Ovarian Torsion With Persistent Parenchymal Blood Flow
Ovarian torsion is the complete or partial rotation of the ovary upon its vascular pedicle with subsequent vascular compromise; it is one of a few gynecologic surgical emergencies requiring prompt diagnosis and treatment. The commonly accepted diagnostic sonographic finding in ovarian torsion is the absence of ovarian parenchymal blood flow using color or power Doppler imaging. However, since not all cases of ovarian torsion cause complete vascular obstruction, the presence of ovarian blood flow cannot eliminate this diagnosis in symptomatic patients with other positive sonographic findings. The case presented demonstrates...

Cyst of Canal of Nuck
A cyst of the canal of Nuck is a rare condition that occurs when the processus vaginalis fails to obliterate during embryologic development. When a nonreducible groin mass is seen in women and girls, a cyst of the canal of Nuck should be considered in the differential diagnosis. Sonography has shown to be accurate and reliable at diagnosing these cysts and should be the primary imaging modality used to image groin masses. (Source: Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography)

Sonographic Detection of Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser Syndrome
Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome is a disorder affecting the female reproductive system, which can result in an absent uterus and vagina or a partially absent vagina with a normal uterus. While this female reproductive disorder can be difficult to diagnose, transabdominal sonography is often the initial imaging modality used to evaluate the female pelvis in this patient population as many females are not diagnosed with the disorder until primary amenorrhea is noted around puberty. This case study presents a young female who is diagnosed with an absent uterus and vagina but normal ovaries and discusses the role ...

Sonographic Prenatal Diagnosis of Turner Syndrome
Turner syndrome is the most common sex chromosome abnormality in female fetuses, in which all or part of one of the X chromosomes is absent or has some other abnormality. The syndrome has a number of characteristic sonographic findings such as diffuse fetal edema, cystic hygroma with septations, renal and cardiac anomalies, increased nuchal translucency, and growth retardation. A case is presented of Turner syndrome diagnosed by cytogenic testing after a number of anatomic anomalies, including diffuse edema, cystic hygroma and growth retardation, were found by sonography. Sonographic Diagnosis of Antley-Bixler PORD-Type Syndrome
We present a case of PORD with the ABS phenotype diagnosed by sonography in utero at an early gestation (13–16 weeks), which included mutations in the POR gene. Sonographers, sonologists, and perinatologists aware of the diversity of this rare condition will be well prepared to raise the suspicion of Antley-Bixler PORD-type syndrome. Sonographic Visualization of Fecal Loading in Adults: Comparison With Computed Tomography
The aim of this study was to compare ultrasonographic assessment of fecal loading in adults with that of computed tomography. Ultrasonography (US) was performed on 43 adult patients immediately after abdominal computed tomography images had identified fecal loading in their colons. In 18 of 43 patients (haustrations-visualized cases), fecal loading was detected as crescent-shaped acoustic shadows associated with haustrations behind the strong echoes off the colon wall. In the remaining 25 patients (haustrations-not-visualized cases), fecal loading was detected as attenuating echoes with multiple high echoic spots behind we...

The Effect of Bedside Ultrasound on Diagnosis and Management of Patients Presenting to a Sports Medicine Clinic With Undifferentiated Shoulder Pain
The objective of this study was to determine if point-of-care sonography of the shoulder would change diagnosis or management in patients presenting to a sports medicine clinic with shoulder pain. We performed an observational, nonrandomized, nonblinded study of provider behavior when evaluating patients presenting to a sports medicine clinic with shoulder pain. The provider completed a questionnaire regarding the most likely diagnosis and management plan after he or she had performed a physical examination and radiograph(s). Following the physical examination and radiograph(s), a bedside ultrasonographic examination (BUS)...

Exploring the Use of Sonographic Evaluation of the Glenohumeral Labrum: A Preclinical Replication
This study was done to replicate sonographic evaluation of the glenoid labrum in a preclinical model and use the axillary scanning approach to specifically assess the integrity of the anterior inferior labrum. Using sonographic guidance, minimal amounts of differently colored dyes were injected into regions of the glenoid labrum. This replication was able to image only the posterior superior, posterior inferior, and anterior inferior aspects of the GH labrum. Bankart lesions were identified in two shoulders, confirmed on dissection. The presence of dyes in the target areas within and around the labrum was visually confirme...

Uterine Artery Doppler of the Gravid Uterus as a Predictor Identifying At-Risk Pregnancies: A Meta-Analysis
This article summarizes the effectiveness of each methodology, with a primary focus on an at-risk population, since studies of low-risk populations have not demonstrated significant sensitivity for prediction of complications such as pre-eclampsia, placental abruptia, or fetal demise. Role of B-color and Resolution Sonography Presets for the Diagnosis of Lower Extremity Deep Vein Thrombosis
Sonography is an accurate and commonly used method of determining the presence, location, and acuity of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). A retrospective data analysis of 284 venous examinations was performed to determine if imaging presets increase the ability to detect an acute DVT. There were no significant differences between the outcomes of three modalities of sonographic imaging. If a patient had a prior DVT, the likelihood of observing another DVT using only two-dimensional imaging, resolution presets, or the B-color option was approximately nine times greater than for a patient who did not have a prior DVT. Sex, age, bod...

Ultrasonographic Surveillance of Abdominal Aortic Endovascular Aneurysm Stent Graft Repair in a Dedicated Vascular Laboratory
Surveillance following abdominal aortic endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) is imperative to confirm graft patency, analyze residual sac size (RSS), and evaluate for complications. This retrospective study evaluated ultrasonographic (US) surveillance after EVAR compared to computed tomography (CT). US was done by 1 of 11 experienced registered technologists. US was ordered for surveillance more frequently than CT, with a ratio of 4:1. Compared to CT, US endoleak evaluations were 74% sensitive and 76% specific with a 63% positive predictive value and 84% negative predictive value. However, 11 CT scans were likely false nega...
