Cochrane library databases. Outcome measures included major amputation, complete ulcer healing, ankle–brachial index (ABI), and all-cause mortality. Data were pooled using 16 RCTs, involving 774 patients. Compared with no cell therapy, cell therapy significantly reduced major amputation (odds ratio [OR]: 0.54; 95% CI: 0.34-0.87: P = .01) and improved ulce...

The Incidence and the Risk Factors of Silent Embolic Cerebral Infarction After Coronary Angiography and Percutaneous Coronary Interventions
Silent embolic cerebral infarction (SECI) is a major complication of coronary angiography (CAG) and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Patients with stable coronary artery disease (CAD) who underwent CAG with or without PCI were recruited. Cerebral diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging was performed for SECI within 24 hours. Clinical and angiographic characteristics were compared between patients with and without SECI. Silent embolic cerebral infarction occurred in 12 (12%) of the 101 patients. Age, total cholesterol, SYNTAX score (SS), and coronary artery bypass history were greater in the SECI(+) group (65...
