Objective Lower Extremity Arterial Plethysmographic Waveform Characteristics for Differentiating Significant Inflow Disease in Nondiabetic Patients
This study examines APW characteristics in the thigh to determine which features best identify flow-limiting (>50% diameter) INFLOW disease. Nondiabetic vascular laboratory patients with segmental APW analysis, systolic pressure measurements, and arteriography within 30 days of their noninvasive vascular ultrasound procedure were included for study. Thigh plethysmographic waveforms were evaluated for acceleration time (TIME) from onset of systole to peak systole, relative amplitude reduction (RAR) one-fifth of a second after peak systole, and waveform downslope curvature (CURV). Patients with nonsignificant INFLOW disea...

The Triple Test Markers Profile Among Fetuses and Children Diagnosed With Umbilical Vein Varix
Umbilical vein varix (UVV) is defined as a focal enlargement of the umbilical vein and represents approximately 4% of fetal umbilical cord malformations. The reported neonatal outcome of fetuses with UVV varies widely due to its rarity, hence the small sample sizes of the case series in the literature. Earlier studies reported high fetal mortality, but more recent reports have demonstrated no association between UVV and intrauterine fetal death. A recent study has described a possible association between UVV diagnosed prenatally and child developmental delay. The present study of fetuses with UVV was done to evaluate and c...

Skin Perfusion Pressure: A Case Study Demonstrating Microcirculatory Blood Flow
Skin perfusion pressure (SPP) is a noninvasive diagnostic test that quantitatively analyzes the local blood flow in an area of interest. SPP is measured using a laser Doppler sensor that is placed under an inflated/deflated blood pressure cuff and is able to detect red blood cell motion in the microcirculation as the cuff pressure passes through systole. The SPP results can be used in conjunction with physiological arterial testing to aid in the diagnosis of critical limb ischemia. The examination also can be a guide in determining the most advantageous level for amputation in patients with critical limb ischemia. SPP prov...

Prenatal Sonographic Detection of Skeletal Dysplasias: A Case of Multiple Pterygium Syndrome, or Escobar Syndrome
Skeletal dysplasias are a genetically heterogeneous group of disorders that can be diagnosed prenatally by sonography. Differentiating these disorders in the prenatal period can be difficult. However, differentiating known lethal disorders from nonlethal disorders can improve patient care and plan of action. This case study presents multiple pterygia, flexion contractures, and skeletal abnormalities, which are consistent with multiple pterygium syndrome, or Escobar syndrome. Determining the Validity and Reliability of Elastographic Analytics Using Rotator Cuff Muscles
The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility and reliability of using elastography and subsequent image analysis to evaluate two rotator cuff muscles. Elastography imaging was conducted on the infraspinatus muscles of four cadavers. Next, elastography imaging was conducted on the supraspinatus muscles of 10 human subjects. Image analysis was conducted retrospectively to determine the relative computed strain value. Pearson correlations and two-tailed t tests for equal variance were used to demonstrate an interclass correlation (ICC) for two researchers performing image analysis. A significance value of P <...

Evaluation of the Association between Compensated Hepatitis C Infectivity and Endothelial Dysfunction, Using Flow-Mediated Vasodilatation of the Brachial Artery
Conclusion: Our results show that hepatitis C positivity in compensated patients, in the absence of cardiovascular risk factors, does not appear to be independently associated with endothelial dysfunction when objectively analyzed by brachial artery flow-mediated vasodilatation. A Retrospective Analysis of Abdominal Competency Scores to Improve Clinical Education in a Sonography Program
Classroom examinations and a passing score on a sonography certification examination are means to assess a student’s retention of material presented during didactic education and further studying. Typically, however, clinical competencies are graded based on actual observation of scanning skills and the ability to identify specific organs and associated abnormalities. We are reporting an analysis of the data collected from students’ completed abdominal competency evaluations over the past four years to determine what organ was the easiest to learn to scan, what organ was the most difficult to learn to scan, and...

Intraoperative Sonography Opens New Doors for Patient Care
Intraoperative ultrasonography (IOUS) is rapidly changing as advancements in technology provide surgeons with more options for the treatment of their patients. Despite the introduction of intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT), advancements in IOUS technology and its low cost have kept this a viable modality. The improved image resolution that is available provides neurosurgeons, for example, with the information necessary to adequately resect cancer in the brain, including superficial and deep-set tumors, whether they are primary brain cancers or brain metastases. Strain sonography an...

Sonographic Diagnosis of Fetal Goiter
The presence of a goiter in the fetus is an indication of maternal thyroid dysfunction. It carries an increased morbidity and mortality for the fetus and into the neonatal period. Maternal thyroid disease must be monitored closely and medications adjusted throughout pregnancy to prevent adverse outcomes. In females with poorly controlled thyroid disease, sonography is useful in the evaluation of the fetus at risk for goiter. (Source: Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography)

Detection of Ureteral Stones With Transvaginal Sonography
Transabdominal sonography has proved to be an efficacious imaging technology to diagnose urolithiaisis. However, the location of the calculus may cause a sonographic examination to be limited. Since the majority of ureteral stones are located in the distal ureter, calculi may not always be visualized transabdominally, especially if the bladder is not full. This case study demonstrates the use of transvaginal sonography in the diagnosis of distal ureterolithiasis and discusses the optimal visualization of a ureteral stone in a female patient using transvaginal sonography. The case demonstrates the importance of this imaging...

Doppler Tissue Imaging Is More Sensitive Than Other Echocardiographic Markers in Identifying Abnormal Relaxation in Subclinical Hypertensive Disease and Normal Ejection Fraction
This report describes the use of echocardiographic measurements for the assessment of left ventricular diastolic function in two young patients with newly diagnosed hypertension. Measurements for the assessment of left ventricular relaxation and filling pressures included mitral inflow, Doppler tissue imaging (DTI), color M-mode propagation velocity slope, and the isovolumic relaxation time. The mitral inflow, propagation velocity, and isovolumic relaxation time measurements were all within normal limits; however, DTI measurements of the E' velocity at the septal and lateral annulus were significantly reduced in both patie...
