Assessing Cultural Awareness of Practicing Cardiac Sonographers
Cultural awareness is an emerging issue in the field of sonography. A cross-sectional study of cultural awareness was conducted in the northeastern United States through a professional echocardiography society. Of the 101 sonographer members, 67 (66%) participated in the survey, which addressed the following questions: What is the level of cultural awareness of the cardiac sonography membership of a suburban northeastern United States professional echocardiography society, and how does this relate to the number of years that the respective sonographers have been practicing in the field of echocardiography? Results of the s...

Methods of Determining the Size of the Adult Liver Using 2D Ultrasound: A Systematic Review of Articles Reporting Liver Measurement Techniques
Sonography is an effective, noninvasive, safe, and inexpensive technique for measurement of the liver. Measurements of the liver using 2D ultrasound aid in diagnosing and tracking liver disease and in surgical planning. Multiple studies have developed techniques to measure the adult liver using 2D ultrasound. The aim of this systematic literature review was to determine whether a correctly developed, reliable, and reproducible technique for measuring the liver using 2D ultrasound has been reported. Analysis of studies meeting the inclusion criteria showed that none of these studies has been rigorously undertaken in terms o...

Role of Serum TNF{alpha} Level in Atherosclerosis in Egyptian Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Patients
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune rheumatic disease that principally affects women in their childbearing years. Many cytokines have been implicated in regulating disease activity and the involvement of different organs in patients with SLE. The study was conducted to determine serum tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) levels in SLE patients and its relation to clinically active disease and to assess the possible role of serum TNFα level in atherosclerosis. Thirty Egyptian female patients with SLE and 15 matched healthy control subjects had serum TNFα levels measured. In addition, the rela...

Practical Utility of Color Doppler Sonography in the Evaluation of Endometrial Pathology
The sonographic findings and corresponding pathology reports of 83 premenopausal and 55 postmenopausal women were retrospectively reviewed to evaluate the significance of color Doppler imaging in the evaluation of the endometrium. Premenopausal women had flow noted in the single malignancy case and in 16 of 21 (76%) polyps, with 7 polyps (33%) presenting as a vascular pedicle. In postmenopausal women, flow was seen in 3 of 5 (60%) malignancies and 5 of 9 (56%) polyps, with 2 polyps (22%) presenting as a vascular pedicle. Postmenopausal women with thin endometria had flow in 1 of 2 (50%) polyps, while those with thicker end...

Against the Odds: Ectopic Abdominal Pregnancy
We present a case study in which the abdominal pregnancy was detected in the second trimester by sonography and confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging, both of which are considered essential diagnostic tools to provide optimal outcome for maternal and fetal well-being. Sonographic Discovery of Leriche Syndrome and the Development of Collaterals
Leriche syndrome, also referred to as aortoiliac occlusive disease, is complete occlusion of the infrarenal aorta and bilateral common iliac arteries. The development of collateral pathways allows reconstitution of arterial blood flow to the lower extremities, preventing limb ischemia. Patients typically present with a triad of symptoms, which include intermittent claudication of the buttocks and thighs, decreased or absent femoral pulses, and impotence in men. Sonography may play a significant role in diagnosing Leriche syndrome, particularly in cases with contraindications to other more invasive tests. Knowledge of the p...

Sonographic and Magnetic Resonance Imaging Characteristics Associated With Splenogonadal Fusion
Splenogonadal fusion (SGF) is a rare malformation that involves immature splenic tissue connecting and adhering to gonadal tissue during embryologic development. SGF is typically diagnosed during surgery or autopsy. This case study reports a case of discontinuous SGF found on sonography with correlative magnetic resonance imaging. Pseudo-Pelvic Mass: An Unusual Consequence of a Failed Prosthetic Hip Joint
Joint replacement is becoming a more common surgical procedure, and it may have unusual or unexpected postoperative complications. This case report discusses the evaluation of a large pelvic mass first noted on physical examination and ultimately diagnosed by sonography and computed tomography as a chronic hematoma resulting from a failed total left hip arthroplasty. A Rare Case of Papillary Bladder Neoplasm Detected by Sonography in a Young Male: A Case Report
We present a case of a papillary urothelial neoplasm in a 19-year-old man with no significant risk factors, initially detected by sonography and later confirmed with computed tomographic urography and cystoscopy. The tumor was quickly resected and mitomycin C instilled in the bladder prophylactically. This is an atypical situation in a patient with none of the common risk factors. Sonographic Confirmation of Bilateral Invasive Ductal Carcinoma Undetected on Mammogram
Invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast is cancer that originates in the ducts and subsequently invades the fatty tissue of the breast outside the duct. It is the most common form of breast cancer, representing 80% of all breast cancers. Invasive ductal carcinoma has the potential to metastasize via the bloodstream and lymph nodes, making early diagnosis critical. In the case presented, a rare instance of bilateral primary invasive ductal carcinoma is discussed: It was identified by magnetic resonance imaging, and it was visualized, confirmed, and located by sonography; yet, it was undetected by mammography. Large Hepatocellular Carcinoma in an Essentially Asymptomatic Young Woman
This article presents a case of a large hepatocellular carcinoma in an essentially asymptomatic young woman in good health. She had no history of any of the traditional risk factors of hepatitis, alcoholism, hepatic fibrosis/cirrhosis, hemochromatosis, or diabetes. Sonographic diagnosis was confirmed by computed tomography–guided biopsy. (Source: Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography)

Sonographic Evaluation of the Carotid Intima-media Complex Thickness in Nigerian Chronic Kidney Disease Patients
This study compares CIMT measurements in 75 patients with chronic kidney disease to a matched cohort of 75 subjects with normal kidney function. In plaque-free arterial segments, the CIMT was measured manually in the longitudinal plane from the far walls of a segment of the common carotid artery 3 cm in length adjacent to the carotid bifurcation. Patients with CKD had a significantly higher mean CIMT compared to those with normal renal function (0.86 ± 0.42 mm vs 0.69 ± 0.21 mm; P < .01). Mean CIMT values did not differ significantly between patients with different stages of CKD (stage 3: 0.88 ± 0.1...
