Placental Mesenchymal Dysplasia (PMD) in Association With Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome Identified by First Trimester Sonography
In this report, a case of PMD later confirmed as Beckwith-Wiedemann is presented, which was identified by sonography in the first trimester. When faced with a first trimester finding of an enlarged cystic placenta, it is suggested that BWS be considered as a possible diagnosis and accordingly, genetic testing with methylation studies offered to the parents. Postsurgical Follow-up for a Repaired Nutcracker Syndrome: A Case Study
Nutcracker syndrome is a venous entrapment phenomenon characterized by the impingement of the left renal vein between the superior mesenteric artery and abdominal aorta. Treatment, if necessary, consists of surgical intervention. In the case presented, a young female presented at an outpatient vascular surgical center for surveillance of a surgically repaired nutcracker syndrome. A renal sonogram was performed to evaluate patency and hemodynamics of the left renal vein. Color and spectral Doppler were used to evaluate the left renal vein as well as the left kidney to document appropriate renal perfusion. (Source: Journal o...

Small Bowel Obstruction Due to MALT Lymphoma: Sonographic Appearance and CT Correlation
Extranodal marginal zone lymphomas comprise approximately 5% of all non-Hodgkin lymphomas. These tumors may arise in any epithelial tissue, including the bowel lining. A report is presented of a patient who presented to the emergency department with epigastric abdominal pain and vomiting. An abdominal sonogram showed a 3.1 cm dilated loop of small bowel near midline just above the umbilicus as well as an abrupt transition zone to normal bowel suggestive of small bowel obstruction, confirmed by subsequent computed tomography. Small bowel resection found an intraluminal tumor, and biopsy showed extranodal marginal zone lymph...

Sonographic Assessment of Cystic Hepatic Lesions in Sudanese
This study of 183 patients was done to identify and evaluate focal hepatic cystic lesions in Sudanese adults using ultrasonography (US) and to determine the diagnostic role of ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (FNA). Most cystic lesions identified were solitary lesions (74.3%). The most common site for lesions was the right lobe of the liver (66.1%). Simple hepatic cysts were seen in 20.2% of patients; the most common type of lesion was hepatic abscess (41.5%). Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease accounted for only 2.2% of lesions. There was a statistical association between focal hepatic cystic lesions and...

Bioeffects Reference Tool May Not Improve Sonographers' Monitoring of Mechanical and Thermal Indices in Obstetric Sonography Examinations
This research examines whether using a reference tool alters the monitoring of the mechanical index (MI) and thermal index (TI) during obstetric (OB) sonograms. A presurvey regarding users’ behavior patterns of monitoring MI/TI indices was emailed to sonographers who were registered in a clinical database affiliated with an accredited sonography program. The presurvey included a reference tool which respondents were asked to print and use when performing OB sonograms. A postsurvey was sent to the same respondents to determine if behavior patterns regarding MI/TI monitoring improved after using the reference tool. The...

Radiologic and Sonography Professionals' Ergonomics: An Occupational Therapy Intervention for Preventing Work Injuries
There is a prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSDs) associated with the work of radiologic professionals, especially those doing sonographic examinations. This may be due to the fact that their daily work tasks expose them to the physical risk factors associated with WRMSDs. The purpose of this study was to examine whether radiologic professionals’ knowledge and work practices changed after receiving an educational multimedia tutorial on ergonomics. After multimedia training on ergonomics and safe body mechanics designed by occupational therapy providers, participants reported that their awarenes...

Weight-Biased Health Professionals and the Effects on Overweight Patients
A significant number of Americans are obese. Weight bias and negative attitudes have been documented among medical professionals, and these may cause obese patients to avoid seeking health care, leading to undiagnosed pathology. Some physicians lack adequate resources and patient counseling skills when addressing patient weight management. This may lead to continued weight problems and associated complications for the patient. Many physicians do not address patient obesity with urgency and determination, even though most physicians consider obesity a widespread, problematic disease. The purpose of this literature review is...

The Sonographic Reasoning Method
A vital component of clinical sonography is the approach the sonographer uses to analyze both the patient’s clinical history and the sonographic findings of each examination. Although every study is different, the sonographer is obligated to obtain the optimal information from both clinical history assessment and sonographic imaging in order for the interpreting physician to make an accurate diagnosis. One of the essential roles of sonography education is to provide instruction that allows students to gradually develop into clinically aware and proficient sonographers who are consistently capable of exploiting critic...

Incidental Finding of Renal Cell Carcinoma: Detected by a Thrombus in the Inferior Vena Cava
Renal cell carcinoma, the most common renal neoplasm, often goes undetected since it typically remains asymptomatic. In some cases, renal cell carcinoma invades the renal vein and infiltrates the inferior vena cava. Understanding of this natural history will enable sonographers to evaluate a patient further when a thrombus in the inferior vena cava or renal vein is visualized. This case report presents a renal cell carcinoma that was incidentally detected secondary to a thrombosed inferior vena cava and validates the importance of evaluating the kidneys in such cases.
