Primary Venous Aneurysm of the Basilic Vein at the Distal Forearm
Venous aneurysm (VA) is an uncommon solitary focal dilation of a vein. Primary superficial VA, which may be associated with congenital weakness of the vein wall, is rare. In this case study, an extremely rare primary superficial VA from the basilic vein in the distal forearm is reported. The patient presented with a painless soft mass in the ulnar aspect of the distal forearm without any history of trauma, inflammation, or systematic disease. The mass was prominent with the arm in dependence and diminished with the arm elevated. Ultrasound scanning revealed a saccular dilation of the vein coursed along the path of the basi...

Sonographic Prenatal Diagnosis of a Vascular Ring in an In Vitro Fertilization Fetus
The use of assisted reproductive technology, specifically in vitro fertilization, has been shown to increase the risk for the fetus having a congenital malformation as compared with a fetus conceived naturally. Congenital malformations can be effectively diagnosed prenatally through the use of sonography and fetal echocardiography. This case study presents the sonographic prenatal detection of a vascular ring in the heart of a fetus conceived through in vitro fertilization. A right aortic arch with a left ductus arteriosus was identified in the three-vessel view during a detailed fetal echocardiogram. The use of prenatal s...

Sonographic Detection of Skeletal Dysplasia: A Case of Osteogenesis Imperfecta
A case of skeletal dysplasia was sonographically evaluated in the fetus of a 21-year-old patient. The diagnosis of osteogenesis imperfecta type II was suggested during a routine morphological examination at 17 weeks’ gestation, based on visualization of rhizomelia, bowed long bones, and decreased thoracic cavity size. Sonographically, this dysplasia was well visualized and contributed to a final diagnosis, highlighting the diagnostic value of prenatal sonography. The use of routine sonographic examinations continues to prove crucial for early detection of fetal abnormalities such as skeletal dysplasias. (Source: Jour...

The Value of Sonography in the Assessment of Skin Cancers and Their Metastases
Skin cancer has become more prevalent in recent years, and finding ways to assess and characterize it prior to excision is important. Sonography can be an integral part of the preoperative and follow-up assessment of melanoma, metastatic lymph nodes, and nonmelanoma skin cancers. A review of the literature is reported, indicating that sonography appears to be effective at showing lesion thickness, defining lesion borders, and helping to identify whether lymph nodes are metastatic; however, it cannot differentiate among the types of skin cancer. Based on these findings, best practice scanning techniques are outlined for son...

Emphysematous Cholecystitis: A Deadly Twist to a Common Disease
Emphysematous cholecystitis (EC) is a rare but deadly variant of acute cholecystitis noted by the presence of gas in the gallbladder lumen or wall. This gas, emitted by bacteria, is thought to result from gallbladder ischemia caused by vascular compromise with subsequent bacterial invasion. The two most common bacteria responsible for EC are Clostridia perfringens and Escherichia coli. Symptoms of EC are similar, although often less overt, compared to those of acute cholecystitis (AC). Sonography and radiography are common methods of diagnosing EC, but computed tomography (CT) carries the highest diagnostic accuracy rate. ...

Sonographic Detection of Cervical Carcinoma With Metastases
Cervical cancer is not considered to be a highly prevalent carcinoma, as there are more cases of pre-cancer detected than invasive cases. It is also on the decline due to the use of routine Papanicolaou (Pap) tests, and immunizations against Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) have also helped diminish the number of cases. A case is presented of a cervical mass with metastases into the bladder and hydronephrosis of the kidneys detected using computed tomography (CT) and further evaluated using sonography. These imaging modalities together were able to provide global visualization of the pathology, resulting in accurate diagnosis a...

Sonographic Detection of an Unknown Chromosomal Disorder in Utero
Obstetric sonography has a long-standing reputation assisting in the detection of chromosomal abnormalities in utero. Additional diagnostic testing can be performed to confirm a genetic anomaly, including noninvasive prenatal testing, nuchal translucency, and amniocentesis. Comprehensively studied chromosomal abnormalities include trisomies 21, 13, and 18 and monosomy X. Although chromosomal abnormalities cannot be treated, they can be managed and monitored by serial sonograms and genetic counseling prior to delivery, allowing for preparation for a special needs child. This case study presents a fetus with multiple anomali...

Perineural (Tarlov) Cyst Imitating Complex Adnexal Cyst: A Sonographic and Magnetic Resonance Imaging Correlation
This report documents a lesion now bearing his name, Tarlov cysts (TCs). They are defined as cerebrospinal fluid–filled saccular lesions located in the extradural space of the sacral spinal canal and are formed within the nerve root sheath at the dorsal root ganglion. The perineurium and neural tissue make up the cysts’ walls. Usually asymptomatic, a TC is mostly found on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the lumbar spine and sacrum. Occasionally, a TC mimics an adnexal cyst. (Source: Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography)

The Effectiveness of Sonography in the Detection of Diaphragmatic Paralysis: A Rare Respiratory Disorder
Unilateral or bilateral paralysis of the diaphragm is an acquired dysfunction caused by injury or trauma to the phrenic nerve. Patients will often experience symptoms of respiratory distress, and severe cases can be life-threatening. Though not widely used, sonography, specifically M-mode imaging, has proven to be convenient and effective in the detection of this condition. A case is presented describing the sonographic techniques used to evaluate this entity. (Source: Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography)

Diagnosis of Atypical Chest Pain Using Ultrasound
While the common organs assessed in chest pain are the heart, lungs, and inferior vena cava, one must also consider other diagnoses. Splenic rupture can be either traumatic or atraumatic, and splenomegaly can make this vulnerable organ even more susceptible to injury. A case is reported of a patient who presented to the emergency department with a complaint of left-sided chest pain; a focused assessment with sonography for trauma (FAST) examination showed significant intraperitoneal free fluid consistent with splenic injury. The role of bedside sonography in acquiring a rapid and accurate diagnosis is discussed. (Source: J...

The Value of Ultrasound-Guided Fine-Needle Aspiration Cytology by Cytopathologists in the Diagnosis of Major Salivary Gland Tumors
Because of the typical sonographic appearances of many salivary gland masses, as well as the normal appearance and anatomy of the glands, differentiation of salivary glands tumors based only on clinical and imaging criteria is difficult. We compared the utility, safety, specificity, and accuracy of ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration cytology (UG-FNAC) in the detection of nonpalpable tumors in the major salivary glands. A retrospective review was done of a 5-year experience of 102 consecutive patients undergoing UG-FNAC. Clinical opinion, FNA results, and final pathologic findings were examined. Histological evaluatio...
