Sonographic Appearance of Congenital Pulmonary Airway Malformations
Congenital pulmonary airway malformation, also known as congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation, is the most common congenital lung malformation of the lower respiratory tract. Congenital pulmonary airway malformation lesions fall into five classifications based on respiratory tract origin and cystic characteristics. Sonographic appearance varies from echolucent cysts to an echogenic, solid-appearing mass within the lungs. Fetal mediastinal shift, pulmonary hypoplasia, and hydrops can occur, depending on the size of the lesion. A case is presented with sonography to characterize the lesion. Sonographic Diagnosis of Thoracic Ectopia Cordis With Acrania
Ectopia cordis is a rare congenital anomaly in which the heart is displaced outside of the thoracic cavity. This case report describes the in utero diagnosis of thoracic ectopia cordis in conjunction with fetal acrania, both of which were thought to result from an amniotic band located near the fetal head. Sonographic Detection of Unilateral Retinoblastoma
Retinoblastoma is a cancer that affects the eye, and if untreated, it can spread to other parts of the body. Retinoblastoma is the most common pediatric eye cancer and accounts for 3% of all childhood cancers. It can be hereditary or sporadic (nonhereditary). This case study presents a unilateral retinoblastoma of the right eye in a pediatric patient. A diagnosis of retinoblastoma was made by correlating sonography, magnetic resonance imaging, and ophthalmology. Treatment for retinoblastoma depends on the severity of the cancer but can include radiation, chemotherapy, focal laser therapy, and/or surgery. This particular ca...

Variation in Galactocele Location and Sonographic Appearance
A galactocele is a cyst that forms from the obstruction of a lactiferous duct within the breast. These cysts typically form when a woman is pregnant or lactating and are usually of periareolar location. Mammography and sonography are common imaging modalities used to detect these cysts. This case study presents the sonographic detection of a galactocele with an abnormal location and appearnace in the left axilla. (Source: Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography)

Sonographic Detection of a Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor of the Stomach
Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) arise from mesenchymal tissue and represent the majority of gastric tumors. Diagnostic workup of GISTs is usually done through immunohistochemistry and imaging, typically not including sonography. A case is presented of a GIST that was initially identified sonographically with an unknown primary site. Sonography detected and characterized the mass, followed by the use of computed tomography to obtain additional information that led to the diagnosis. The use of both diagnostic imaging modalities allowed for accurate diagnosis and helped to determine the next step in proper treatment o...

Intrauterine Device Perforation
Intrauterine devices (IUDs) have had a controversial history but are regarded as a safe, effective form of contraception for all women. IUDs have many benefits, but at the same time, risks and complications may occur in a small percentage of women. The case study first presents a patient with an IUD that perforated the uterus and then offers a discussion of the risks and benefits of IUD contraception. Review of Patient Satisfaction Research to Improve Patient Surveys in Medical Imaging Departments
Patient satisfaction is important to health care facilities because a satisfied customer tends to return for additional services. Identifying the characteristics that increase patient satisfaction can help facilities improve their process. Few studies have directly evaluated imaging departments, but the literature from other health care specialties can be applied when the environment is similar. Having a pleasant waiting experience has shown to have a positive impact on patients’ overall satisfaction and perceived quality of care. Factors that have been linked to improved patient satisfaction include decreased wait t...

Screening for Congenital Heart Disease: Sonographic Features and Techniques for Prenatal Detection
Compared with the assessment of most fetal anatomic structures, the assessment of the fetal heart during routine obstetric screening represents a diagnostic challenge for sonographers and interpreting physicians. This is due to a number of factors: the structural complexity of the heart, the rate at which it moves, the position of the fetus relative to the transducer, and variations in assessment protocols used by sonographers and physicians. The fetal heart is a relatively small and complex structure, as seen in an early second-trimester sonogram. In some forms of congenital heart disease, the abnormality may be detectabl...

Serendipitous Diagnosis of a Ganglioneuroma in a Diagnostic Medical Sonography Educational Setting
This report describes an unanticipated finding in an asymptomatic volunteer scanned in a sonography education program that led to the diagnosis of a rare, benign tumor consistent with a ganglioneuroma. The importance of maintaining a proper protocol for addressing incidental pathological findings for volunteers in the educational setting is emphasized. Brachiocephalic Artery Disease Progression Resulting in Complex Steal Phenomena
Severe brachiocephalic artery stenoses are relatively rare obstructions of the extracranial arteries and can cause significant changes to hemodynamics and spectral Doppler waveform patterns, complicating diagnosis. This case study presents disease progression from stenosis to occlusion and resulting complex steal phenomena extending to the contralateral upper extremity, which has not been widely reported. The sonographic findings of disease progression and collateral pathways were confirmed by magnetic resonance angiography and contrast-enhanced computed tomography. Diagnosis of Iatrogenic Injury of the Endometrium Using Duplex Sonography
Iatrogenic endometrial arterial injury is a rare and life-threatening condition that can occur after dilation and curettage (D&C) procedures. A case is presented that describes the sonographic features of an iatrogenic endometrial arterial injury status post-D&C. The patient presented to the emergency department on several occasions for post-D&C complaints. The patient was imaged with transabdominal and transvaginal grayscale and Doppler (color and spectral) sonography on all visits. Other diagnostic testing, such as beta human chorionic gonadotropin (B-hCG) levels, also was performed. The report dictated by th...
