Pediatric Sonography Curriculum: A Matter of Patient Safety
Diagnostic medical sonography is a leading and favored imaging technique in pediatrics. However, diagnostic medical sonography education does not include a standardized specific curriculum in general pediatric sonography. This mixed-methods study aims to (1) measure pediatric sonographers’ self-assessed knowledge, skill, and competence immediately after graduation or cross-training from radiologic technology as compared with their current levels; (2) gain insights from these sonographers of potential topics/techniques necessary to improve students’ general pediatric sonography preparation; and (3) determine the...

Hypervascular Soft Tissue Tumor of the Skull Suspicious for Hemangiopericytoma: A Case Study
Hemangiopericytoma (HPC) is a rare mesenchymal tumor that is predominantly found in the pelvis, retroperitoneum, and lower extremities, occasionally occurring in the larynx, spleen, bones of the thorax, or the meninges. A case is presented of a hypervascular soft tissue mass of the skull suggesting a diagnosis of hemangiopericytoma. Imaging modalities including computed tomography and sonography were used to help characterize this soft tissue lesion of the skull to aid in the proper course of diagnosis and treatment. The characteristics of hemangiopericytoma are described, and note is made that because of the vascular natu...

Skene's Gland Abscess: Detection With Transperineal Sonography
Skene’s glands are glands situated in the caudal two-thirds of the urethra. Infection of the gland by bacteria leads to inflammatory obstruction of the paraurethral ducts, causing the formation of a cyst or abscess. Patients typically present with dysuria, dyspareunia, vaginal discharge, and pain. On physical examination, a palpable mass is present and purulent material can be expressed from the ductal orifice. Clinical assessment of women with paraurethral gland symptoms is difficult, necessitating further evaluation with imaging. Recent advances in sonographic and magnetic resonance imaging have dramatically improv...

Bakri Balloon Displacement in the Uterus: Sonographic Demonstration
Bakri balloons are minimally invasive devices placed in the uterus and inflated with saline to apply extrinsic pressure to stop postpartum hemorrhage. Sonography is an ideal imaging modality to confirm position of a Bakri balloon because it is quick and precise in locating the device, does not use ionizing radiation, and is inexpensive. This case report describes the sonographic documentation and management of a malpositioned Bakri balloon. (Source: Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography)

Intraparenchymal Hemorrhage and Fungemia in a Preterm Neonate
Intraparenchymal hemorrhage, also known as grade IV hemorrhage, is a severe and uncommon type of intracranial hemorrhage. Intraparenchymal hemorrhage is associated with poor clinical outcomes; therefore, recognition and differentiation of the correct type of intracranial hemorrhage is important for the treatment of the patient. This case report demonstrates the use of real-time sonographic imaging in a preterm neonate as an effective method of diagnosing intraparenchymal hemorrhage and demonstrates a possible presence of fungemia. Takotsubo: A Case Study of Broken Heart Syndrome
Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (often referred to as broken heart syndrome) typically presents as apical ballooning, chest pain, shortness of breath, abnormal cardiac enzymes, and electrocardiogram changes. Although takotsubo cardiomyopathy mimics symptoms of an acute coronary event, in most cases it is a reversible cardiomyopathy with no long-term effects. Echocardiography is the noninvasive test of choice for initial presentation and follow-up of this syndrome. A case of takotsubo cardiomyopathy is presented and its clinical signs, echocardiographic features, and management discussed. (Source: Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography)

Unsuspected Traumatic Pseudoaneurysm of the Internal Carotid Artery
Peripheral arterial aneurysms may be true aneurysms, a dilation of the lumen lined by the remnants of the stretched arterial wall, or a false aneurysm (pseudoaneurysm), a penetration of the luminal wall with contained flow external to the vessel. Pseudoaneurysms are typically a result of blunt or penetrating arterial trauma, which includes a variety of iatrogenic injuries. This case report describes a traumatic psuedoaneurysm of the left internal carotid artery that occurred after a fall resulting in hyperextension of the neck. The psuedoaneurysm was undetected for three months until a sonographic examination for persisten...

Sonographic Evaluation of Budd-Chiari Syndrome With Intracaval Stent
Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) with an intracaval stent is a rare presentation. In most Western patients with BCS, it is predominantly the hepatic veins that are involved, not the inferior vena cava (IVC). In the case presented, the patient had antiphospholipid syndrome with BCS that involved the IVC and required an intracaval stent. Presented with the case study are scanning techniques for BCS and the IVC to help sonographers evaluate the normal and abnormal anatomy and hemodynamics of this system. Sonographic Evaluation and Diagnosis of Peritoneal Mesothelioma Resulting in Massive Intra-abdominal Ascites
Mesothelioma is most commonly thought of as a pathology of the lungs; however, in rare cases it may develop in other areas of the body. Vague symptoms and lack of visible tumors in the beginning stages of the disease can make this pathology difficult to diagnose when manifesting in locations other than the lungs. This case study presents a rare occurrence of peritoneal mesothelioma. Multiple imaging modalities typically play a role in the diagnosis of this pathology, including sonography and computed tomography. The case report highlights the diagnostic and therapeutic values sonography can offer for such pathology. (Sourc...

Diagnostic Imaging of Appendicitis With Supplementation by Transabdominal and Transvaginal Sonography
Acute appendicitis is a condition that can affect any member of the population. Without timely treatment there is a high likelihood of rupture leading to peritonitis, and early diagnosis is imperative to obtaining treatment. Sonography can be used without fear of radiation exposure to the patient and with relatively little discomfort, ideal for pediatric patients. It can also be used with little patient preparation, with the possibility of a more rapid diagnosis than other imaging modalities. For patients presenting with atypical symptoms, sonography may be used to increase diagnostic accuracy, which will lead to a drop in...
