The Prognostic Impact of In-Hospital Change in Mean Platelet Volume in Patients With Non-ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction
It is unclear whether changes in mean platelet volume (MPV) are associated with total mortality in acute coronary syndromes. We investigated whether the change in MPV predicts total mortality in patients with non–ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). We retrospectively analyzed 419 consecutive patients (19 patients were excluded). The remaining patients were categorized as survivors (n = 351) or nonsurvivors (n = 49). Measurements of MPV were performed at admission and after 24 hours. The difference between the 2 measurements was considered as the MPV change (MPV). The end point of the study was total ...

Predictors of No-Reflow Phenomenon in Young Patients With Acute ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction Undergoing Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention
In conclusion, female gender, pain to balloon time, high TIMI thrombus grade, tirofiban, MPV, and PLR were independent predictors of no-reflow in young patients with STEMI after pPCI. (Source: Angiology)

Early Vascular Aging in Normotensive Patients With Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: Comparison With Young Patients Having Hypertension
Connective tissue diseases, like systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), are associated with early and accelerated atherosclerosis. Recently, the concept of "early vascular aging" (EVA) has been more widely accepted. Aortic stiffness is one of the important markers of EVA. We evaluated EVA and subclinical atherosclerosis, by measuring aortic pulse wave velocity (aPWV) and carotid intima–media thickness (cIMT), in 50 normotensive patients with SLE (mean age: 39 ± 12 years). We compared these participants with 50 age- and sex-matched patients with essential hypertension (EH) and 20 healthy controls. Each participant...

Relationship Between Pain and CEAP C Categories of Chronic Venous Disease
In this study, we investigated whether the occurrence and intensity of leg pain are related to C class of the clinical, etiological, anatomical, and pathophysiological (CEAP) classification for chronic venous disease (CVeD). This cross-sectional study, conducted in Serbia, included 2841 patients: 2027 (71.3%) women and 814 (28.7%) men with CVeD diagnosed by general practitioners. For the first time, the Numeric Rating Scale of 0 to 5 units was used to assess the intensity of pain. For the analysis, univariate and multivariate logistic and linear regressions were applied. Pain in the legs was reported by 90.5% of the patien...

Classification of Aortic Stenosis by Flow and Gradient Patterns Provides Insights into the Pathophysiology of Disease
Different patterns of flow and valve gradients can lead to diagnostic uncertainty about the severity of aortic stenosis (AS). Consecutive patients with severe AS (valve area <1 cm2) underwent echocardiography and computed tomography. Patients were classified into 4 groups (high-gradient/normal flow [HGNF], high-gradient/low flow [HGLF], low-gradient/normal flow [LGNF], and low-gradient/low flow [LGLF]). Low flow was defined as stroke volume index <35 mL/m2 and low gradient as a mean aortic gradient <40 mm Hg. Aortic valve calcification (AVC) was calculated using the Agatston score. Of 181 patients, 56, 30, 46, and...

Long-Term Outcomes and Causes of Death in Patients With Renovascular Disease Undergoing Renal Artery Stenting
Renovascular disease (RVD) can lead to hypertension and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Patients with advanced peripheral arterial disease (PAD) have a 5-year mortality of ~30%. Rate and causes of death in patients with significant RVD, who share similar risk factors with patients having PAD, are not well defined. We assessed consecutive patients with RVD who underwent renal artery stenting at our institution over 6 years. Specific causes of death were ascertained, and the probability of survival was estimated. Cox models were fit to identify predictors of outcomes. We identified 281 patients with RVD who underwent renal ste...

Sex Differences in Patients With Acute Decompensated Heart Failure: Insights From the Heart Function Assessment Registry Trial in Saudi Arabia
We assessed sex-specific differences in clinical features and outcomes of patients with acute heart failure (AHF). The Heart function Assessment Registry Trial in Saudi Arabia (HEARTS), a prospective registry, enrolled 2609 patients with AHF (34.2% women) between 2009 and 2010. Women were older and more likely to have risk factors for atherosclerosis, history of heart failure (HF), and rheumatic heart and valve disease. Ischemic heart disease was the prime cause for HF in men and women but more so in men (P < .001). Women had higher rates of hypertensive heart disease and primary valve disease (P < .001, for both com...

Cilostazol Enhances Mobilization of Circulating Endothelial Progenitor Cells and Improves Endothelium-Dependent Function in Patients at High Risk of Cardiovascular Disease
This is the first study to investigate the vasculoangiogenic effects of cilostazol on endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) and flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) in patients at high risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). This double-blind, placebo-controlled study included 71 patients (37 received 200 mg/d cilostazol and 34 received placebo for 12 weeks). Use of cilostazol, but not placebo, significantly increased circulating EPC (kinase insert domain receptor+CD34+) counts (percentage changes: 149.0% [67.9%-497.8%] vs 71.9% [–31.8% to 236.5%], P = .024) and improved triglyceride and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol le...

Clinically Relevant Cardiovascular Findings Detected on Staging Computed Tomography in Patients with Several Malignancies
We evaluated the frequency and subtypes of clinically relevant cardiovascular (CV) findings identified on staging computed tomography (CT) in a large sample. Patients (n = 5026) with different malignant diseases were staged by CT. Clinically relevant CV findings (CRCFs) were included into the study. The CRCFs were defined as cardiac aneurysm, cardiac thrombus, venous thrombosis, arterial thrombosis, arterial dissection, pulmonary thromboembolism, arterial dissection, and dislocation of venous ports/central venous catheters. The CRCFs were identified in 342 patients (6.8% of all patients). Overall, 491 CRCFs were identified...

Predictors of Symptom Development in Intermediate Carotid Artery Stenosis: Mean Platelet Volume and Platelet Distribution Width
In this study, we investigated the relation of MPV and PDW with the risk of stroke in patients with intermediate (50%-70%) carotid artery stenosis. A total of 254 patients (115 symptomatic and 139 asymptomatic) with intermediate carotid artery stenosis were enrolled in this study. Symptomatic and asymptomatic patients were compared in regard to MPV and PDW. Mean platelet volume was significantly greater in the symptomatic group compared with the asymptomatic group (11.1 and 9.4 fL, respectively; P < .001). Platelet distribution width was significantly greater in the symptomatic group compared with the asymptomatic group...

Efficacy of Drug-Eluting Balloons for Patients With In-Stent Restenosis: A Meta-Analysis of 8 Randomized Controlled Trials
The optimal treatment for in-stent restenosis (ISR) of both bare-metal stent (BMS) and drug-eluting stent (DES) is currently unclear. The aim of this meta-analysis was to assess the role of drug-eluting balloon (DEB) as an optional treatment for ISR. We searched PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, BIOS, and Web of Science from 2005 to July 2014. Eight studies, enrolling 1413 patients were included. Main end points were late lumen loss (LLL), binary in-segment restenosis (BR), major adverse cardiac events (MACEs), target lesion revascularization (TLR), death, myocardial infarction (MI), and stent thrombosis (ST). When compared to plai...
